Wellness Wednesday: Body Mass Index vs Basal Metabolic Rate

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – News 13 brings you a segment focused on health and fitness on News 13 Midday every Wednesday called 'Wellness Wednesday'. This week, Personal Trainer Traycee Green from Pure Platinum was in the studio with News 13's Ethan Logue explaining the difference between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Green said your BMI, or Body Mass Index, is your height to weight ratio. 'On average for women, at the first 5 feet, a person is 100 pounds,' said Green. 'And then 5 pounds for each additional inch.' Green said it doesn't take into account somebody who's fit. Green also said it's different for men, as the average weight for men at 5 feet is 105 pounds. For BMR, or Basal Metabolic Rate, is the minimum amount of calories that are needed to function. 'That calculates how many calories you need to sit on the couch, and then you can factor in the exercise and the amount of activity you get every day,' said Green. 'And then once you find out what those calories are, then you can decide if you need to gain weight or lose weight.' Watch the video above for more information about BMI and BMR.
