You've been playing Monopoly wrong as there's 'mind-blowing' little-known rule

Monopoly players have only just discovered a little-known rule which could speed up the whole board game, but not everyone is a fan of the 'mind-blowing' addition Monopoly is a staple game at many family gatherings - but it can often get quite heated. There's usually someone who cheats, someone who takes it too seriously, and someone who gets easily annoyed. A game of Monopoly can take hours, but apparently it's actually meant to last around 60 to 90 minutes. So why does it always take so long? It turns out many of us have been playing the board game, which can be traced back to 1903, wrong. There's a little-known rule which can completely alter the course of the game, and make it a lot quicker. But not everyone is a fan of it. ‌ The forgotten rule has recently surfaced online, and many have admitted they've been playing it wrong this whole time. ‌ The topic was discussed on the Triple M Breakfast show, where host Beau Ryan said he'd had a "realisation the other day" after playing Monopoly with his son. A clip of the chat was shared to TikTok. After landing on Park Lane, which is the second most expensive property on the standard UK board, he decided not to buy it. However, his son then shouted: "Buying it!". Confused, Beau had replied: "Hang on champion, you can't buy that, you didn't land on it." But his son then claimed the property goes to auction if the person who landed on it doesn't buy it. Beau didn't believe his son and asked him to go and get the rule book - and he was left shocked when his son was correct. Beau explained: "If anyone lands on a property in Monopoly, and they don't buy it, the other plays can auction it." Fellow co-host Cat Lynch said: "I didn't know that. You've blown my mind." ‌ Beau went on to say he thinks this little-known rule "ruins the game". In the comment section, it became clear others also had no idea these were the real rules. "Wow, been playing it wrong my whole life," said one person. "This is why Monopoly takes so long. I get it now," wrote another, while a third commented: "You just ruined Monopoly for everyone." However, some people knew the rules all along. "P***es me off when people argue against this rule. Game goes on for months if you ignore it," said one person. Someone else wrote: "I'm a rules girl and am 100% a Monopoly girl. I love the Auction rule. Also, Free Parking is a nothing square. You don't claim money put in the middle. The money going in the middle should be paid to bank." In the rules, it states: "Whenever a player lands on an unowned property he may buy that property from the Bank at its printed price [...] If he does not wish to buy the property it is sold at auction by the Banker to the highest bidder."

The Deal Or No Deal star STILL shrouded in mystery as fans floored by identity of game show's original banker

Deal Or No Deal fans have been left floored by the identity of the game show's original banker - but one figure still remains shrouded in mystery. Earlier this week, it was revealed who exactly was behind the phone in the original series hosted by Noel Edmonds, which aired from 2005 to 2016. Unbeknownst to viewers, the mystery man had been gracing British TV screens long before Deal Or No Deal and was Coronation Street star Glenn Hugill. However, when the show was rebooted in 2023 and Stephen Mulhern took the helm a different banker took Glenn's place. It is still unknown who is the banker in the new series and next to no information has been released about him. Despite this revelation, the host of the reboot, Stephen, maintains that he has no idea who the current show's Banker is. However, when the show was rebooted in 2023 and Stephen Mulhern (pictured) took the helm a different banker took Glenn's place 'I don't know who the Banker is,' he said, 'so I wouldn't be able to recognise who it was - he could walk past me at any point.' Mulhern notes that the voice on the other end of the phone is 'male,' but divulges no further information. Stephen previously joked about the banker in a social media post back in March addressing when the next season of the show would air. He posted a video of himself alongside the caption, 'Don't worry: Deal Or No Deal is coming back! 'The Banker's just gone off on holiday. Again. One of his cruises, I'd imagine, tormenting strangers over the buffet. 'I'll let you know when the new series is about to start so you don't miss a single dramatic moment!' The original banker, Glenn, is best known to fans for his role as police detective Alan McKenna, a part he played from 1996 to 1997, appearing in 86 episodes of the soap. In the show, Detective Alan McKenna was due to marry Fiona Middleton (Angela Griffin), but their nuptials were called off when he discovers her one-night stand with Jim McDonald (Charles Lawson). But since his character was last seen on the cobbles, Glenn has flipped the script, starring from the sidelines on Deal Or No Deal. In addition to playing the role of the elusive Banker, he was reportedly also involved in the assembly of the show as an executive producer, which was disappointing to fans. Glenn ran his own production company behind the scenes, Possessed, which he sold to ITV two years ago to join the team at Wheelhouse, Jimmy Kimmel's media behemoth. It had been previously insinuated that Noel Edmonds was friends with the Banker and, thereby, knew his identity. Earlier this year, a contestant who won a record-breaking amount on Deal Or No Deal revealed all about her experience on the show. Nay Nay, 28, bagged £75,000 on the popular ITV game show hosted by Stephen Mulhern, 47, during an episode that aired in February. After growing up watching the programme with her mother, the paralegal from London decided to apply when she searched online to see if it was still broadcast. The decision paid off and Nay Nay ended up breaking show records with her huge win, and has told MailOnline how 'blessed' she feels. Throughout her game, Nay Nay stuck to her plan of not taking any of the Banker's offers and staying with her original box until the end - and it proved to be a great success. She shared her experience of being on the show, including insider details of how contestants are selected to play. When a new game begins the names of every player in the studio are spun on a screen and one is randomly chosen. Quite often, contestant's family members will be shown sat on the front row of the audience and in Nay Nay's case, her grandmother. 'They're not actually sitting there when the names are turning... they move them there once you're selected to play,' she explained. The paralegal revealed she didn't know she would be chosen beforehand, and added 'you will never actually know when it's your turn to play'.

British TV mystery is solved as fans discover identity of Deal or No Deal Banker

One of British TV's biggest mysteries has finally been solved. For years, Deal or No Deal viewers wondered about the identity of the show's original Banker, given that his voice was never heard and he only featured in phone calls to host Noel Edmonds. But now, the man behind those big-money offers (and the measly ones too) has come to light—and he's actually a Coronation Street star. The earliest Banker in the Channel 4 series – which aired from 2005 to 2016 before being revived by Stephen Mulhern in 2023 – was actor Glenn Hugill. Glenn, now 55, played Alan McKenna on the cobbles from 1996 to 1997, starring in 86 episodes. His character was a detective, and he dated Fiona Middleton (Angela Griffin). They were due to get married, but Jim McDonald (Charles Lawson) exposed his one-night stand with Fiona on their wedding day. Glenn didn't stick around in Weatherfield after that, but he did go on to appear in other shows, including Dalziel and Pascoe, The Upper Hand, and Chandler and Co. In 2001, he also presented the series The Mole. Behind the camera, Glenn had his own production company named Possessed. In 2023, he sold it to ITV and joined Wheelhouse, the media giant established by Jimmy Kimmel. It remains unknown who took over from Glenn as the Banker, but it's believed he stayed in the role for a year. Reboot host Stephen previously said of the Banker's identity: 'I don't know who the Banker is, so I wouldn't be able to recognise who it was. 'So, he could walk past me at any point.' He added that the voice on the end of the phone is 'male,' but that's all he really knows. 'Supposedly, he goes into the hotel and listens to the contestants and what they're up to. So when he comes on the phone to me, I've got to repeat what he says.' This isn't the first time the identity of the Banker has been spoken about publicly, but it seems Deal or No Deal viewers are only just catching on. In 2015, former Pointless host Richard Osmon told Metro that Glenn was the Banker. It was also discovered that Glenn was an executive producer on Deal or No Deal, leaving some fans disappointed. Speaking about his show Two Tribes and how it came to be, Richard said at the time: '[It] was an idea that Glenn Hugill – the Banker on Deal or No Deal – and I had been thinking about for a long time.' More Trending Glenn himself has never addressed the rumours, but it was previously implied that Noel, 76, was friends with whoever the Banker was. Deal or No Deal ran for almost 3,000 episodes with Noel at the helm, giving away over £40million to contestants during its first run. While the maximum prize now is £100,000, players used to be able to win £250,000. View More » Noel also hosted celebrity specials, which saw the likes of James Corden take on the Banker at his own game. Got a story?
