North Las Vegas blood drive involves friendly competition between firefighters, police
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Fourth Annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is happening today at Aliante Hotel and Casino. The blood drive is a friendly yet meaningful competition between North Las Vegas police officers and firefighters to see who can rally the most blood donations for the Red Cross of Southern Nevada. Racheal Flanigan from the Red Cross explained how the event works: donors can reserve a time online or simply walk in between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The process takes about an hour, and after donating, participants receive a ticket they can cast in support of either the police or fire department. At the end of the day, the team with the most tickets will be crowned champion! Last year's champion was the North Las Vegas Police Department. Officers Antonio Rivera and Mario Rios shared their plans to defend the title and even hinted at a secret weapon they might unleash later in the day. While they're in it to win it, both discussed how crucial blood donations are, especially as we head into the busy summer months. Fire Chief Joseph Calhoun from the North Las Vegas Fire Department shared his own game plan for victory, pointing out that today's training session at the fire academy could give Team Fire a serious boost in donor numbers. Chief Calhoun also reminded us that donating blood saves lives. 'Whether it's a car accident, surgery, or an unexpected crisis, the need for blood is constant and urgent.' While the police and fire departments are getting ready for their 4th annual Battle of the Badges they wanted to remind us that everyone's working toward the same goal: building up the local blood supply and making a life-saving difference in Southern Nevada. Topeka Fire and Police clash for the Kansas community
TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka Police and Topeka Fire competed for the most blood donations with Monday's 9th annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. Those donations go to support patients all around the Sunflower State. A member of the local Red Cross says that while we aren't in a critical blood shortage now, this time of year is imperative for blood drives. The summer season has unique challenges that make it a difficult time to collect donations. FBI Director Kash Patel says he will pledge more agents to Kansas, Topeka 'People are on vacation, we collect a lot of blood at schools and universities, they're closed for the summer,' Jane Blocher with the Greater Kansas Area Red Cross said. 'So it's a great way to fortify our blood resources going into the summer season. We're grateful not only to the first responders that come in and donate blood, but to the community as well who come in and roll up their sleeves and give that gift of life.' The goal was to bring in 42 pints of blood, the two emergency response organizations collected 47 pints. For the second year in a row, Topeka Fire was the victor of this year's Battle of the Badges. St. Paul police: Driver ran red light, fatally hit another driver; alcohol suspected
A driver was killed Sunday night in St. Paul when another driver sped through a red light and struck his vehicle, police said. Preliminary information is that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, said St. Paul Police Sgt. Toy Vixayvong, a department spokesman. Police responded shortly after 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Arlington Avenue and Dale Street. A man driving a sedan west on Arlington ran a red light light at Dale and hit a sport-utility vehicle that was heading south on Dale, Vixayvong said. The SUV was pushed about 40 yards and St. Paul firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle. Fire department medics transported the man to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect was taken to Regions Hospital with apparent non-life threatening injuries. Information was not immediately available Monday morning about whether he's in custody. The investigation is ongoing. Fallen Burnsville, Minneapolis officers to be recognized at national law enforcement memorial
The names of three Minnesota police officers killed in the line of duty last year have been engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. and they'll be remembered in ceremonies this week. Burnsville Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matt Ruge were fatally shot by a suspect during a standoff, while multiple children were in the home, in February 2024. Burnsville Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth also lost his life in the incident. In Minneapolis, Officer Jamal Mitchell was shot in killed last May. More than 160 Burnsville officers and family members traveled to D.C. 'with generous donations' from Burnsville residents, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Burnsville Police and Fire Foundations and donors across the country, according to a statement from Burnsville police. 'Paul and Matt were incredible police officers who worked tirelessly to keep our community safe,' Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz said in a statement. 'They were dedicated officers, teammates and friends to everyone who served alongside them. They saved the lives of seven children that tragic day and their sacrifices will never be forgotten, their lives will always be remembered, and their spirit will live on in our department and our community.' Surrounding police departments are working in Burnsville for officers while they're attending the memorial. Allowing Burnsville officers to gather 'as part of a larger police family is an important part of grieving, healing, and remembering,' Schwartz said. Mitchell, Ruge and Elmstrand are among 148 officers who died in the line of duty in 2024 and whose names were added to the memorial, along with 197 names from previous years. They are being recognized during National Police Week. In D.C., there will be a candlelight vigil at the memorial at 7 p.m. CST Tuesday. Livestreaming links can be found at In Minnesota, the St. Paul Police Department will hold its annual Memorial Day service at noon Wednesday; it's usually held in Mears Park but will be at the Minnesota Peace Officers Memorial on the state Capitol grounds this year. Also at the state memorial site, the Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association will host its annual service at 7 p.m. Thursday. Finseth was memorialized at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Maryland on May 3 and May 4, and his name was unveiled at the memorial there.
