Santander Sells 49% in Polish Unit to Erste for €6.8 Billion
Banco Santander SA agreed to sell 49% of its Polish unit to Erste Group Bank AG for about €6.8 billion ($7.7 billion), in one of the largest banking transactions in Europe in recent years. Erste also agreed to buy the 50% in the Polish asset manager TFI that's not already owned by the Polish unit from Santander for about €200 million, the two lenders said in separate statements on Monday.

Banco Santander: Q1 Earnings Snapshot

The financial holding company posted revenue of $32.68 billion in the period. Its revenue net of interest expense was $16.34 billion, which topped Street forecasts. _____

Santander's Net Income Beats Estimates
Banco Santander SA posted first-quarter profit that exceeded expectations, saying its fee income hit a record. Spain's biggest lender reported net income of €3.40 billion ($3.9 billion), it said in a statement on Wednesday. The Bloomberg-compiled analyst consensus had forecast €3.18 billion.

Spanish Banks Plan to Spread Windfall Tax Payment Over Full Year
Spanish banks including Banco Santander SA, BBVA SA and CaixaBank SA are looking to spread the annual payment of a windfall tax over four quarters rather than making a single upfront disbursement, according to people familiar with the matter. Doing so would mark a change of strategy from the previous years and would be a way to soften the impact of the tax on first-quarter earnings, according to the people, who asked not be named as the information isn't public. In 2023 and 2024, lenders recorded the full payment in the first quarter.
