Lifeline for patients with heart defects

The Miracle Baby Programme (MBP) gives babies and young children with congenital heart diseases life-saving surgery at no cost. Government surgeons and those from Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital in India, renowned in the field of congenital heart surgery, perform the surgeries on a pro bono basis. Health Ministry bore the cost of in-patient admission and post-surgery care. 'The surgery lasts six to 10 hours, followed by intensive post-operative care for four to five days,' said Health Ministry chief of cardiothoracic surgical services Datuk Dr Basheer Ahamed Abdul Kareem. 'Most surgeries in the private sector can cost between RM75,000 and RM150,000.' He added that it was to Penang Hospital's credit that the surgeons from India chose it to conduct MBP. A smaller team from India will visit every six months from here on, and four Malaysian surgeons would go to India to train with them, said Dr Basheer. One of the beneficiaries is four-year-old Noor Izz Medhina Muhamad Samsuri who went through the procedure. Her mother, Noor Izzatie Mohamed Yusoff, said: 'I am grateful that she underwent surgery free of charge under MBP.' Noor Izz's first procedure was in December 2022 when she was just a year old, followed by a second procedure last July. Another patient in the MBP was Eisya Marzuki. Siti Norazidah Mohd Hamzah said her daughter, who's now 19, underwent the surgery at 16. She said that Eisya had symptoms like rapid breathing and shortness of breath, prior to the surgery. 'The opportunity to undergo the surgery was a blessing. 'Now, she is waiting to further her studies,' said Siti Norazidah. Eleven-year-old Iris Sim had a congenital heart defect at birth and lived with it for nearly a decade before MBP gave her the chance to go for surgery. Her mother May Yap, a water filter technician, could not hold back her tears when recounting how she learned about MBP from hospital staff. She said the surgery was done at Penang Hospital a week or two after Iris was accepted into the programme. Now, more children will benefit following the launch of MBP 2.0 by Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim at Penang Hospital. Also present were Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Education Foundation board of trustees chairman Tan Sri Dr Sak Cheng Lum and UTAR chancellor Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik. Lukanisman, in his speech, said MBP was founded by Dr Ling in collaboration with Penang Hospital and Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital. 'This extraordinary cross-border collaboration is a symbol of what can be achieved through compassion and excellence in healthcare,' he said. The first edition of MBP in 2022 successfully treated 18 babies and children. Under MBP 2.0, a total of 23 children underwent heart surgery.

Narivetta review: Tovino Thomas headlines powerful film on systemic oppression

What do 'Jigarthanda Double X', 'Viduthalai 2', and 'Narivetta' have in common? It has protagonists who fall victim to systemic oppression - a hero who represents a system, later realises the truth, who represents the right, and who fights for what's right, even if it means an end to one's Peter (Tovino Thomas) is a man, much like his father. The two men are not interested in doing simple jobs to pass the day. They aim high, which is a testament to their potential. Varghese lives with his mother after his father took his life. He is awaiting calls for two jobs – a village assistant and a police constable. Varghese, who doesn't think twice about borrowing money from the women in his life, is uninterested in both a constable will limit his abilities, he says. However, his situation and the shame of his girlfriend's father force him to take up the constable job. When Varghese dons the uniform, he is an angry man. Basheer (Suraj Venjaramoodu) guides him and keeps his anger in check. When they are posted in Wayanad, they are forced to evacuate a bunch of Adivasis who are protesting for land rights. Director Anuraj Manohar takes a straight approach with 'Narivetta'. It starts with Varghese's life as a man who depends on the women in his life and ends with the moment he finds the true purpose of his life. Of late, Malayalam cinema has cracked the code with cop thrillers. But 'Narivetta' takes a different approach. It follows a non-linear format and takes the story back and initial stretches of 'Narivetta' begin on a slow note as we are introduced to Varghese and his tryst with multiple jobs that he is not satisfied with. Then, we see Varghese romancing his girlfriend (Priyamvada Krishnan), who takes care of his needs. It's only after a temporary separation from her that he lands himself the constable job. This is where the film picks up momentum. It is easy to say that 'Narivetta' could feel like two different films pre- and post-interval. The politics of 'Narivetta' is quite strong. It exposes a corrupt police system and makes us squirm in our seats with every selfish move they make. Keshavadas (Cheran), who initially pretends to be a good cop, changes his colours, much to the shock of Varghese. When the new cop begins to understand the politics behind the Adivasis' protest, it changes his perception and makes him realise his true Thomas is extraordinary in 'Narivetta', especially during the police vs Adivasis stand-off sequence towards the climax. It is brilliantly shot by cinematographer Vijay. And Jakes Bejoy's music lends tension during the moments when there's injustice meted out to the Adivasis. Suraj Venjaramood as the empathetic Basheer makes one believe there are good cops amid many corrupt ones. Cheran, a popular director in Tamil cinema, plays a grey-shaded character. While he is mostly effective, he has a one-tone expression, which dampens the 'Narivetta', the filmmaker exposed police brutality with scenes that shed light on custodial torture and illegal detention. While the film's politics is straightforward, the storyline could have been gripping.3 out of 5 stars for 'Narivetta'.

Gadkari has promised swift action against those responsible for NH-66 collapse near Kooriyad bridge: IUML leader

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MP, E. T. Mohammed Basheerhas said that Union Minister for Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has formed a high-level committee of experts drawn from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to study the structural defects and allied public safety risk along the stretch of the under-construction National Highway-66 stretch in Malappuram district. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Basheer said he had called on Mr Gadkari to apprise him of the grave public concern following the collapse of a significant portion of the NH-66 near the Kooriyad Bridge. Mr Basheer said that Mr. Gadkari stated the Union government would bring the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials and the construction firm they contracted to construct the six-lane highway to book. Mr. Basheer said Mr. Gadkari had withdrawn the bank guarantee for the construction company, an Andhra Pradesh-based firm. 'Mr Gadkari said he would also disqualify the contractor from bidding on any future national highway-related construction works and blacklist the firm', he said. Mr Basheer said Mr Gadkari was seriously concerned that the completed part of the NH-66 had collapsed. He said the Minister had ordered an inquiry into the suspected oversight lapses and promised swift action against the errant officials, including NHAI officials, Central government engineers and their inspection teams. Mr. Basheer also informed Mr Gadkari of the appearance of cracks, possibly due to sinkage, on the elevated stretches of the NH-66 passing through Kozhikode and Kasaragod. The Minister promised a sweeping structural safety audit. He termed Mr Gadkari's approach to the problem 'constructive and proactive on-the-spot action.' Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary Binoy Viswam blamed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHAI) for incorrectly laying the alignment of the NH-66 over paddy fields and wetlands, thereby choking streams, disrupting the natural flow of water, triggering waterlogging and flooding during the monsoon, and causing unquantifiable environmental damage. He stated that the NHAI had disregarded the concerns raised by the local population and environmentalists regarding the ecological impact of the 'ill-planned' NH construction. He demanded that the Central and State governments hold the contractor and NHAI authorities legally responsible for the shoddy construction work. Meanwhile, protests erupted in Chavakkad, Thrissur district, after a social media post showing cracks on the newly constructed National Highway stretch went viral. People blocked the road, accusing the NHAI of doing a cosmetic job to cover up the shoddy construction. Similar protests erupted at Thaliparambu in Kannur district after sodden mud from the NH construction site, unsettled by the heavy rains, deluged adjacent houses and hobbled pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Meanwhile, Youth Congress workers protested outside the construction company's office in Malappuram. They demanded that the NHAI examine the structural safety of an estimated 77 km of the NH-66, which the firm completed. The police later arrested and removed the protestors.
