On the other hand, next quarter's revenue guidance of $1.54 billion was less impressive, coming in 1.6% below analysts' estimates. Spun off from L Brands in 2020, Bath & Body Works (NYSE:BBWI) is a personal care and home fragrance retailer where consumers can find specialty shower gels, scented candles for the home, and lotions. A company's long-term sales performance is one signal of its overall quality. Even a bad business can shine for one or two quarters, but a top-tier one grows for years. With $7.35 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, Bath and Body Works is a mid-sized retailer, which sometimes brings disadvantages compared to larger competitors benefiting from better economies of scale. As you can see below, Bath and Body Works's sales grew at a tepid 6.7% compounded annual growth rate over the last six years (we compare to 2019 to normalize for COVID-19 impacts). This quarter, Bath and Body Works grew its revenue by 2.9% year on year, and its $1.42 billion of revenue was in line with Wall Street's estimates. Company management is currently guiding for a 1% year-on-year increase in sales next quarter. Looking further ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 2.3% over the next 12 months, a deceleration versus the last six years. This projection is underwhelming and indicates its products will face some demand challenges. Bath and Body Works sported 2,424 locations in the latest quarter. Over the last two years, it has opened new stores at a rapid clip by averaging 4.5% annual growth, among the fastest in the consumer retail sector. This gives it a chance to become a large, scaled business over time. When a retailer opens new stores, it usually means it's investing for growth because demand is greater than supply, especially in areas where consumers may not have a store within reasonable driving distance. The change in a company's store base only tells one side of the story. The other is the performance of its existing locations and e-commerce sales, which informs management teams whether they should expand or downsize their physical footprints. Same-store sales gives us insight into this topic because it measures organic growth for a retailer's e-commerce platform and brick-and-mortar shops that have existed for at least a year. Bath and Body Works's demand has been shrinking over the last two years as its same-store sales have averaged 3.3% annual declines. This performance is concerning - it shows Bath and Body Works artificially boosts its revenue by building new stores. We'd like to see a company's same-store sales rise before it takes on the costly, capital-intensive endeavor of expanding its store base. Note that Bath and Body Works reports its same-store sales intermittently, so some data points are missing in the chart below. We enjoyed seeing Bath and Body Works beat analysts' gross margin and EBITDA expectations this quarter. On the other hand, its revenue guidance for next quarter missed and its full-year EPS guidance fell short of Wall Street's estimates. Overall, this quarter could have been better. The stock remained flat at $30.56 immediately after reporting. The latest quarter from Bath and Body Works's wasn't that good. One earnings report doesn't define a company's quality, though, so let's explore whether the stock is a buy at the current price. The latest quarter does matter, but not nearly as much as longer-term fundamentals and valuation, when deciding if the stock is a buy. Major retailer to triple store size at Bluewater shopping centre
A large retailer is set to triple its presence in a major shopping centre. Bluewater has announced that Next will expand its store size in the Kent-based shopping centre, making it one of the largest in the UK. The new store is set to open in 2026. The store will feature a range of new products, including men's, women's, and children's clothing, homeware, and a café. The American-based global beauty brand, Bath and Body Works, will also be relocated into a 2,000 sq ft neighbouring store. The current 44,600 sq ft NEXT store will be replaced by a 133,000 sq ft store, which was previously occupied by House of Fraser. The current NEXT and Bath and Body Works stores will continue to trade normally throughout 2025. James Waugh, centre director at Bluewater, said: "We're thrilled to see NEXT significantly expanding its presence here at Bluewater, following many successful years in its current space. "This move not only reinforces Bluewater's position as a leading retail destination but also highlights the continued confidence in bricks-and-mortar retail that we're seeing." TUPELO – During the summer, the children of Frederick and Summer Adams spent about an hour every Saturday visiting local barbershops. More Information | More Information | The Candle Shop has expanded its assortment. It also sells body oils, burner oils, waxes, dough bowls, body butters and more. The store is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. They'll also ship: a flat rate of $9.99 takes their scents anywhere. Mom and dad had already been selling candles as a side gig, so the kids decided to give it a try themselves. "They were able to work it up to 17 barbershops," Frederick Adams said. "Then one day, we were walking in the mall, and my daughter said, 'I want something like that, Bath and Body Works.'" But rather than opening a store in the mall, his daughter found a small space in the West Main Shopping Center that looked promising. They even went as far as getting the glass cut for shelving for the candles. "I said we needed to talk about it; who were your employees going to be? At the time she was doing track with the high school and the boys were doing travel baseball," Frederick said. djr-2025-04-19-biz-candle-shop-arp6 The Candle Shop is located in the West Main Shopping Center in Tupelo, Miss. As it turned out, it became a family business, and after eight years, The Candle Shop has expanded its customer base. "It all started out part-time and a bit of a hobby, but now it's our passion and part of our family," Frederick said. "They actually came to our house and taught us how," Frederick said. "That was about four years ago when we started pouring the candles ourselves.' Their candle pouring facility is their garage. All told, the shop has 23 scents and is working to add more. The candles come in 3-ounce and 11-ounce glass jars. "It's a lot of work," Summer said. "We have to heat the wax, and that takes about an hour, then after it gets to a certain temperature, we're able to pour. Then depending on the customer's needs, the scents are what we'll pour." During the pouring process, the wicks are set into the candles. Once that's done, the candles are left to set and dry. "Pouring candles is a lot harder than people think," Frederick said. "There's a lot of precise measurements. She does the measuring, and I do the pouring." djr-2025-04-19-biz-candle-shop-arp3 The Adamses make the candles they sell themselves. "We're usually up until 1 in the morning or later," Summer said. The pouring process now takes about three late nights each week. With the spring and summer festival season, The Candle Shop takes part in as many events as possible to sell their candles. They also set up monthly at the Tupelo Flea Market. Holidays also mean ramping up production: Christmas, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are the busiest. Among all the scents, Kudzu is the most popular. It mimics the sweet, grape-light scent of the real vine. "And kudzu just grows on the side of the road, serving no purpose," Frederick said. "But the candle does." The Adams family would like to expand The Candle Shop into other locations. In some aspects, they have laid the foundation for expansion: The Candle Shop uses a van to service some of the barber shops the children reached out to years ago. "Our daughter is graduating next year with a business degree, so we'd like to look at franchising to other cities,' Frederick said.
