Kenyan police officer goes missing in Haiti gang ambush
A Kenyan police officer deployed in Haiti as part of the international security force has gone missing after an attack by suspected gang members.
The force was attacked by gangs as they were helping a vehicle from the Haitian national police that got stuck in a ditch, the mission said in a statement.
"As the rescue teams attempted to resolve the situation, suspected gang members lying in wait launched an attack," it added.
Following the attack, specialised teams have been deployed to conduct a search for the missing officer.
The incident happened on Tuesday during a patrol operation in Haiti's town of Pont-Sondé, the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission to Haiti said.
Haiti's local media reported that the officer could have been killed by the gangs but this is yet to be confirmed.
This is not the first attack on Kenyan officers in Haiti.
Last month, a 26-year-old police constable was fatally wounded during an operation in Ségur-Savien, marking the first casualty among the Kenyan contingent.
Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai's body was flown back and he was laid to rest this month.
Kenya has deployed at least 600 police officers under the MSS mission to Haiti to help in combating gangs.
The force was sent to Haiti starting June last year to help restore order to the country, where gangs have seized control of almost the entire capital, Port-au-Prince, as well as large swathes of rural areas.
More than 5,500 people were killed in gang-related violence in Haiti in 2024 and more than a million people have fled their homes.

After her mom passed, Couch found comfort reading through old posts. One day, she went to check her mom's profile and it was memorialized. 'The only thing that I can see is my memories that she's tagged me in or stuff that I've tagged her in,' Couch said. Couch says she was shocked, and she immediately tried to find who had memorialized the page, but no one came forward. 'Somebody took that away from us,' Couch said. It made Couch curious. How simple is it to convince Facebook someone is dead? 'I made a fake Facebook. I made myself the legacy contact and then I reported it to memorialize it,' Couch said. 'I found some old lady picture on Facebook, made it her profile picture, I put her picture with a ChatGPT obituary and all you have to do- you don't have to be logged into Facebook- I just went ahead through a Safari browser, report - memorialized.' Couch says she has reached out to Facebook nine times since May and has only gotten one response. 'They basically told me that there was nothing that they could do. It was irreversible and once it's done, it's done,' Couch said. 'It's cruel and Facebook has to do something about it.' News Center 7 reached out to Facebook to see if it's possible to recover Couch's mother's profile, but we have not heard back. Book Influencer Killed in Shocking Stabbing Incident
A popular Brazilian book influencer was tragically killed last week in a horrific stabbing incident. Tais Bruna de Castro, 36, was stabbed to death while working at the Beco Fino shopping center in Jundiaí, São Paulo on Monday, June 2. According to CNN Brasil, Castro was killed by Cláudio Elizeu, 40, a cleaner at the shopping complex. Castro was having lunch when she was attacked. Elizeu, who turned himself in to authorities and was arrested, said he killed the social media personality because she was not interested in his romantic advances. Elizeu reportedly stabbed Castro at least 20 times and also broke into an office area, where he damaged furniture, doors and windows. After news of Castro's death began circulating, the Instagram account she operated--Leitora Fashion, or "Reader Fashion--released a heartbreaking tribute post. "This week, our dear Tais Bruna, the owner of this profile, left us in a very sad and even unbelievable way," the caption for the post reads. "Fashion Reader was one of her joys. Talking about literature, suggesting new works and chatting with you guys here made her day happier. We, the family, sincerely appreciate all the messages and prayers dedicated to her. Her smile, her sweetness and all the joy she always spread will stay in our hearts forever. "Today heaven gained one of the most special people that has ever passed through this world. Ohio House passes school bus safety bill spurred by deadly Clark County crash
Jun. 11—Anyone caught passing a school bus illegally would face significant fines and penalties to their driver's license under an Ohio House bill that passed 88-to-0. House Bill 3, the School Bus Safety Act, sponsored by Reps. Bernie Willis, R-Springfield, and Cecil Thomas, D-Cincinnati, would appropriate $10 million from Ohio Lottery funds to add cameras to school buses and educate drivers about school bus safety. Part of the $10 million would go toward school bus safety grants for local school districts. Cameras could be installed on school buses to record people improperly passing a school bus and those recordings could then be used in a criminal case, according to the bill. The bill now heads to the Ohio Senate for further consideration. Willis introduced the bill last General Assembly following a fatal crash in Clark County on State Route 41. Hermanio Joesph, a Haitian immigrant who did not have a valid driver's license, crossed over the center line into the oncoming lane, hitting a Northwestern Local Schools bus and flipping it over in August 2023. Aiden Clark, 11, died and about two dozen other students were injured. The state put together a school bus safety task force afterwards, which made several recommendations to improve school bus safety, all of which Willis included in the bill. "This bill has been a major collaborative effort between numerous interested parties across the state and nation," Willis said. Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman, R-Lima, said the opportunity for safety grants will help schools add seat belts, should they want to, along with many different safety upgrades outlined in the bill. "This issue comes down to sculpting (law) so that locals have their own option," Huffman said. "There are many local school districts that want to add seat belts and have the money to do it. Some have the money to do it and they don't want to add seat belts, for whatever reason." Ohio House Minority Leader Allison Russo, D-Upper Arlington, said the bill will help "make sure that children are safe to and from school." Paul Imhoff of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators, which represents Ohio's public school superintendents, testified in favor of the bill. He said it's clear thousands of drivers are disobeying Ohio's laws around school buses, and cracking down on people who don't follow the rules will be a good idea. "We urge you to support H.B. 3, which will improve the safety of Ohio students during their journeys to and from school," Imhoff said. Rudoph J. Breglia, of the School Bus Safety Alliance, testified in favor of the bill but additionally advocated for seat belts to be put in school buses. The state task force did not recommend using seat belts, saying there could be unintended consequences for kids who can't get out.
