BDA plan for Nov 1: 11-km arterial road off Mysuru & Magadi stretches

Bengaluru: The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is expected to open the 11-km major arterial road (MAR) connecting Mysuru Road and Magadi Road on Nov 1, Rajyotsava Day. This is expected to decongest the traffic in the city, helping diversion at Mysuru and Magadi roads, much before the NICE Junction on either side. Challaghatta Metro station is at one end of the MAR, and the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has planned another at Kadabagere at Magadi Road end. The work on the MAR, the big-ticket project, was launched in 2018 and is expected to cost Rs 575 crore to BDA by the time it is commissioned. The project involves a major railway-under-bridge (RuB) on Mysuru Road, the work on which is under way. "Most of the road project is complete, and we plan to open the entire carriageway on Nov 1," a BDA engineer told TOI. BDA has acquired a small portion of the Sulikere forest area with the forest clearance, the engineer added. The road will run parallel to NICE Road and will be 100 metres wide (328 feet). It will consist of the main carriageway of 23 metres (75 feet), including a 3-metre wide median (9.8 feet), a park area of 27.5 metres (90 feet) on each side of the MAR, a service road of 7 metres (23 feet), a 2-metre (6.5-foot) wide cycle track on each side, and a 2-metre (6.5-foot) wide footpath on each side. MAR is the arterial road that cuts through the Nadaprabhu Kempecowda Layout (NPKL), providing access to BDA and private layouts. BDA is developing NPKL in areas falling in Kengeri and Yeshwanthpur hoblis over an area of about 4,000 acres. There is renewed interest among many NPKL allottees to build houses as the MAR project picked up momentum, engineers said. The peripheral ring road (PRR) for the city, too, is in the pipeline. The arterial road is designed in such a way that it will integrate and become part of the proposed PRR. The road project, planned initially as peripheral ring road (PRR-II), was delayed for a long time due to land acquisition issues. BDA officials struggled to acquire 325 acres of private land. The govt resolved the issues after the cabinet cleared a proposal to return half of the farmland it acquired in the form of BDA plots to landowners. "BDA engineers are working hard to finish the main road as early as possible. They are coordinating with the forest department and landowners to solve the critical gaps. The BDA chairman will announce the date of completion soon," said Manivannan P, BDA commissioner.
