Man charged with stabbing in West Cork remanded in continuing custody
A Dutch man accused in connection with a stabbing in West Cork will be brought before the district court in September.
Bas Mulders, who has an address on Western Road, Clonakilty, appeared before a sitting of Bandon District Court on Monday. The 54-year-old appeared on two charges — assault causing harm and producing an article in the course of a dispute.
Appearing before Judge Joanna Carroll, Mr Mulders was represented by solicitor Conrad Murphy.
The State applied for a continuing remand in custody, by consent, unless he is granted bail in the meantime by the High Court.
He is accused of stabbing another man with a knife during an argument at a location in Clonakilty in the early hours of Tuesday, July 22.
He was denied bail at district court level last Friday, when gardaí objected on the grounds that they had serious concerns that he could coerce or intimidate a witness and/or the alleged injured party. There was also a risk he could flee the jurisdiction, the court was told on Friday.
Judge Joanne Carroll agreed to the State's application for a remand in continuing custody, until August 7, via video link. If granted bail by the High Court, he is to appear in court in person.
Mr Murphy applied for free legal aid for his client, which was granted by Judge Carroll.
