Perth tobacco stores sprayed with bullets and firebombed
Tobacco stores across Perth have been shot at and firebombed across the weekend as police determine if the incidents are linked. The first shooting unfolded at a smoke shop on Cecil Ave in Cannington when bullets were fired about 1.10am on Saturday. Two off-road motorcycles were seen in the area about the same time before heading into bushland from the Albany Highway. About 4.10am the following morning, two people in a black Holden Barina fired shots towards the same business and then fled the area. Police received reports a Barina matching the description of the car used in the drive-by shooting was on fire near the intersection of Mills Rd West and the Tonkin Highway in Martin about 4.30am on Sunday. Acting Superintendent Eamon Flanagan said police believed both incidents were linked and asked anyone with information that could help identify the offenders to come forward. 'Rest assured, we will leave no stone unturned, we will locate and charge those responsible,' he said. 'Gun violence is a dead end and so is your freedom when we catch up with you. 'The safety of our community is non-negotiable, we will not allow gun violence to run rife in Western Australia.' Another tobacco store was firebombed on Illawarra Crescent in Ballajura about 4.05pm on Monday. Firefighters extinguished a small blaze at the store and no one was injured. A police spokesman said inquiries were ongoing and the matter was being treated as suspicious. 'A number of investigative actions are being undertaken to ascertain whether this incident is linked to the two incidents in Cannington,' a spokesman said.

11-year-old boy dies in serious two-car crash north of Scone
A young boy has died after a serious two-car crash on the New England Highway, about 25 kilometres north of Scone. In the remote area of Murulla, emergency services were called at about 7.45am on Wednesday June 25 to reports of a collision between a Holden Barina and a Nissan Elgrand. The driver of the Barina, an 85-year-old man, had minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing, NSW Police said. An 11-year-old boy was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital with critical injuries, but later died in hospital. Upper Hunter NSW Ambulance inspector Jason Saper said the 11-year-old was in a vehicle with five other people. The other occupants of the van included two women, 38 and 60; a 13-year-old girl; a 16-year-old boy, and a 19-year-old man. They were taken to John Hunter Hospital with injuries that authorities said were not considered life-threatening. "It is quite a remote area, it is difficult getting people and our paramedics out there," Mr Saper said. "There were multiple patients trapped." A witness told the Newcastle Herald that they saw the roof of the van being cut open by rescue crews in order to extricate at least one person. Mr Saper said NSW Ambulance had seven vehicles on the scene, two helicopters with medical teams and three supervisors. "It was quite a serious accident, it is quite emotional when you have a young child who is deteriorating and later passes," he said. Mr Saper said all drivers needed to be careful when travelling on the region's roads. "We all need to wear seatbelts and there is no such thing as safe speeding," he said. "On this occasion, it was likely more people would have died if they had not been wearing seatbelts." NSW Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash and a report will be prepared for the information of the coroner. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or The Hunter Region had seen several horror crashes in the last week, including the death of a 55-year-old woman and a 28-year-old woman who lost her baby in a two-car collision in North Lambton on Sunday, June 22.
