Smurfs review: Rihanna is Smurfette – but this shoddy musical reboot is among the laziest animations of the year

It's as if comic strip artist Pierre 'Peyo' Culliford's blue-skinned forest dwellers weren't designed for a big-screen feature-length movie. The format doesn't suit them – and this shoddy musical reboot ranks among the laziest animations of the year. Rihanna, would you believe, is a producer of this vacuous fantasy from director Chris Miller (Puss in Boots) and writer Pam Brady (Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken). The Barbadian superstar also lends her voice to Smurfette, the only female Smurf in the village, whose patience is severely tested after a mob of wicked wizards kidnap her beloved Papa Smurf (John Goodman). Business as usual, then. But we also have a Smurf with an identity crisis (James Corden's No Name Smurf), and a bizarre trip to the real world, where nothing much happens and nobody ever notices the tiny blue trespassers. Natasha Lyonne and Nick Offerman provide support, and they'll appreciate the pay packets, I'm sure. But this new-and-unimproved Smurfs movie shows very few signs of intelligent life.

Rihanna, ASAP Rocky, And Children Attend Her Father's Funeral In Barbados

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky gathered their children to visit Barbados for her father's funeral. Ronald Fenty was laid to rest on Tuesday (July 8) at Garfield Sobers Gymnasium, according to WIC News. The outlet reported Ronald Fenty died at the end of May at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering from a combination of acute respiratory failure, pancreas cancer, aspiration pneumonia, contributed by acute renal failure, and acute tubular necrosis. In the obituary, Mr. Fenty was remembered as the father of six children, grandfather to 10, and great-grandfather to several more. The document also referred to Rihanna as 'The Right Excellent Robyn Rihanna Fenty,' in acknowledgement of the national honor given to the Grammy winner by Barbados in 2021. The soon-to-be mother of three has not made a public statement regarding the death of her father. Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley shared an Instagram post at the time and confirmed his passing. 'It is with deep sorrow, that on behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, I extend my sincere condolences to our beloved National Hero, The Right Excellent Robyn Rihanna Fenty, on the passing of her father, Ronald Fenty,' began the honorable caption. 'Ronald was a father, a friend, a neighbour, and a proud Barbadian. To Rihanna, her mother Monica, her brothers Rorrey, Rajad and Jamie, sisters Kandy and Samantha, and all members of the Fenty family, I offer my deepest sympathies. I equally extend my condolences to Ronald's friends and loved ones, both here in Barbados and abroad.' More from Skepta Challenges A$AP Rocky To Rap Battle In U.K. Versus U.S.A. Cricket West Indies echoes Prime Minister Mottleys call for regional unity and purpose to overcome challenges and return to glory

Saint John's [Antigua and Barbuda], July 12 (ANI): Cricket West Indies (CWI) stood in full alignment with the powerful call to action issued by Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, during her stirring address at the CWI and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) Awards Gala held in Barbados, an official statement from the CWI said. Her message to the region was clear: the time has come to confront longstanding challenges in governance, investment, and purpose, and to reignite the fighting spirit that once made West Indies cricket the envy of the world. Drawing a direct comparison between the current landscape of West Indies cricket and the heroic triumph of the 1975 World Cup team - the members of which were honoured during the ceremony - Prime Minister Mottley called on the region to summon that same determination to rise again. "Just as every mountain peak has valleys, we can find the peak again," she said. "As sure that the joy of that 1975 team spread through the region then, it will spread through this region again." Quoting the words of legendary Victorian Poet, Rudyard Kipling, author of the poem "IF" she said "'If we can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two imposters the same', that will define us, not just on the field, but in all that we do." The Barbadian leader referenced this piece of writing as a great lesson in how to approach life, citing additional exerts - "'If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, or walk with Kings - nor loose the common you can make one heap of all your winnings and risk it in on one turn of pitch-and-toss, and lose, and start again at your beginnings and never breathe a word about your loss'. What I am really saying is that we have a responsibility as leaders, as people of the Caribbean, to ensure that those who walk the path to bring honour and glory to us, are given every opportunity to be the best that they can be." She underscored the importance of grassroots development and the urgent need to harness the full breadth of regional talent. "In test cricket, only New Zealand has a population approximate to us, all the other nations have a bigger pool from which to draw their talent. So, if we have a small population and are not maximizing it to the extent where we dig deep into our communities to draw out the talent, then something must be fundamentally wrong with us." she asserted. Speaking then as Chair of CARICOM, Prime Minister Mottley pledged regional support for the continued representation of West Indies cricket on the global stage, particularly regarding cricket's re-entry into the 2028 Olympic Games. "We have already been made a victim of too many instances of poor negotiating. We have now to summon the will to pull the best that we can muster regionally, to make the case for defending our right to retain the integrity of West Indian cricket, which will celebrate 100 years in 2028" she said. "Let us remind the world why these people in these islands continue to rally, and rally, and rally." In speaking directly to the players in attendance, as well as those across the region, she issued a challenge for them to take the lead. "I want the players, male and female, to know that it is not where you stand, but it is always how you rise when adversity hits you, and the way you get up and play the next shot. If you can do that for us, then I believe honestly, that we will rise to the top again." Cricket West Indies remains committed to honouring the legacy of the past while actively working toward a vibrant and united future for West Indies cricket--one driven by purpose, guided by governance, and powered by the resilient spirit of our people.(ANI)

US singer Chris Brown denies more charges in UK assault case

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - American R&B singer Chris Brown on Friday pleaded not guilty in a UK court to further charges stemming from an alleged London nightclub brawl in 2023. Fans of the singer, who is in the middle of an international tour, packed the public gallery at London's Southwark Crown Court. Brown, who had a troubled relationship with Barbadian singer Rihanna, turned to face his supporters at the end of the hearing, waving and blowing them a kiss. "I love you Chris," one of them said. He formally entered not guilty pleas to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and having an offensive weapon -- a bottle -- in a public place. Brown, who is on £5.0 million ($6.7 million) bail, spent nearly a week in jail in May before being released. Police arrested him at a five-star hotel in the northwestern city of Manchester hours after he reportedly flew in by private jet. Judge Tony Baumgartner earlier gave him the green light to continue his scheduled tour, which began on June 8 in Amsterdam. Under the terms of his bail, Brown will forfeit the £5.0 million guarantee if he fails to return for court proceedings. NOT GUILTY PLEAS At a hearing last month, Brown entered a not guilty plea to the more serious charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. The charges all relate to the same alleged incident at Tape, an exclusive private members' club in Hanover Square in London, on February 19, 2023, while Brown was touring in the UK. The victim was allegedly struck several times with a bottle before being pursued, punched and kicked. Brown appeared in the dock on Friday with co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, 39, also a US national, with whom he is jointly charged. Akinlolu also entered a not guilty plea to the same actual bodily harm charge. At the earlier hearing he denied the charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. Both men are expected to stand trial in October 2026.
