Crews fight fire at market near Battle Creek
PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A large fire broke out at a popular market near Battle Creek Saturday. It happened around 7 p.m. at Bailey Park Thriftway, located at 1391 Capital Ave. NE near Eaton Street. Multiple departments were called to put out the flames and crews remained on site as of around 10:45 p.m. The Bedford Charter Township Fire Department posted photos to its Facebook page of firefighters battling heavy smoke and flames at the market. Calhoun County Dispatch told News 8 that Pennfield Township Fire Department was leading the response. According to its Facebook page, the market has been locally owned for more than 60 years. West Michigan inventions: Synthetic penicillin
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A West Michigan native can be thanked for the creation of synthetic penicillin, which can be used to make more effective antibiotics. John Sheehan was born in Battle Creek on Sept. 23, 1915. According to the , he graduated from Battle Creek College before receiving his master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. West Michigan inventions: Gerber Baby Food During World War II, the U.S. put millions of dollars into recruiting over a thousand scientists in 31 labs to synthesize penicillin. In 1946, Sheehan began a career at MIT and dedicated himself to synthesizing penicillin as all other labs were shifting focus, according to the . 'Nine years later, he proved all the doubters wrong, successfully creating a general total synthesis of penicillin. He created both a total synthesis as well as an intermediate compound which became the foundation of hundreds of additional kinds of synthetic penicillin,' the historical society's website said. West Michigan inventions: Cat litter When he ended his career, he had over 30 patents. Battle Creek cemetery closed for months due to storm damage
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — During Memorial Day weekend and beyond, a Battle Creek cemetery is closed due to storm damage from last week. Oak Hill Cemetery experienced 'extensive damage' during , according to a social media post by the cemetery. It will be closed for up to 2.5 months to clean up the damage. NWS confirms 2 tornadoes touched down near Battle Creek A sign that read 'Closed due to weather damage' was posted on the front gate Sunday. Each year, tourists worldwide visit the cemetery to see the final resting places of several historical figures like W. K. Kellogg, John Harvey Kellogg , C.W. Post and Sojourner Truth. NWS confirms 2 tornadoes in Allegan County on Thursday
ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. (WOOD) — The National Weather Service has confirmed two additional tornadoes touched down in West Michigan during Thursday night's storms. The NWS confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Allegan County touched down at 10:28 p.m. Thursday. It started near Sandy Pines campground in Hopkins and intensified on the south side of Dorr, around the intersection of 138th Avenue and 24th Street. It had 90 mph winds and lasted for five minutes, according to the NWS. The majority of the damage were trees that had been uprooted and snapped. Extensive damage and high winds also happened in the area of Hilltop View Drive and 21st Street. A second tornado developed around the intersection of 114th Avenue and 16th Street and moved directly into Martin on Thursday night at 10:41 p.m. A power pole was pushed over and the tornado continued to develop as it went through Schnable Lake before damaging the nearby campgrounds, where several trailers were flipped, according to the NWS. The worst damage was near the intersection of 116th Ave and US-131 and into downtown Martin, before the storm weakened on its way east before finally dissolving near the county line between Allegan and Barry. 150,000 Michigan customers still without power after storms
After two days of storms, nearly 150,000 Michigan energy customers remain without power as of 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17. Most of the outages are in southwest Michigan, according to an outage map by Two tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down the region. Both tornadoes were EF-0, the lowest rating a tornado can receive. The first was near St. Marys Lake, north of Battle Creek and east of the Bedford area. The second was near Galesburg and Battle Creek with peak winds reaching 80 mph. Nearly 31% of of the 41,000 customers in Kalamazoo County are without power as of 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17. In Calhoun County, about 17,000 customers, 27%, are out of power. Consumers Energy hopes to restore power by Saturday evening, according to its website. People in 'hardest-hit areas,' including Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and Muskegon 'should have power back by Sunday evening,' the utility company said. DTE Energy reported 99.95% of its customers had power Saturday morning. More: Consumers Energy says some power will be out for days. 2 tornadoes confirmed in Michigan Detroit saw gusts of up to 41 mph Friday night. High winds are expected to continue into Saturday. Grand Rapids saw wind gusts reaching 48 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Friday night's storms followed hurricane-force winds that gusted Thursday night into Friday morning and left more than 259,000 electric customers without power. The National Weather Service predicts the rest of the weekend will be calmer and cooler with wind gusts of up to 30-35 mph Saturday and below average temperatures into next week.
