Clean, new Bengaluru is DCM's vision
BENGALURU: Greater Bengaluru will come into existence in a few days, and promises to be a city with a new, clean look. Through the Swachhta Abhiyan, garbage will be disposed of and a clean Bengaluru will be built, Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar declared on Monday, at the foundation laying ceremony of a 4MLD capacity ground-level reservoir in Pulakeshi Nagar assembly constituency. 'Bengaluru is being given a new look through Greater Bengaluru. It will be launched in two or three days, and immediately after that, a cleanliness campaign will be started. The public can call the corporation helpline to report garbage lying on roads, and it will be cleaned up. A clean Bengaluru will be created,' he said. The DCM, who was on city rounds covering areas of Mosque Road, Fraser Town and other areas in Pulakeshi Nagar assembly segment, said Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board's reservoir in the constituency will help about 30,000 houses and 3.50 lakh people. 'In this area, Rs 130crore will be spent on roads, Rs 43crore on flyovers, Rs 320crore on ward development, and Rs 650crore on a new flyover. Your property records will be digitized and sent to your doorstep free of cost. This will be done in a big way soon,' Shivakumar announced. He stated that local MLA AC Srinivas was pressuring the government to build a school and hospital in this constituency. 'Wherever the MLA finds land or if there is old school land, I am committed to building a new school. The corporation is also looking for land to construct a hospital,' he said. White-topping should last over 30 years: DKS Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stressed that the white-topping of roads being undertaken by the BBMP should be so good that they should last for at least 30 years. 'This is why frequent inspections (of roads) are being done,' he said after inspecting road works in various parts of the city on Monday. 'We do not inspect what officials show us. We inspect where I tell you to.' Asked about his statement that Bengaluru's garbage disposal has become a mafia, he said, 'The court has dismissed the stay order on garbage disposal tenders. The court has allowed the tender to be called within four months. We will do this and take up the garbage disposal work. We have documents showing some people have submitted tenders sitting in one house. But we will provide clean governance and build a clean Bengaluru.' Asked about the flood situation during the rainy season, he said, 'Precautionary measures have been taken to manage the situation during the rainy season. The officials and I are alert.' ENS

Bengaluru to get a new look with ‘Swachhata Abhiyan'
Bengaluru: 'Greater Bengaluru will come into existence in a few days. Then, through the Swachhta Abhiyan, a clean Bengaluru will be built by disposing garbage in the city. Through this, Bengaluru will be given a new look,' said DCM DK Shivakumar. DCM DK Shivakumar spoke at the foundation stone laying ceremony of a 4 MLD capacity reservoir by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board in Pulakeshinagar assembly constituency on Monday. 'The project that was laid today will provide water to about 30,000 houses and 2.50 lakh people. In this area, 130 crores will be spent on roads, 43 crores on flyovers, 320 crores on other ward development, a new flyover at a cost of 650 crores, your property records will be digitized and sent to your doorstep free of cost. This will be done in a big way soon. A trust map project will be implemented to avoid having to go to the office to get planning permission to build a house in an area of 50X80,' he said. 'Bengaluru is being given a new look through Greater Bengaluru. It will be launched in two to three days. Immediately after that, a cleanliness campaign will be launched in Bengaluru. Wherever the public tells about garbage in Bengaluru by calling the corporation's helpline, the corporation will clean it. In this way, a clean Bengaluru will be created,' he said. 'We have been delivering on our promises. If there is a government that has fulfilled its promises properly, it is the only one that is Congress-led. When the BJP government was in power earlier, did they promise to deposit Rs 15 lakh in your account and give you alms? We have given this guarantee scheme because the prices of essential commodities have sky-rocketed and incomes have plummeted under the BJP government. We have given this scheme so that your life can run smoothly amidst the price hike,' he said. 'Srinivas used to say, 'Build a school and a hospital in this constituency.' DK Shivakumar is committed to building a new school wherever the MLAs find land or if there is an old school land, give it to them. The corporation is also looking for land for the construction of a hospital,' he assured. 'Ambedkar said that for the progress of society, women should also progress. All castes, religions, and constitutions should be protected and justice should be provided to all classes through the constitution. AC Srinivas has entered the history page of this constituency through the water works project being carried out today. Srinivas is implementing this project to provide permanent drinking water to your homes,' he said. 'There is strength in unity. Congress tries to unite everyone. But BJP is trying to divide everyone. Srinivas is trying to solve your problems. There are many poor people in this constituency. Our government is here to help you in your life,' he said. 'Just recently, they have come forward to supply tanker water to every house for Rs 650 through the Cauvery, Sanchari Cauvery project. This project has been implemented to prevent tanker water mafia. Through this project, pure Cauvery water is being supplied to every house. After I came to power, the Cauvery fifth phase project has been implemented. Then, an additional 6 TMC of water has been provided to supply to Bangalore. In this way, drinking water can be supplied to Bangalore for the next 30-40 years,' he said. Now, treated water is being supplied to the lakes of Nelamangala and Kolar. Now, only Rs 1,000 can be paid to get Cauvery water connection for small houses. In the last assembly elections, the people of this constituency stood behind AC Srinivas and gave us the strength that you gave us by winning 136 seats. During the Lok Sabha elections, you blessed the Congress party by voting for it without wavering. I have come here to repay this debt of yours,' he said. 'God does not give blessings or curses. He only gives opportunities. What matters is what we do when we get the opportunity. After Srinivas became an MLA, he would come to me at least three times a week and discuss your constituency. He would keep mentioning issues like drinking water, sewage, and roads. He would not talk about the five guarantee schemes that we had given. He would only talk about the work that needs to be done in his constituency,' he said.

Sanchari Cauvery for dry season, will keep tanker mafia in check: Karnataka Dy CM
BENGALURU: With water tanker supply turning into a mafia in Bengaluru, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has launched the Sanchari Cauvery project to supply water to the public at a low price. It is one of its kind in the country, said Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, after launching the programme on Friday. BWSSB has fixed Rs 660 for 4,000 litres of water and Rs 740 for 6,000 litres. 'Those involved in the water tanker business have dug about 3,000 borewells and charge up to Rs 3,000 per tanker. Today, under the Sanchari Cauvery scheme, water rates are fixed. This is not tubewell water, but clean drinking water provided by BWSSB,' Shivakumar said. Last year, when there was a water shortage, the situation was handled in the best possible way. Now, it has been decided to fill the lakes and take steps to improve groundwater level, he added. Shivakumar also briefed the media about his recent visit to Delhi and meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Amidst rising water tanker prices, BWSSB launches Sanchari Cauvery initiative
The much-awaited Sanchari Cauvery initiative, where the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will provide Cauvery water in tankers, was launched on Friday. Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who launched the Kaveri on Wheels app on Friday, said the it was brought to control the 'water tanker mafia'. 'This water tanker mafia has drilled over 3,000 borewells and have been fleecing people up to ₹3,000 per load of water. We have started this initiative to curb this. Bengaluru is the first city in the country to provide BIS certified drinking water from a river in tankers,' he said. BWSSB has roped in 250 water tankers and established 55 Cauvery Connect Centres, essentially large water tankers, mostly in the outer zones to run the initiative, said Ram Prasath Manohar, chairman, BWSSB. He also said the board has launched the dedicated app and a website for citizens to book water tankers. 'Customers can book water tankers, make the payment, and track the tankers on the app. Water will be delivered within 24 hours,' he said. Details of the tanker and the driver will also be shared, and a helpline will be available for grievance redressal, he added. The cost of a 12,000-litre tanker load of water supplied by BWSSB will be ₹1,290, within a 2-km radius and ₹70 a km thereafter. Residents of the outer zones still dependent on water tankers lament that it has been launched only as the summer is drawing to a close and the monsoon will set in less than three weeks. 'This is a great initiative, the decision for which was taken when the crisis was at its peak. But by the time it has been implemented, the summer is almost drawing to a close,' said Jagadish Reddy of Varthur Rising. However, BWSSB sources said that this would not be limited to the summer alone and will be a permanent programme. Meanwhile, the prices of water tankers in the city have crossed the ₹1,500 and ₹1,700 mark for a tanker load of 12,000 litres in areas where apartments are still to get water connections under Cauvery V Stage. A businessman who runs a fleet of water tankers in Mahadevapura zone, who did not wish to be named, said that with the Cauvery V Stage, the demand had indeed fallen in some pockets and that had hit the overall business of water tankers. 'We have a few pockets and apartments who still have contracts with us. Meanwhile, groundwater levels have been depleting, and diesel prices increased this summer sending the costs of extracting and transporting groundwater northwards. Given that we also have lost customers this summer, we are forced to jack up prices and recover our costs from the existing customer base,' he said. Sarala Cauvery EMI option for Cauvery connections Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) also launched Sarala Cauvery, an initiative where residents get an option to pay the charges to get a connection in 12 EMIs, on Friday. While apartment complexes can make a down payment of 20% of the total charges initially and pay the rest in 12 EMIs, connections for houses less than 600 sq. ft, mostly the urban poor, can get a new connection by paying just ₹1,000 and pay the rest in 12 EMIs. 'This initiative is designed to support the urban poor, middle-class families, and apartment communities,' Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar said. ₹100 crore set aside for Cauvery Aarti at KRS Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D. K. Shivakumar said the Water Resources Department had set aside ₹100 crore to conduct Cauvery Aarti, on the lines of Ganga Aarti at Krishnaraja Sagar. 'We have formed a committee, including Departments of Kannada and Culture, Tourism and Muzrai Departments, and BWSSB chairman Ram Prasath Manohar who successfully conducted Cauvery Aarti at Sankey Tank in Bengaluru has been appointed its chairman,' he said. Sources said that the government was planning to make seating arrangements for 10,000 people at the venue and the event will likely be held during Dasara celebrations later this year. The programme has drawn criticism from multiple quarters, including Peoples' Union of Civil Liberties Karnataka, who have said the money should be instead used to clear the river of pollution. Meanwhile, Mr. Shivakumar brushed aside opposition to the ₹1,900 crore project to fill tanks in Nelamangala with treated water from the Vrishabhavathi Valley, for which he laid the foundation stone on Thursday. He said the project had been successful in Kolar and the water will further get purified when it steeps into the ground and recharge the groundwater level. He also said those opposing the project were not farmers. No tourists at dams Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar said the State government has not only tightened security at all dams in the State, but had also banned tourists visiting any dams. 'Only technical personnel will be allowed near dams till further orders. This is a matter of national security and people must cooperate,' he said.

Dirty water plagues Nanjappa Road residents as BWSSB fails to resolve decade-old contamination issues
BENGALURU: Is Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) supplying contaminated water to residents of Shanti Nagar's Nanjappa Road? Yes, according to residents of the locality, which has over 250 houses. BWSSB diverted the sewage line running from MG Road to Shanthi Nagar about 10 years ago. Since then, they have been getting contaminated water, especially during monsoon. If left unchecked, the sumps get filled with contaminated water, the residents said. Renuka Prasad, founder president of Shanthinagar Residents' Welfare Association, said that despite bringing the matter to the notice of local MLA NA Harris and BWSSB officials several times, nothing has been done to rectify the problem. 'In the WhatsApp Group of the association, some residents have complained that they face health problems such as diarrhoea frequently due to water contamination. The problem should be addressed at the earliest,' Prasad said. Another resident said that the locality has been getting contaminated water for the past 10 years. BWSSB offers only temporary solutions such as cleaning sumps whenever contaminated water is supplied. 'We need a permanent solution. We can't get water pumped out of our sumps at regular intervals. The foul smell because of contaminated water is unbearable. If the civic officials and people's representatives are serious about the problem, they should get an FIR registered against the local BWSSB engineers under the Disaster Management Act,' a senior citizen of the locality said. People who have rented houses in the locality are planning to move away because of this problem. It is really surprising that the problem has not been fixed even after 10 years, a landlord in the locality said. Nagaraj, executive engineer of BWSSB, Shanthi Nagar, said the water and sewage lines in the area were laid long ago. The problem is because of this. 'Work to fix the problem will be taken up under Unaccounted For Water (UFW) that aims at cutting down wastage of water and tenders will be invited soon. The sewage line from here, which is connected to the Intermediate Sewage Pumping Station (ISPS) near Shanthi Nagar Bus Depot, may have a problem. Work on ISPS is almost complete. In a month, all issues pertaining to water and sewage lines will be sorted out,' he said.
