North Las Vegas blood drive involves friendly competition between firefighters, police
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Fourth Annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is happening today at Aliante Hotel and Casino.
The blood drive is a friendly yet meaningful competition between North Las Vegas police officers and firefighters to see who can rally the most blood donations for the Red Cross of Southern Nevada.
Racheal Flanigan from the Red Cross explained how the event works: donors can reserve a time online or simply walk in between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The process takes about an hour, and after donating, participants receive a ticket they can cast in support of either the police or fire department. At the end of the day, the team with the most tickets will be crowned champion!
Last year's champion was the North Las Vegas Police Department. Officers Antonio Rivera and Mario Rios shared their plans to defend the title and even hinted at a secret weapon they might unleash later in the day. While they're in it to win it, both discussed how crucial blood donations are, especially as we head into the busy summer months.
Fire Chief Joseph Calhoun from the North Las Vegas Fire Department shared his own game plan for victory, pointing out that today's training session at the fire academy could give Team Fire a serious boost in donor numbers. Chief Calhoun also reminded us that donating blood saves lives.
'Whether it's a car accident, surgery, or an unexpected crisis, the need for blood is constant and urgent.'
While the police and fire departments are getting ready for their 4th annual Battle of the Badges they wanted to remind us that everyone's working toward the same goal: building up the local blood supply and making a life-saving difference in Southern Nevada.

Dog left in crate during blazing Nevada heat dies, officials say. Owner charged
A dog owner has been charged after being accused of leaving her pet in a kennel during high temperatures, eventually killing the pup, Nevada officials said. Olivia Underwood, 30, was accused of leaving her 3-year-old French bulldog named Jazzy in her kennel while she was at work, police told KLAS. Underwood put the crate outside on May 30, approximately 20 hours before Jazzy's death, the report obtained by KLAS said. Underwood said she put Jazzy in her kennel outside and then went to work a 12-hour shift at the University Medical Center, police told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. She arrived home from her shift and 'went inside and went to sleep' but failed to check on the pup, officers told KVVU. Although Underwood didn't check on Jazzy, she 'had enough time to get off work, order an Uber for her grandmother, eventually change into sleeping clothes and fall asleep,' according to the arrest affidavit obtained by KTNV. Temperatures reached 107 degrees in Las Vegas on May 31, according to The Weather Channel. Eventually, neighbors intervened and went through the unlocked back gate as they noticed Jazzy 'appeared to be dying,' officers told KVVU. The neighbors poured water over Jazzy's body three times before realizing she was 'no longer breathing and became stiff,' according to KVVU. Underwood went outside and began cursing at neighbors and when police arrived, she told them Jazzy's kennel was normally inside but because she 'made a mess in the crate,' it was put outside to be cleaned, officers told KTNV. Underwood was arrested and charged with willful/malicious/torture/maim/kill dog, according to a June 1 news release by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
