This whole weapon class lock thing is the best test of intent from DICE with Battlefield 6. - Will they listen to feedback?- Or are they yadayadaing it away for a year like with the specialists?

EA thinks it got Battlefield right this time, projecting confidence to investors in advance of a summer reveal: 'When we get it right, Battlefield is a giant franchise and often the biggest shooter in the year'
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. After the unhappy reception for Battlefield 2042, EA went all in on player feedback, methodically addressing complaints and promising that the next Battlefield game will center the opinions of fans from the start, with what EA CEO Andrew Wilson calls "the biggest playtesting initiative in franchise history." Wilson has been talking up Battlefield 6 (or whatever the new game ends up being called) to investors for a while now, and in this week's quarterly address he reported that a "core group" of playtesters have already played thousands of hours of the game. The CEO reiterated his usual talking points during the call: This is the "biggest Battlefield" yet, with "the biggest team behind it" yet, and EA has learned its lesson from Battlefield 2042. "We've always worked closely with the community, but we haven't always worked as closely as we should have," he said during the Q&A portion of the call. "We haven't always really worked to help them understand the things that we're building and for us to understand the things that they really want out of a Battlefield. "We know that when we get it right, Battlefield is a giant franchise and often the biggest shooter in the year. And so this time, we wanted to ensure that, one, our player base and our global community had a better understanding of the things that we were building and how we were building and some of the approaches that we're taking to building, but more importantly, we wanted them to have the ability to feed back on map construction, weapon lineup, progression, all of the things that make Battlefield great at Battlefield scale." Wilson also acknowledged that he would say that everything is going great, but even so, I can't say I'm not curious about what makes this Battlefield so "big." The word probably doesn't refer to map size or player count, since Battlefield 2042's 128-player maps weren't received all that well. It may just mean that they've spent a lot of money on it, which they clearly have. This is the first Battlefield produced with Infinity Ward and Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella in charge of the series, and a bunch of studios are involved aside from series progenitor DICE. Ripple Effect, which made the cool Portal custom servers mode for Battlefield 2042, is "working on a new Battlefield experience." Motive, the studio behind the Dead Space remake and Star Wars: Squadrons, is working on singleplayer. Need for Speed studio Criteorion is working on Battlefield, too, as well as another "Central Tech Team." Fellow PC Gamer Battlefield-liker Morgan Park and I have a running joke about new Battlefield games, which is that the newest Battlefield is always the worst Battlefield ever, but only until the next one comes out, at which point it becomes the best Battlefield ever, and everyone wonders how EA could've been so foolish as to change direction. Will the new Battlefield break the cycle? It's hard to imagine a lot of people going to bat for Battlefield 2042 given how acidic the initial response was, but it is funny to notice Delta Force, a free-to-play shooter that cribs quite a bit from Battlefield 2042, doing brilliantly on Steam today. EA will now open up its Battlefield Labs testing program to even more players as it heads into a summer reveal. So far, a 10 second clip in the Battlefield Labs announcement video is all we've seen of the game, at least officially—you can find supposed leaked footage with a quick search, and, yep, it looks like a Battlefield game. 2025 games: This year's upcoming releasesBest PC games: Our all-time favoritesFree PC games: Freebie festBest FPS games: Finest gunplayBest RPGs: Grand adventuresBest co-op games: Better together Sign in to access your portfolio

GTA 6 launch delayed: How other game publishers are trying to capitalise on the launch window
Rockstar-parent Take-Two Interactive recently announced the postponement of "Grand Theft Auto VI" ( GTA 6) from fall this year until May of the following year. Following this delay, rival game publishers are reportedly moving quickly to secure release dates for their games in the fall. The absence of Rockstar Games ' highly anticipated title from this year's lineup has created an opportunity for other games to avoid a direct clash and gain more prominence. A report claims that analysts and industry executives expect a wave of announcements for the fall release window. The delay has also provided "breathing room" in the fall schedule for other publishers to release their titles without competing directly with a potential blockbuster, the report adds. However, Rockstar has released the second trailer of the upcoming game which received over 475 million views across platforms within 24 hours. The video had over 106 million views on YouTube alone at the time of writing. Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 In a statement to the news agency Reuters, Obbe Vermeij, former technical director at Rockstar Games, said: 'Publishers had delayed the announcement of the release dates of their games. Releasing after or even just before GTA VI would diminish their sales. Expect a number of announcements in the coming months of games that will now target fall release dates.' How other publishers are planning to use GTA 6's previous launch window Just days after Rockstar's GTA 6 postponement, Electronic Arts (EA) announced that its new Battlefield title will launch before EA's fiscal year ends in March 2026. Similarly, Take‑Two Interactive plans to release Mafia: The Old Country in the key September–early December window, which is traditionally bolstered by holiday sales. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Other developers, including Techland with 'Dying Light: The Beast' and Embracer with 'Killing Floor 3,' are targeting the same period, though many major titles can't shift schedules on short notice due to five‑ to seven‑year development cycles. As per the Reuters report, analysts suggest the slot may now favour expansion packs, remasters, and smaller studios with nearly finished projects. EA CEO Andrew Wilson noted the launch window is 'clearer than it was before,' and an NYU Stern professor estimated that Battlefield may sell 4–5 million units by March 2026, compared to 3–4 million if GTA 6 had released as planned. EA's annual franchises, such as its FC soccer and Madden NFL series, are also expected to face less direct competition during this timeframe, Reuters reports. AI Masterclass for Students. GTA 6 release date sparks panic as rival companies fear new delay
Rockstar's newly announced launch date for GTA 6 has led to panicked meetings at other studios, as they try to dodge its blast zone. You may have already heard, but after originally being slated for autumn 2025, Rockstar has pushed back the launch of GTA 6 to May 26, 2026. We already knew publishers were trying to avoid the game's release date, with the likes of Ghost of Yōtei and Marathon now no longer in the firing line, but the delay has reportedly caused a new wave of panic for those that were planning to launch games next year. In theory, announcing the May date, over a year in advance, should give companies plenty of time to pivot, but uncertainty around whether GTA 6 could be delayed again has led to some 'emergency meetings'. In a report on Bloomberg, the delay of GTA 6 is likened to a 'massive game of 4D chess' which is 'playing out across the entire video game industry', as business executives try to assess whether Rockstar 'will actually finish the game in time'. According to the report, various unnamed studios working on games slated for autumn 2026 are 'praying that Rockstar doesn't slip again', while others are hoping for the opposite 'so they have an excuse to delay to 2027 and score more time'. One developer on a 'big multiplayer game' previously delayed their release date from autumn 2025 to spring 2026, a decision partially made to 'get far away' from GTA 6. Now, however, it is 'caught in a vice' due to the costs of delaying the game for a second time. During its latest earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson seemed newly positive about the release window for the next Battlefield, in light of GTA 6's delay. The shooter is set to launch at some point before March 2026, at least two months clear of Rockstar's juggernaut. However, others aren't quite so scared. Publisher Devolver Digital said it is planning to launch a game on the same date as GTA 6, although given the studio's history it's unclear if it is just a stunt for internet giggles. While GTA 6 is inevitably going to suck up attention when it is released, it's unclear whether it will have detrimental impact on other games releasing around the same time. When GTA 5 came out on September 17, 2013, FIFA 14 was still released a week later, with Nintendo's The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and The Wonderful 101 on the Wii U also out within days of the game. However, Activision previously released 2018's Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 roughly a month earlier than usual to avoid Rockstar's last game, Red Dead Redemption 2. The latter went onto to become the best-selling game of that year, beating Black Ops 4, so there's good reason to avoid Rockstar's blast radius. The unprecedented success of GTA 5 (210 million copies sold, as of February this year), coupled with a less stable industry than 2013, means GTA 6 will launch in very different circumstances, when compared to its predecessor. For some within the industry, the impact of GTA 6 doesn't represent a much-needed boost in general interest, that will be good for everyone, but another 'forever' title which will suck away attention from all the other games in the years to come. It's so strange how people talk like GTA 6 is going to be the shot in the arm that the game industry needs. How does a GTA 6 release benefit any game company other than Rockstar? Trickle down theory doesn't work. I don't care if "the industry" makes $6b, I care whether a wider variety of games sell. — Brandon Sheffield (@ 2025-05-06T18:03:19.073Z In a post on Bluesky, Brandon Sheffield, director at Necrosoft Games, wrote: 'It's so strange how people talk like GTA 6 is going to be the shot in the arm that the games industry needs. How does a GTA 6 release benefit any game company other than Rockstar? Trickle down theory doesn't work. I don't care if 'the industry' makes $6 billion, I care whether a wider variety of games sell. More Trending 'GTA 6 releasing does the opposite of helping the industry in my view – it will become another forever game like Fortnite that draws eyes away from new releases, and becomes one of the only games the general public plays, to the exclusion of all else. Delay it forever as far as I'm concerned!' As for whether GTA 6 could be pushed back again beyond May 2026, Rockstar has often delayed its games several times before launch. In the past, it has typically launched new games in the second half of the year, but there are some exceptions to the rule, with the original Red Dead Redemption launching in May 2010 and GTA 4 in April 2008. The delays aren't unusually as long as a year though, which gives some hope that this will be the only one for GTA 6. Following the announcement of the delay, Rockstar released the second trailer for GTA 6, which features a wealth of hidden details.
