Va Tech Wabag wins work order of Rs 380 cr

From Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board Va Tech Wabag has secured secured a Design, Build, Operate ('DBO') order funded by World Bank, worth about Rs 380 crore from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) towards Design, Engineering, Construction and Commissioning (EPC) of Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) with Tertiary Treatment Facility, Biogas Generation, Solar Sludge Drying Beds and Intermediate Pumping Stations along with associated piping works, scheduled to be completed over 30 months, followed by 10 years of Operation and Maintenance (O&M). These advanced WWTPs, located at four sites in Bommanahalli under the Karnataka Water Security and Disaster Resilience Program, are vital for the region's long-term water sustainability. Utilizing cutting-edge treatment technologies, they enable industrial reuse of tertiary-treated wastewater, reducing freshwater demand and strengthening Bengaluru's water security. The project's green initiative includes anaerobic digestion of sludge to generate biogas, which powers plant operations, lowers external energy use, improves efficiency, and supports broader sustainability goals.

Green technology at STPs to focus on sustainability

In a move towards sustainability and self-reliance, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is set to integrate green technologies into its Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) under the World Bank-supported Urban Water Security and Disaster Management project. The initiative will prioritise the scientific and sustainable management of wastewater through innovative models such as solar power generation and fertiliser production from sewage sludge. Sludge drying systems in STPs A BWSSB official said that solar panels will be installed to generate electricity at the Saul Kere STP. 'In Chikkabegur Lake, BWSSB plans to introduce solar sludge drying systems that will help produce both electricity and organic fertiliser from dried sewage sludge. The objective is to reduce dependency on external energy sources and make STPs financially self-sustaining,' said the official. Mega project to enhance water resilience The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,323 crore — including a Rs 1,000 crore loan from the World Bank — aims to improve wastewater treatment, groundwater conservation, and flood control across Bengaluru. BWSSB has already prepared detailed project reports and is ready to begin implementation. Nine new STPs are proposed under the project, with a major portion of the funds — about Rs 706 crore — allocated for the Bommanahalli zone. The plan includes works like lake rejuvenation, laying of pipeline networks, lift pumping stations, and installation of green technology solutions at Saul Kere and a new 15 MLD unit at Chikkabegur. Dual benefits through plants A BWSSB official further explained that the solar sludge drying system will convert wet sewage by-products into reusable dry sludge using solar energy. This dried sludge can then be repurposed as organic fertiliser. If solar panels are also installed at these sites, they can simultaneously generate electricity to power the operations, making the process both eco-friendly and cost-effective. BWSSB is already generating 2.5 MW of electricity at five major STPs: two units (60 MLD and 150 MLD) at K&C Valley, 150 MLD at Vrishabhavathi Valley, 100 MLD at Hebbal, and 90 MLD at Bellandur — all using biogas. Building on this model, the agency now plans to set up a 500 kW biogas-powered unit at the upcoming 35 MLD STP in Anjanapura, Bommanahalli zone, under the World Bank project .

WB okays USD 426 mn for Bengaluru Water Security project

Bengaluru: The World Bank has sanctioned USD 426 million for a new initiative to enhance water security for over four million residents in Bengaluru, officials said. Karnataka Water Security and Resilience Programme will also help Bengaluru mitigate flooding by reviving the city's 183 lakes, which act as natural sponges during heavy rainfall, said a press release. 'This will also help communities through early warning systems and improved responses to extreme weather by strengthening the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre,' said Kristoffer Welsien and Anup Karanth, the task team leaders for the programme. Auguste Tano Kouame, the World Bank's Country Director for India, said the programme will also help increase the revenues of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board. 'It will mobilise USD 5 million in private capital. This will improve efficiency, replace aging water pipes, and tap the private sector to create innovative tools like smart water meters,' Kouame was quoted as saying in the release. The programme will also ensure sewerage connections to over 1,00,000 households and facilitate the construction of nine Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to prevent sewage from entering lakes and drains. According to the release, treated wastewater will be reused for industrial purposes and for recharging groundwater in the Greater Bengaluru area.

Dy CM DK Shivakumar: Don't build without plan, no approval for 2.5 lakh houses in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has appealed to people not to build houses without building plan approval. He said that the Supreme Court in its recent ruling has given directions that water and electricity connections should not be provided to buildings without plan approval and occupancy certificate. Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Shivakumar said: 'Over 2.5 lakh people in urban areas and villages have built houses without getting building plan approval and have now applied for electricity and water connections.' 'Some of those who have built houses without any plan approval have paid deposits to the electric boards requesting new connections. We are discussing with officials on what action we can take within the legal framework so that the general public are not put to any inconvenience,' he said. He said that in the wake of the SC directive, it is difficult to legalize a house if it is built illegally. 'The SC directive is being implemented in the state in a hurry. Officials are trying to ensure that they do not face any further problem,' Shivakumar said adding that officials are blaming politicians and, therefore, they have come forward to resolve this issue. On introducing the Akrama Sakrama Bill to legalize illegal buildings, Shivakumar said that the SC has already stayed the Bill. 'Our government is discussing how to resolve all the problems related to 'A' khata and B khata', he said. He said that after the SC ruling, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board is facing problems as it provided 39,000 new water supply connections in June last year in 110 villages, while this year, they were able to provide only 300 connections.
