Mcgaw to launch spring carnival assault in Group 3 McNeil Stakes at Caulfield on August 30 after temperature hiccup for trainers Emma-Lee and David Browne

Husband-and-wife training partners Emma-Lee and David Browne will now unleash Melbourne Spring Carnival challengers Mcgaw and Cup-qualified Basilinna at Caulfield at the end of the month. Mcgaw was set to resume in the Group 3 Vain Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday but a minor temperature spike derailed the Brownes' plans. The three-year-old gelding, undefeated in two starts including the $1m Showdown, has been reset towards the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 30. 'He was just a little bit dull (Friday) afternoon,' Emma-Lee Browne said. 'We checked (his temperature), it's pretty minor but we didn't want to flatten him first-up. 'It was very minor but just enough.' Mcgaw is set to gallop at Caulfield in two weeks to sharpen up for the McNeil Stakes. 'We'll probably bring him here … use that and probably go straight into the McNeil,' Emma-Lee said. 'The trip away is almost like a jumpout for him, he works himself pretty hard.' Mcgaw has impressed in both starts, winning his maiden easily at Pakenham before claiming the $1 million VOBIS Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield back in March. Mcgaw remains unbeaten with a dashing display in the VOBIS Platinum Showdown ðŸ† The gelding sustained a mid-race move under @LaneDamian & held on for @Em_spartaracing & connections. — (@Racing) March 15, 2025 'We've been really, really, really happy with him,' Emma-Lee said. 'He's developing into a lovely strong horse. 'He's a naturally fast horse and he's still learning how to harness his speed. The Brownes' two stable stars Basilinna and Statuario are both not far off their returns with some big targets in the months ahead. 'We're holding all of our balloons at the moment, hoping none of them are going to pop,' Emma-Lee said. 'It's good and the horses are coming along nicely.' Basilinna holds ballot exemption in the Melbourne Cup after the five-year-old daughter of underrated Kiwi-based staying stallion Staphanos (JPN) won the Listed Andrew Ramsden at Flemington back in May. 'The plan is for her to resume at the end of the month in a 2000 metre open handicap at Caulfield on Memsie Stakes Day,' Browne said. 'She's an out and out stayer, that doesn't like being bustled early so the longer distance races keep her happy. 'She's coming up really well and we're excited about what's ahead.' Basilinna is rated a $34 chance in the Melbourne Cup. 'We've got a few options (to get there)' Emma-Lee said. 'We'll get through the first race but we programmed what we could fit in, with maybe the Cup being fifth-up because that seems to be when she's gone very, very well. 'It's a nice position to be in (Cup qualified) but it's still slightly nerve racking.' Group 1 -placed Statuario will resume at The Valley on September 6. • Maher colt comes out on top in Vain battle Statuario surprised his trainers when looking 'really sharp' and holding off the highly-regarded Deakin to lead throughout in a recent 1200m Pakenham jumpout in which Basilinna placed third. 'He's going super and we're a bit excited about him looking to the future,' Emma-Lee said. 'The couple of trips away last prep have brought him on mentally. 'We're planning to kick him off in the So You Think Stakes at Moonee Valley. 'Everything is on the table for him in the spring, we'll be guided by how he performs in open company.'

Qualified runner Basilinna starts build up to 2025 Melbourne Cup

Knight's Choice and Prince Of Penzance showed Pakenham trainer Emma-Lee Browne that anything is possible in a Melbourne Cup. Shock wins have bobbed up throughout Melbourne Cup history with Prince Of Penzance and Knight's Choice stunning the racing world in recent history. 'I think often a story like that comes up through the Melbourne Cup and we've seen it a few times before with Prince Of Penzance and all those types,' Browne, who trains Basilinna in partnership with her husband David, said. 'Anything can happen can't it?' Basilinna is a $67 chance in early Melbourne Cup betting but she has a crucial advantage over many of her higher-rated rivals. She has a guaranteed spot in the Melbourne Cup field, should she make it to the first Tuesday in November, courtesy of her win in the Listed Andrew Ramsden at Flemington in the autumn. Basilinna went to the spelling paddock after that win for a break but has returned to the Brownes' Pakenham stable to begin the road to the Melbourne Cup. 'We're in quite a good position already having that guaranteed spot but she's back in now and she did super well in her spell,' Emma-Lee Browne said. 'She went out a very happy horse and they always do well when they go out happy.' Browne said Basilinna was likely to take the proven weight-for-age path to the $8m event but that would entail racing over shorter distances early in her campaign. She said the camp had not picked a first-up assignment for the rising five-year-old but the aim was to keep Basilinna happy during the long preparation. 'Last prep, she thrived through the whole thing so hopefully that will repeat it,' Browne said. 'We'll probably start her off a bit shorter this time. 'We started her off straight up at 2000m last time in but we'll start her in shorter races, just trying to keep her happy and hitting the line. 'They will probably be a bit short for her but she's probably at that level now where weight-for-age races will probably provide the path.' However, the Brownes have no control over their biggest wish for Melbourne Cup Day. 'The wet track really helped her as she does seem to find another gear on those wet tracks,' she said. 'We'll be hoping it rains in November.'

Basilinna books Melbourne Cup date with Andrew Ramsden victory

Emma-lee and David Browne could be the only ones praying for a wet Melbourne Cup after bonny mare Basilinna on Saturday qualified for the race that stops a nation. Basilinna, who placed third in the 2023 VRC Oaks, relished the soft track at Flemington to claim the Melbourne Cup -qualifying Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m) from Glentaneous and Fernao. Favourites Berkshire Breeze and Athabascan finished midfield. 'I'm a little bit overwhelmed actually, a horse that means a lot to me, I can't believe she did it,' Emma-lee Browne said. 'When the rain came we were pretty confident but I thought 'she's a proper princess, might be too much rain', but she did it so well. 'To think, now we just wrap her in cotton wool and we're back here in November … it's massive for our whole stable, we've got a tiny stable and I can't believe it.' Basilinna travelled sweetly, just worse than midfield under jockey Dean Yendall, and emerged at the top of the straight as a major contender once past Berkshire Breeze at the 350m. 'Right from the start I thought she's handling this track great,' Browne said. 'I think I'll be the only one wanting rain in November, it's a little overwhelming actually.' See you in the Melbourne Cup! ðŸ† Basilinna heads straight to a Melbourne Cup after winning the Andrew Ramsden! @Em_spartaracing â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) May 17, 2025 The husband and wife Pakenham-based team, who moved from New Zealand in 2021, have enjoyed a stellar season, including success in the $1m The Showdown with smart two-year-old McGaw. Statuario won the Listed Galilee Series Final and ran second in the Group 1 South Australian Derby. 'We've had a great season but this (Melbourne Cup entry) has really topped it off,' Browne said. David Browne bought Basilinna's dam, Shinko King mare So Royal, for Emma-lee after she lost her favourite horse, Monarch Chimes, a son of the Japanese stallion. 'I laughed (at the time), I said you can't replace him (Monarch Chimes) but I think he's done a pretty good job,' Browne said. Basilinna was added into pre-nominations Melbourne Cup markets as a $51 chance. Yendall appreciated the opportunity to qualify Basilinna for the Browne team and connections. 'To get this horse into a big race is a great thrill for them and also for myself to secure another ride if it's there, she's been knocking on the door a while this mare,' Yendall said. 'Found some hard races there, probably unsuitable tracks for her, but relishes the soft ground. 'She had a great run in transit from the wide barrier, back to the fence, followed the field, niggled out (wide) when I needed to get out and found the line really easily.' Basilinna is the 16th mare to win the Andrew Ramsden and fifth in the past six years including three on the bounce to secure Melbourne Cup ballot exception through the winter Flemington feature.

Sir Kingsford produces gutsy effort to win Port Adelaide Cup

It was heart in mouth viewing, but a lion-hearted Sir Kingsford staved off Victorian raider Basilinna to win Saturday's Port Adelaide Cup at Morphettville. Piloting the field in his first attempt at 2500m, Sir Kingsford refused to lay down in a toe-to-toe battle with Basilinna, after the mare threw down the gauntlet at the top of the straight. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. To our team at home, well done,' Searle said post-race. 'You've all worked hard. Gary and Brianna, and to the owners of this horse, it's been a long journey. 'We trained his mum, we lost her, unfortunately, last year. We were really looking forward to the filly that she was carrying but this is a tough horse. 'He's just a really nice horse and probably has taken over the mantle from Lady Silhouette as the best horse we've had.' Sir Kingsford won by a length, guided by a brilliant frontrunning ride from Teagan Voorham, it secured a second Port Adelaide Cup win for Voorham, who saluted aboard Hasta La War in 2023. Voorham admitted that she thought Basilinna, ridden by Lachlan Neindorf, would overhaul them, but Sir Kingsford kept on fighting. 'I personally was worried. I thought when Lachie got to me, he's going to go straight past me,' Voorham said. 'But this horse, he's unreal. He hears another horse and he just digs harder and harder every time. 'Every time I thought Lachie was going past me, Sir Kingsford, 'Billy' as we call him – he just said absolutely not.' Picture: Makoto Kaneko Gun filly On Display, trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr, charged home for an electric win in the Adelaide Guineas (1600m). Ridden by Ben Melham, the filly peeled to the outside at the 400m, letting go with a blistering turn of foot to defy local hope Stirrup Cup. The result helped connections put a luckless last start run with the filly behind them. 'It's a nice consolation, we've always liked this filly,' Kent Jr said. 'Expensive purchase, gorgeous type, (she's) always had a big sprint on her.' Felicity Atkinson steered Voltage Point to an impressive first up win for trainer Chris Bieg, the apprentice hoop is riding in career-best form. The result kicked off an early double for Bieg, who later found success with Annihilate in the Autumn Series Final (1600m). Trainer Stephen Theodore trusted his horse Fine Future to get the money on Saturday, and that confidence was well founded, the Japanese gelding stormed away to win under Jamie Melham in the David Thomas Memorial Provincial Pathways Final. It was an emotional victory for Theodore, who spoke of his friendship with the late Thomas, who was a well-respected and loved figure in South Australian racing. Read related topics: Adelaide
