Gadkari has promised swift action against those responsible for NH-66 collapse near Kooriyad bridge: IUML leader

The Hindu22-05-2025

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MP, E. T. Mohammed Basheerhas said that Union Minister for Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has formed a high-level committee of experts drawn from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to study the structural defects and allied public safety risk along the stretch of the under-construction National Highway-66 stretch in Malappuram district.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Basheer said he had called on Mr Gadkari to apprise him of the grave public concern following the collapse of a significant portion of the NH-66 near the Kooriyad Bridge.
Mr Basheer said that Mr. Gadkari stated the Union government would bring the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials and the construction firm they contracted to construct the six-lane highway to book.
Mr. Basheer said Mr. Gadkari had withdrawn the bank guarantee for the construction company, an Andhra Pradesh-based firm. 'Mr Gadkari said he would also disqualify the contractor from bidding on any future national highway-related construction works and blacklist the firm', he said.
Mr Basheer said Mr Gadkari was seriously concerned that the completed part of the NH-66 had collapsed. He said the Minister had ordered an inquiry into the suspected oversight lapses and promised swift action against the errant officials, including NHAI officials, Central government engineers and their inspection teams.
Mr. Basheer also informed Mr Gadkari of the appearance of cracks, possibly due to sinkage, on the elevated stretches of the NH-66 passing through Kozhikode and Kasaragod. The Minister promised a sweeping structural safety audit. He termed Mr Gadkari's approach to the problem 'constructive and proactive on-the-spot action.'
Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary Binoy Viswam blamed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHAI) for incorrectly laying the alignment of the NH-66 over paddy fields and wetlands, thereby choking streams, disrupting the natural flow of water, triggering waterlogging and flooding during the monsoon, and causing unquantifiable environmental damage.
He stated that the NHAI had disregarded the concerns raised by the local population and environmentalists regarding the ecological impact of the 'ill-planned' NH construction.
He demanded that the Central and State governments hold the contractor and NHAI authorities legally responsible for the shoddy construction work.
Meanwhile, protests erupted in Chavakkad, Thrissur district, after a social media post showing cracks on the newly constructed National Highway stretch went viral. People blocked the road, accusing the NHAI of doing a cosmetic job to cover up the shoddy construction.
Similar protests erupted at Thaliparambu in Kannur district after sodden mud from the NH construction site, unsettled by the heavy rains, deluged adjacent houses and hobbled pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
Meanwhile, Youth Congress workers protested outside the construction company's office in Malappuram. They demanded that the NHAI examine the structural safety of an estimated 77 km of the NH-66, which the firm completed. The police later arrested and removed the protestors.

Punjab: Veteran leader Dhindsa wanted a united Akali Dal, says Sukhbir

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday said veteran leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who passed away on May 28 following age-related issues, had asked him to bring all the leaders of the regional party and 'panth' together. At the 'antim ardas' ceremony in Sangrur, he said, 'Just two days before passing away, Sukhdev Dhindsa had told him to gather the leadership and panth to serve the people. The message highlights the importance of a united leadership for the community's future.' On the occasion, leaders cutting across party lines gathered to pay their last respects. Sukhbir said today's leadership should learn from the determination and resilience shown by veterans, including Dhindsa. Terming veteran Dhindsa's son Parminder Dhindsa as his younger brother, he recalled his tenure as the state finance minister during the SAD tenure. Meanwhile, Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar said the Akali factions should unite by setting aside their differences. 'A strong panthic party is required not only for the state but also for the nation. It will be a true tribute to Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa,' he said. 'It must also be kept in mind that due to internal differences, Punjab's great heritage should not be usurped by others, lest the panth, the community and Punjab have to bear the consequences,' he stated. Chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann sent a condolence message to Dhindsa's family, hailing the veteran leader's role in promoting sports while being the Union sports minister. Besides, leader of Opposition in state assembly Partap Singh Bajwa, Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, BJP leader Tarun Chugh, former deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha Charanjit Singh Atwal, Simranjit Singh Maan, Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri, former Akal Takht jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, SAD leader Prem Singh Chandumajra, Punjab cabinet minister Aman Arora, MP Gurjeet Aujla and others were present. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who breathed his last in a private hospital in Mohali on May 28 evening after a prolonged illness, was a Rajya Sabha MP from 1998 to 2004 and from 2010 to 2022. He became SAD's Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur in 2004. He was the Union minister of sports, chemicals and fertilisers in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Notably, Dhindsa had in 2018 resigned from the SAD, alleging that the old leaders were being sidelined. In May 2021, Dhindsa and Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, also expelled from the SAD, floated a new outfit, Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) which contested the 2022 assembly polls in alliance with the BJP. Before the Lok Sabha elections, Dhindsa merged the party with Sukhbir Badal-led SAD in March 2024. In August 2024, the SAD again expelled Dhindsa from the primary membership for allegedly indulging in 'anti-party' activities.

Israeli Forces Intercept Gaza-Bound Aid Ship Carrying Activist Greta Thunberg, Redirect It

Last Updated: Later, Israeli authorities confirmed that the boat had been diverted to Israeli territory. Israeli forces on Monday intercepted a humanitarian aid vessel bound for Gaza that included Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg among its passengers, according to the ship's organisers. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition announced via Telegram that contact had been lost with the vessel Madleen, stating, 'Connection has been lost on the 'Madleen'. Israeli army have boarded the vessel," AFP reported. Mahmud Abu-Odeh, a Germany-based press officer with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, told AFP that 'the activists seemed to be arrested." The crew was arrested in international waters. — Rima Hassan (@RimaHas) June 9, 2025 Israel had previously vowed to prevent the vessel from reaching Gaza. As the boat approached what authorities called a 'restricted area," the Israeli Navy instructed it to change course. About an hour later, Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the vessel was being towed to Israeli shores. 'The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are expected to return to their home countries," the ministry wrote on social media. In a follow-up post, the ministry added, 'The tiny amount of aid that was on the yacht and not consumed by the 'celebrities' will be transferred to Gaza through real humanitarian channels." Delhi: Dwarka Expressway-Vasant Kunj tunnel approved; full details of mega project

Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday that multiple projects worth ₹24,000 crores have been approved by the centre to reduce pollution and streamline traffic in Delhi and its adjoining areas. This will include a five-km tunnel between Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) and Nelson Mandela Road (Vasant Kunj). The projects, which were approved during a recent meeting with Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, will commence from early next year. The tunnel between Dwarka Expressway and Vasant Kunj will be constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore. The project will include the construction of two underground tubes, with each tube having three lanes, which will offer a signal-free alternate route between South Delhi and Dwarka/Gurugram. Moreover, the tunnel will be equipped with facilities like ventilation, fire safety, CCTV, electro-mechanical systems, surveillance, control rooms, cross passages and emergency exits for efficient travelling. She explained that the tunnel will help in easing traffic congestion on Rangpuri, Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and National Highway 48 (NH-48). The tunnel will also become significant in connecting multiple major expressways including the Delhi Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48), and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (NH-709B) via the Urban Extension Road (UER) and Dwarka Expressway, she added. CM Rekha Gupta called this project, the "foundation for the Delhi of the future," and said the tunnel will give a new direction to infrastructure in the national capital and bring relief to millions of citizens. Last week, CM Rekha Gupta said that the central government has given various road projects worth Rs.1.25 lakh crore to Delhi over the last years due to which key connectivity stretches are in the works, including an underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road and an elevated corridor from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport.
