Back in Time, June 7: Baron Brothers and Commercial Trust and Savings Bank
Jun. 7—The Commercial Trust and Savings Bank was built at 222 N. Main St. as a two-story wood structure and opened on Jan. 6, 1897. Harold Kibbee Sr., an early pioneer banker served as cashier and president of the Commercial Trust and Savings Bank for 51 years. The two-story building was moved to the back of the lot in 1906 to make room for a new building (shown in photo). The bank moved to 208 E. Third Ave. in 1961. In 1999, the bank was sold to First National Bank of South Dakota.
Known as the Realty Building, this building at 300 N. Main St. was housed by the Baron Brothers Dry Goods Store and Peterson's Hardware Store. Woolworth's opened at this location on Nov. 25, 1916. On Aug. 7, 1940, a fire destroyed the interior of the store. Baron Brothers moved to the old Piggly Wiggly building in 1959 so that Woolworth's could expand. Numerous doctors and dentist offices were on the second floor while the third floor contained apartments.
