‘Expand free bus route for students'

A state assemblyman is calling for the free Bas Muafakat Johor service to be extended to Parit Yaani in Batu Pahat to provide students the convenience of travelling to and from schools in the town. Yong Peng assemblyman Ling Tian Soon said the bus service currently served two routes and hoped that his suggestion would be considered for implementation next year. 'The route extension will allow students from Parit Yaani to travel to and from school with ease, boosting bus ridership. 'I have made the request to Johor Public Transport Corporation,' said Ling, who is also Johor health and environment committee chairman. He said the YP-001 route, introduced in 2018, looped around Yong Peng town with stops at new villages, Yong Peng Health Clinic and Yong Peng bus terminal, recording some 400 to 500 passengers a month. The second route, YP-002, served stops such as Yong Peng District Council and Kampung Baru Kangkar Baru, and had around 1,300 to 1,400 passengers monthly, he said. 'The YP-002 route, which was added last year, sees a high student ridership especially since the school bus service at one of the new villages ceased this year following the bus driver's retirement. 'I am sure the YP-001 route will see higher ridership if extended to Parit Yaani,' Ling said, adding that the move could also help parents save on transport costs. Bas Muafakat Johor is free for all Malaysians who produce their MyKad when boarding.
