Universal's new theme park is absolutely incredible — but it's also got some big flaws
As a theme-park fanatic, I love Universal's new Epic Universe in Orlando and have visited 3 times. It's my new favorite theme park, but it didn't feel designed with Florida's climate in mind. It doesn't have many indoor or shaded areas, and most of its rides are vulnerable to rain. I've lived in Orlando, the "Theme Park Capital of the World," for over 25 years. In that time, I've already gone on thousands of visits to the area's attractions, from Disney World to Universal Orlando. So, I was pumped when Universal debuted Epic Universe, Florida's first new theme park in years. Even though it opened on May 22, I've already been three times, since I was able to get several early-preview tickets as a Universal annual pass holder. I've visited dozens of theme parks around the world, and Epic Universe has the most innovative, high-quality attractions I've ever seen. From immersive experiences and design to delicious food, Epic has pretty much everything I look for in a park. However, there's it severely lacks indoor attractions and shaded areas. And in Florida, that can be a huge problem. The park's current setup means one storm could ruin an entire visit Orlando experiences a lot of rain, especially during summer months and hurricane season. This also tends to be the most popular time of year for people to visit its theme parks. Unfortunately, all but four of Epic Universe's 11 attractions are in outdoor, uncovered locations. With so few indoor options, inclement weather could really wreak havoc on the park. People are already waiting over three hours to get on one of the park's few indoor rides, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, during fair weather. If it's also one of the few rides that can stay open on a rainy day, the wait time may only get worse. Epic Universe also has amazing interactive experiences throughout its parks, and unlike rides, they require little to no wait. My family loved casting spells at magical windows within its Wizarding World of Harry Potter and using special bands to compete in larger-than-life video-game components found throughout Super Nintendo World. However, these elements are nearly all located outdoors and would also be unpleasant to complete during a downpour. Epic Universe's lack of indoor rides means it can't quite compete with neighbors like Universal Studios and Disney's Magic Kingdom, which offer about a dozen options to enjoy in any weather. When it rains during our visits to those parks, we visit one of their many indoor attractions that range from family-friendly Minions-themed simulators to thrill rides like Space Mountain. At Epic, we were left scrambling to find cover or waiting in line for hours for one of our very limited options. A lack of shade combined with Orlando's tropical climate can make for a steamy visit Many of Epic Universe's shows and dining venues are indoors, which provides some relief on rainy and sweltering days, but I'm not sure that's enough. Even on a cloudless afternoon, Florida's heat can make competing for coins Mario-style or waiting in some outdoor queues feel practically unbearable. Although the park is overflowing with scenic gardens, it lacks mature trees to shield those walking through from the sun. Without covered awnings, fans, misters, and air-conditioned places to rest, the park feels like a scorcher on a sunny day. Unfortunately, it's also not possible to beat the heat by visiting Epic Universe after sunset. The posted park hours through the end of July show it closing at 9 p.m., not long after the sun sets. I'm hopeful the new park will keep getting better All that said, Epic Universe has only been officially open for a few weeks. Despite these flaws, I'm still impressed and believe it has the potential to be the best theme park in Orlando. However, I think there's room for improvement and wish it were better set up to thrive in Florida's extreme weather, from afternoons with blazing sun to mornings with rainstorms. In order for the park to truly be Epic, it needs more options that can be enjoyed come rain or shine — and maybe even hours and activities that can take us into the night.

Epic Universe opens, and Harry Potter ride quickly draws a crowd (and a 300-minute wait)
The theme park capital of the world just got bigger as Epic Universe officially opened to the public at Universal Orlando early today. Its first visitors passed through the entrance at 6:30 a.m. — some eager customers had circled the area since 2 a.m. Eventually, there was a boisterous group countdown, followed by cheers, tears, cosplay and livestreaming. Initial Epic-goers went into speed-walking mode before literally skipping through the park's signature Chronos portal into Orlando's eighth theme park. Within 30 minutes, all visitors who had queued up early had ventured into the park. 'It was fun coming in because they had all the team members lining either side of the Chronos [entrance] clapping and welcoming everybody,' said Molly McCormack of Orlando, who arrived in the Epic parking lot at 7:30 a.m. 'We walked straight through security, straight through to Chronos,' said McCormack, co-owner of Mammoth Club, a content company that specializes in theme parks and travel. 'There's excitement in the air. Just now in the bar, people are toasting and cheers at each other,' she said. Fast-track tech helps Universal mold new Epic Universe experiences The opening ceremony also included mini-presentations and musical moments at the portals to the other four lands and the declaration that Epic Universe is officially open. The themed areas of Epic include Super Nintendo World, Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk and Dark Universe, which showcases the classic monsters of Universal Studios. Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, one of the more ballyhooed rides during previews for Epic Universe, quickly had a 300-minute wait time. The app later indicated operation of the attraction was 'delayed.' Most other attractions had midmorning waits of less than 30 minutes. By midday Thursday, major rides such as the Stardust Racers roller coaster and Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment showed waits of 15 minutes or less. The bulging Battle at the Ministry wait time might explain the morning congestion at the Wizarding World portal. 'There was some running that happened,' a theme park no-no, said Tim Tracker, an Orlando-based YouTuber who covers Central Florida attractions. He said folks were dashing for the Potter ride, but there was no sign of trampling or injuries. The park didn't feel crowded Thursday morning, he said. 'It feels very similar to the preview days,' Tracker said. 'When you're out in Celestial Park, there's not a lot of people walking around. … And it's been lovely.' Overall, the short lines sharply contrasted with the first day of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal's Islands of Adventure theme park in 2010. Some anxious fans waited eight hours then to get close to Hogwarts Castle. There has been a more measured approach in 2025. Ticket sales for the day were limited and quickly became unavailable, so there were no walk-up buyers for Epic on Thursday. The new park has also had several weeks of previews, starting with Universal employees and eventually expanding to the general public. Andrew and Sandra Spicer, a couple from the United Kingdom who took a nearly nine-hour flight to Florida, said they had planned their trip for a year and previously came during previews. 'It was the Harry Potter ride that we most wanted to go on when we came,' Sandra said. 'We queued for three-and-a-half hours to get on it.' She hoped lines would be shorter and said that they would definitely not wait for that amount of time again. She also came during the preview and rode all rides except for Battle at the Ministry and Donkey Kong Mine-Cart Madness, a roller coaster in Super Nintendo World. They were not operating during that visit. 'I'm gonna do Mine-Cart first, and then I'm hoping it eases off a little bit [at Harry Potter] because I think everyone will be around there first thing in the morning, Ireland said. 'So I'm hoping by the time I get there it might be less full.' Tharin White, lead producer for agreed that the park was well below its capacity and that might have been Universal's plan. 'I am seeing less people here now than I saw on any of my annual passholder technical previews. … I would guess that the park is at 50% [capacity}, if not less,' White said. He said he had been on both Super Nintendo World rides in less than an hour. 'And I met Toad and I met Donkey Kong at that time,' White said. Orlando's theme parks do not share attendance figures. While it was relatively smooth sailing inside Epic, the outside world made itself known. A plane toted a sign over the park that read 'Gaza is starving – end genocide' Thursday morning. Back on the ground, some visitors complained that a commemorative coin for opening day was already sold out. Other people stood in line to purchase an LP by Danny Elfman, who created music for Dark Universe. 'I'm excited to see the look on people's faces when they look at all of the work that people have done,' Patrick Braillard, senior show writer for the theme park, said during a preview during the buildup to Epic's debut. With a grand opening comes great expectations in Central Florida. 'We have so many theme parks in Orlando and guests have so much expectation,' Braillard said. The expansion also includes three hotels near the new park, including Helios Grand Hotel, which has a direct Epic entrance. Universal now has 11 on-property hotels with 11,000 rooms. I visited Universal's new theme park, Epic Universe. I see why some people wouldn't like it, but I'd happily go back.
I visited Epic Universe, Universal's newest Orlando theme park with five immersive worlds. The park only has 11 rides, but this felt like enough for me, and I enjoyed the ones I went on. Overall, the immersiveness and theming of the worlds blew me away and made my ticket a great value. Universal has officially added another theme park to its Orlando repertoire — and it may be one of its best yet. Epic Universe officially opened to the public on Thursday, and it's the first major theme park to debut in Orlando in over 20 years. It was first officially announced in 2015 and is located a few miles away from Universal's other Florida parks: Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay. I've been impressed by Universal's other parks for years and even used to be a season passholder, so I was thrilled to see Epic Universe for myself. I visited the weekend before the park's official opening date and paid $164 for a preview ticket. It came with the caveat that some experiences would not be available since the park was still putting the final touches in place before its grand opening. Here's what my experience was like. Epic Universe consists of five themed worlds. Epic Universe has five themed worlds: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic, Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk, Dark Universe, and Celestial Park. Since they're all part of Epic Universe and only spread across about 110 acres, they're generally within walking distance from each other. The themed areas feel more impressive than the rides at Epic Universe. With the massive sculptures and design details, I really felt like I was being transported into each world I visited, which was the highlight of the trip for me. The park also has 11 rides, and I rode at least one in each world. For comparison, Universal Orlando is a bit smaller and has more than double that number of rides. When I visited during previews, only the Curse of the Werewolf (Dark Universe) and Mine-Cart Madness (Super Nintendo World) rides were closed. In terms of worlds, I was most excited to explore the one from the Harry Potter universe. When I first entered the Harry Potter world, I felt immersed in 1920s France. The world is inspired by Place Cachée, which is shown in the franchise's " Fantastic Beasts" movies. There were magical statues, signs, and pretty pastel buildings everywhere I looked. While exploring the world, I even tried the series' famous Butterbeer — my first ever — for $10. It lived up to the hype and was a refreshing drink on a 90-degree day. Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry was my most anticipated ride. I'm a huge Harry Potter fan who grew up reading the books and watching the movies, so I was most excited about the Battle at the Ministry ride. In order to get to the screen-based ride, guests go through a "Floo" (a magical transportation system in the wizarding world) station from 1920s France to contemporary London. Once there, I got into one of the most visually stimulating queues I've ever seen. I felt like I'd been transported into the Ministry of Magic from the Harry Potter movies. Unfortunately, the single-rider line I was in bypassed several of the themed areas of the queue. The parts I did see were spectacular, though. All in all, I waited in line for three hours. The ride itself was exciting and filled with recognizable characters. It felt like a great nod to the Harry Potter world, but I wouldn't wait so long to ride it again unless I could be more fully immersed in the queue. Super Nintendo World felt nostalgic. There are several themed Super Nintendo World areas throughout the world, but this is the first one in Florida. It felt incredibly immersive and nostalgic, with giant character statues and item replicas from popular games I used to play as a kid. While here, I rode Yoshi's Adventure, a slow-moving train ride, and Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge. The latter was my favorite because I got to walk through an impressively themed Bowser's Castle before being transported into my own real-life racing game. Isle of Berk was a pleasant surprise. The Isle of Berk world is based on the "How to Train Your Dragon" movies, which I haven't seen in years. I remember almost nothing about the franchise, so I wasn't particularly excited to visit the world, but I'm so glad I went. While here, I tried the mac-and-cheese cone from Hooligan's Grog and Gruel. I got pork, bacon, and jam mac and cheese inside a garlic-bread cone, which was really tasty. That and a bottle of water cost around $23. Later in the day, I came back and rode Dragon Racer's Rally. It didn't look like much and was a pretty short ride, but it was fun to control my "dragon." I like that riders could use handles to make the experience as intense or relaxing as they want. I didn't have time for the other rides in this land — Fyre Drill (an interactive boat ride) and Hiccup's Wing Gliders (a family-friendly coaster). Celestial Park was beautiful, and I loved its coaster. Themed after stars and constellations, Celestial Park has a lot of fun decorations and statues. Its standout ride is definitely Stardust Racers. It's the biggest roller coaster in Epic, and it was a fun, fast-paced thrill ride I'd go on again. The other ride in this world is Constellation Carousel, but I didn't have time for it. It seemed to be a typical carousel, and it looked beautiful with its vibrant colors and starry patterns. I enjoyed Dark Universe more than I thought I would. Dark Universe's theme is all about classic monsters and creatures, from vampires to Frankenstein. I don't usually gravitate toward spooky things, so I wasn't sure how much I'd like it. However, I enjoyed Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, a dark ride into the world of Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolf Man, and other iconic creatures. Later in the afternoon, I headed to Das Stakehaus, one of this world's quick-service eateries, for lunch. I got a "blood" orange chicken sandwich complete with a black bun and a slice of red velvet cake shaped like a coffin. It cost around $27. The meal was satisfying, and I enjoyed sitting inside the chilled vampire-themed restaurant to get a break from the heat. In total, I spent about $60 on food and drinks. Everything I ate and drank at Epic Universe was good and cost typical slightly-high-theme-park prices. Although I didn't order very much throughout the day, I still spent $60 on food and a drink for one person. My favorite buy was the $10 Butterbeer, and I will definitely get it next time I visit one of the parks. All in all, I recommend visiting Epic Universe. I was at Epic Universe from the time it opened at 9 a.m. until around 6 p.m. My ticket seemed like a solid value, plus it'd cost me about $20 less now that I'm able to use my Florida resident discount. I think the park is especially great for adults looking for an ambient vacation with a little fun sprinkled in. It's probably not ideal for those seeking thrills, and I've seen some people online criticizing the park as not having enough rides. That said, the number of rides didn't disappoint me. I didn't even go on all 11, and I still didn't leave feeling like I needed more. Plus, the rides I did go on were enjoyable. After all, Epic Universe really shines with its world-building and storytelling. If you want to be immersed in stunning lands inspired by pop culture and famous franchises, this park is worth a visit.

Tips for Making the Most of One Day at Universal's New Epic Universe Theme Park
Travel Tips for Making the Most of One Day at Universal's New Epic Universe Theme Park The long-awaited Epic Universe is finally here. The first major theme park to open in the US since Universal launched Islands of Adventure in 1999, the sprawling Universal Epic Universe opens to the public May 22, 2025. A select few of us got a sneak peek at this epic $7 billion wonder. After spending a ride-packed 12 hours in the 750-acre park, I can say that it lives up to the hype. The theming in the queues alone is worth a visit. It's some of the best I've seen at any theme park, ever. Here are my best tips to help you experience all the thrill, dark, and magical rides at Universal Epic Universe. Do you want to travel like a pro? Five Immersive Lands Centered Around the Hub Universal Orlando's Epic Universe theme park features five colorful themed lands and a central hub. You'll step through dazzling LED portals to enter five distinct lands: Celestial Par k – An ethereal, otherworldly hub filled with gardens, fountains, and the park's signature dueling coaster, Stardust Racers. k – An ethereal, otherworldly hub filled with gardens, fountains, and the park's signature dueling coaster, Stardust Racers. SheBuysTravel Tip: There's something for the whole family! Within its intricately themed lands, Epic Universe offers 11 rides that range in intensity from intense roller coasters to family-friendly experiences. Stay at a Universal Hotel for Early Access to the Parks Each of the entrances to Epic Universe's five lands are called "Portals." Here, the Portal to Super Nintendo World. Photo credit: Melissa Heckscher Universal has 11 hotels in Orlando, including three beauties next to Epic Universe that opened this spring. Staying at any of these hotels gets you: Early access to one or more of the parks each day. Check the Universal parks calendar to see which parks open early on the day you plan to visit. Free shuttle transportation to and from the parks -though you can walk to Epic from the Stella Nova and the Helios Grand hotels. -though you can walk to Epic from the Stella Nova and the Helios Grand hotels. Free merchandise delivery to your hotel. Parkwide charging privileges. Of those perks, the most important one (in my roller-coaster-loving opinion) is the one-hour early entry into the park. SheBuysTravel Tip: Not all the rides are open during the early admission hour. During my visit, the only rides open during this hour were Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge, Yoshi's Adventure, Donkey Kong Mine-Cart Madness, and Stardust Racers. Super Nintendo World at Universal's Epic Universe features two lands, Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country (where you'll find the Mine-Cart Madness" coaster). Photo credit: Universal Orlando Resort With that extra hour at Epic Universe, I advise heading straight to Super Nintendo World for ride Mine-Cart Madness. This zippy little coaster was one of my favorite rides in the park-and if the AVERAGE 144-minute wait for the same ride at Universal Studios Japan is any indication, the line will be long (and there's no Express Pass line). Stay at the Helios Grand The Helios Grand hotel has 500 rooms, including How to Train Your Dragon-themed suites for families. Photo credit Melissa Heckscher Sure, $500 a night is no bargain, but if you are up for the splurge, Universal's newest "Signature Collection" hotel is a sprawling lap of luxury that sits so close to Epic Universe that you can hear the screams from its roller coasters wafting in the wind. Not only does it have upscale amenities and a stunning top-floor restaurant with 360-degree views; it also boasts a resort-style pool, multiple dining options, and breathtaking views of the park. It's as close as any hotel gets to a theme park in the US-tied with Disney's Grand Californian in Anaheim, which straddles the border of Disneyland's California Adventure. And being able to step through a doorway and be 'home' while the masses queue up for shuttle buses? Priceless. Book the Harry Potter Ride AS SOON as You Get into Epic Universe The stunning and immersive queue for Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry transports guests from 1920s Paris to the heart of the British Ministry of Magic. Photo credit Melissa Heckscher The Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry ride inside Epic's Wizarding World is a technological marvel from the moment you step into the line. The queue itself is a spectacle unlike anything I've ever seen on a theme park ride. And that's before the ride even starts. The bad news? With state-of-the-art technology comes occasional technical hiccups. During my visit, the ride was closed or "delayed" more often than it was open. I waited in its stunning queue three separate times (honestly, it says a lot that I didn't mind coming back again and again) but never actually made it onto the ride. That said, my visit was during a "technical rehearsal," so hopefully Universal smooths out the kinks soon. Maybe it's time for Harry to cast a little "Expecto Mechanicum!" spell? Opt for the Single Rider Line The Curse of the Werewolf is one of the seven rides at Universal's new Epic Universe that features a single-rider line. Photo credit: Melissa Heckscher If your aversion to long lines is stronger than your need to ride with your fellow Epic Universians, use the Single Rider Lines to get ahead of the crowds! These seven Epic Universe rides offer Single Rider Line queues: Mine-Cart Madness Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge Curse of the Werewolf Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry Hiccup's Wing Gliders Stardust Racers Ride the Constellation Carousel at Night The Constellation Carousel at Epic Universe is even more magical at night, with glowing lights and a celestial, cosmic vibe. Photo credit: Melissa Heckscher This is not your mother's merry-go-round. Beyond the traditional carousel turntable, this ride includes four smaller turntables and ride animals that aren't tethered to the ride's ceiling. It's an effect that makes it look like riders are floating through the air-especially at night, when each creature is illuminated by glowing orbs and a swirling sky of stars. It's no thrill ride, but it's beautiful. Plan Where and What You Want to Eat The Constellation Carousel at Epic Universe is even more magical at night, with glowing lights and a celestial, cosmic vibe. Photo credit: Melissa Heckscher With more than 30 dining locations spread across the five immersive lands, there's plenty to nosh on when you're ready to eat. That said, theme park designers took special care to make the food's theming as immersive as the lands. So fill your tummies wisely. Some must-try food and drinks: The Mario Burger (complete with a Mario cap on the bun) at Toadstool Cafe in Super Nintendo World. Reaper's Reserve is Dark Universe's exclusive beer, a caramel-spice brown ale from Orlando's Crooked Can Brewing Company. Choose the Right Side of the Stardust Racers Coaster Stardust Racers is a dual-track launched roller coaster in Epic Universe's Celestial Park that sends riders soaring through a cosmic-themed race filled with airtime hills, near-misses, and synchronized twists. Photo credit: Melissa Heckscher Described as 'Epic Universe's most thrilling coaster experience,' Stardust Racers is a sprawling 1.5-minute dueling coaster that whisks riders through a host of lifts, drops, and unique maneuvers including the 'Celestial Spin,' where the two competing coaster vehicles do an inverted crisscross while speeding through the air. If you're brave enough to ride it (I wasn't), you may wonder which track to choose: Photon (the yellow track) or Pulsar (the green track)? Both reach speeds of 62 miles per hour and heights up to 133 feet, but insiders say the green track is more intense. To choose it, veer right when choosing a line. Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is a Dark Ride-but I Didn't Get Nauseous The gothic castle facade of the Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment ride at Universal Epic Universe. Photo credit: Melissa Heckscher Families with small kids may wonder if the Monsters Unchained ride is too scary for their kids. And while the answer largely depends on your kids (my 10-year-old was totally unfazed by it, and I saw many younger kids happily on board), I'd say kids under 7 may want to skip it (guests must be 48 inches tall to ride anyway, so it may be a non-issue). Without spoiling the fun: This is an in-the-dark ride that tosses riders around (but not upside down) in a fixed set (mixed with background projections). You'll whirl through the dark underbelly of Frankenstein's castle while a realistic-looking crew of infamous monsters-including Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon-do their best to scare you. Is it scary? Kind of. The monsters themselves might frighten young kids-these animatronics are next-level!-but there are no sudden drops or steep hills. The whole experience is like a high-tech funhouse ride, featuring marvelously realistic creatures and immersive effects. And while a few Reddit users reported feeling queasy, the general consensus is that most riders come out feeling just fine. Don't Sit in Front at the Untrainable Dragon Show The Isle of Berk brings the How to Train Your Dragon world to life with "The Untrainable Dragon" show, two exciting rides, and animatronic dragons galore. Photo credit: Universal Orlando Resort. This is a can't-miss show for anyone who loves How to Train Your Dragon. I don't want to ruin the surprises, but let's just say the most exciting thing about the whole spectacle isn't happening on the stage-but above the audience-and that means sitting in the middle to back of the theater will give you a better view of the aerial action. Get an Express Pass Sure, Express Passes run about $170 on top of a regular park ticket (which starts at $134 per day), but if you can manage it, it can mean the difference between riding a few rides the whole day-and riding all of them. Express Pass lines let you whisk past the masses to the front of the line. The only downside? Not all Epic rides take Express Passes. Currently, Express Passes are accepted at all of the rides except for the Ministry of Magic (which does a "Virtual Queue," meaning guests can reserve a spot in line through the Universal app), Dragon Racers Rally, and Mine-Cart Madness. SheBuysTravel Tip: The best way to get Express Passes for your whole crew is to stay at one of the luxe Loews properties at Universal – Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando, Loews Portofino Bay Hotel or Loews Royal Pacific Resort. A night at one of those hotels can be pricey, but its biggest perk is Unlimited Express Passes for everyone staying in the room. And best of all, the pass are good for the day you check in and the day you check out – two days' worth of faster-line access for one night's stay. For a family of four, that can mean you'll actually save money by booking the pricey room. Some Souvenirs are Worth the Price Power-Up bands are just one of the many souvenirs that can be used within Epic Universe to unlock special activities and surprises. Photo credit: Universal Orlando Resort. If you're a parent and you can get through a theme park without buying your kids at least a few souvenirs, props to you. But if you've prepped your wallet for the barrage of begging you'll likely face, here are two things that might be worth the purchase: Power-Up Bands ($40) – These tech bracelets turn the physical land of Super Nintendo World into a real-life video game, unlocking myriad challenges that tiny gamers will love (it also gives you and your kids a good chunk of time where you won't have to be waiting in line for a ride!). Collect digital coins, earn stamps, complete interactive Key Challenges, and unlock a special Bowser Jr. boss battle. The bands can also track your achievements in the Universal app, let you compete on leaderboards, and even function as amiibo for Nintendo Switch games at home.
