Where We Are Going Today: ‘Hokkaido' Japanese restaurant in Jeddah

Jeddah's food scene continues to evolve, and Hokkaido on Rawdah street stands out as the city's first all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurant. Guests choose from three main dining experiences: a hot pot course, a barbecue course, or a mixed course that offers the best of both worlds. Take your pick from an extensive menu featuring meats and seafood, including black angus beef, crab, squid, mussels, octopus, and a sashimi platter. The barbecue experience is a standout. Grilling your own meats on a tabletop grill adds a fun, interactive element, and the freshness of the ingredients shines through. The hot pot is just as customizable. Create your ideal flavor profile by choosing from four broth options, mixing and matching — sukiyaki, spicy, tomato, and miso. The buffet includes a wide variety of options, including a spread of tempura, fried noodles, fried rice, assorted sushi, fresh fruit, desserts, and ice cream. You'll also find a selection of noodle types like ramen, glass noodles, and udon. While the food quality justifies it to some extent, the pricing leans toward the higher end, especially for larger groups. If you're visiting, I'd recommend opting for the barbecue option for more flavor control and a bit of table-side excitement.

Kenyan police officer goes missing in Haiti gang ambush

A Kenyan police officer deployed in Haiti as part of the international security force has gone missing after an attack by suspected gang members. The force was attacked by gangs as they were helping a vehicle from the Haitian national police that got stuck in a ditch, the mission said in a statement. "As the rescue teams attempted to resolve the situation, suspected gang members lying in wait launched an attack," it added. Following the attack, specialised teams have been deployed to conduct a search for the missing officer. The incident happened on Tuesday during a patrol operation in Haiti's town of Pont-Sondé, the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission to Haiti said. Haiti's local media reported that the officer could have been killed by the gangs but this is yet to be confirmed. This is not the first attack on Kenyan officers in Haiti. Last month, a 26-year-old police constable was fatally wounded during an operation in Ségur-Savien, marking the first casualty among the Kenyan contingent. Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai's body was flown back and he was laid to rest this month. Kenya has deployed at least 600 police officers under the MSS mission to Haiti to help in combating gangs. The force was sent to Haiti starting June last year to help restore order to the country, where gangs have seized control of almost the entire capital, Port-au-Prince, as well as large swathes of rural areas. More than 5,500 people were killed in gang-related violence in Haiti in 2024 and more than a million people have fled their homes. Haiti police raid gang leader's stronghold in capital

The government of Haiti says police have launched a large-scale operation in a shantytown controlled by powerful gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, who is widely known as Barbecue. The authorities say several gang members have been killed in the Lower Delmas area of the capital Port-au-Prince. Local reports say military drones carrying explosives are being used in the operation. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé praised the assault. He said it was the work of a special task force created two days ago to tackle insecurity. Chérizier, aged 47, is the feared leader of Viv Ansam (Live Together), a coalition of gangs that control much of the city. It is not clear whether Kenyan police officers deployed in Haiti last year to help fight the gangs are involved in the security operation. Last week, a Kenyan police officer - who was on patrol with the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support mission - was killed in a confrontation with gang members. The men fighting gang leader Barbecue for power in Haiti On patrol with Kenyan forces inside Haiti's gang warzone Gang control in Port-au-Prince has led to an almost complete breakdown of law and order, the collapse of health services and emergence of a food security crisis. More than 5,500 people were killed in gang-related violence in the Caribbean nation in 2024 and more than a million people have fled their homes. Haiti's transitional presidential council, the body created to re-establish democratic order, has made little progress towards organising long-delayed elections.
