'Big-game players': Calgary Wild FC add Kathryn Harvey, Jorian Baucom to bolster offence
Calgary Wild FC have bolstered their offence by adding Kathryn Harvey and Jorian Baucom to the roster. Article content Harvey (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Baucom (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who will provide additional depth to the Northern Super League club's attack, both joined their new squad for the first time at practice on Thursday. 'Kathryn and Jorian are two big additions to our club. They are big-game players who bring additional energy, drive and a wealth of international experience to our club,' said Wild FC sporting director Alix Bruch. 'They are creative in the attack and will bring speed and additional strength to our offence as we advance into the second half of our season.' Harvey, who played varsity lacrosse with LIU Brooklyn before transferring to Trinity Western University, was twice named to both the CanWest All-Second Team and USports Championship All-Star Team. She capped her varsity career finishing in the top five for game-winning goals. Harvey's scoring touch continued in the professional ranks where she was the top scorer for Denmark's Division 1 team. She also played for Fatih Vatan S.K. of the Turkish Women's Football Super League before signing with Melbourne City in the Australian A-League Women, where she tallied two goals in her debut. 'I'm really excited to play for the Wild FC, not only because it's my first time playing professionally in my home country, but also because of the team's culture and the culture of the organization as a whole,' said Harvey. 'It was great to be getting warm, welcoming messages from the team even before I arrived in Calgary so I already felt like I was part of the group.' Baucom was also attracted to the culture that has been created within Alberta's first professional women's sports team and is ready to soar with the Wild FC. 'I immediately knew this was an environment I wanted to be a part of — from the community and fan base to the facilities and stadium,' said Baucom, who played college soccer at Louisiana State University (2014-17) and University of Colorado Boulder (2017-18). 'I felt the passion and genuineness behind this club after speaking with Lydia (Bedford, the head coach) and Alix, and their desire to want to grow this into something special. I hope I can come in, make an impact and continue to move the club in the right direction.' Baucom is no stranger to playing for newly created sides. She comes to the Wild FC from DC Power FC, where she was the first player signing in the USL Super League. Her name is also in the history books as the first scorer in DC Power history. Baucom has had a strong professional career while playing for the Houston Dash (National Women's Soccer League) before signing with AC Sparta Prague (Czech Women's First League), and MSV Duisburg. She suited up in the National Women's Soccer League with short stints at Racing Louisville (2021) and the North Carolina Courage. Baucom headed to Portugal to play for SF Damaiense. She notched 27 goals across the 2023-24 season while suiting up for Hibernian in Scotland before her most recent stop in the United States with Fort Lauderdale United FC. Both newcomers were attracted to the Calgary Wild FC's commitment to community, ensuring all feel welcome at McMahon Stadium while also working equally hard to grow the game throughout Alberta.

Heritage's Banister and Aquinas' Baucom are the Broward Softball Coaches of the Year
It wasn't that long ago that winning state softball championships was the norm at St. Thomas Aquinas and American Heritage. Both prestigious programs made it back to the state final four this season, and could be close to restoring those traditions in the near future. Under the direction of veteran coach Bryan Baucom, St. Thomas Aquinas advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 2017. And under coach Sam Banister, who finished her third season as Heritage's head coach, the Patriots advanced to the state final for the first time since winning the most recent of their eight state titles in 2018. Baucom and Banister are this year's Miami Herald Softball Coaches of the Year for Broward County. Baucom wins the Class 7A-5A honors after guiding the Raiders to state in Class 5A after going 16-13 and navigating through the second-toughest rated schedule in the state. The Aquinas program found itself struggling after the 2020 COVID-shortened season. But since 2022, when the Raiders broke a three-year drought of not making it to regionals, they have advanced one round further in the playoffs. Moving down to 5A this season meant Aquinas would not have to deal with nationally-ranked Doral Academy, which eliminated the Raiders in the regional finals last season. Aquinas crushed Stuart South Fork 10-1 in this year's regional final after surviving an 8-7 thriller against Pembroke Pines Charter in the semifinal. The Raiders' season ended with a 7-2 loss to Niceville in the state semifinals. But Baucom, who has led Aquinas to all four of its state championships, graduates only three senior starters. Banister's team has also continually moved a step closer to the mountaintop since she took over following legendary coach Marty Cooper's retirement before the 2023 season. Banister led Heritage to an impressive 23-3 record this season and to the Class 4A state final before the Patriots suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to Fort Walton Beach. But Heritage also returns a strong core since they graduated only one starter.

Third person charged with murder in fatal shooting of teen hockey player from O'Fallon
A third person has been indicted in the fatal shooting of Colin Brown, the O'Fallon teenager who was struck by a stray bullet while riding with his father on Interstate 55 in November. Diamond Baucom was indicted Thursday on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and shooting from a motor vehicle and three counts of armed criminal action, according to court records in St. Louis County. Two others previously were charged in connection with the fatal shooting. Both were named in the grand jury indictment Thursday. They included: Donovan M. Baucom, 28,was charged on Dec. 18 with first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon/shooting from a motor vehicle. Garrett Jordan III, 26, was charged the week prior on the same counts as Baucom. According to a probable cause statement, Baucom told St. Louis Metropolitan Police that Jordan 'fired shots during the shooting with a rifle.' Colin resided with his family in O'Fallon, but was a student and varsity hockey player at Christian Brothers College High School in Town and Country, Missouri. He also played with the Affton Americans hockey club in Affton, Missouri, and formerly was a junior varsity player with O'Fallon Ice Hockey Club. His death brought together the area's youth hockey community, who gathered for candle-light vigils in Colin's memory. The shooting occurred late on Nov. 23 night while he and his father, Calvin Brown, a retired lieutenant colonel with the Illinois State Police, were returning from a hockey game and going north on I-55 in St. Louis. Colin Brown was transported to a St. Louis hospital where he died six days later. According to the charging documents, witnesses, security video and cell phone location information led investigators to a dark-colored Audi, which they say Diamond Baucom loaned to her brother, Donovan Boucom, around the time of the shooting. Court records in Jordan's case state that a person who was going south on I-55 at the time when Colin was shot told police his car also was struck by gunfire. He said he had just entered I-55 after he left a nearby home on Minnesota Avenue. Police have processed ballistic damage to the car. According to the probable cause statement for Jordan, witnesses reported to police spotting the Audi parked on Minnesota Avenue near the scene of the shooting. Two assault-style rifles were recovered, police said. Surveillance video also captured the Audi going onto I-55 and returning to the Minnesota Avenue parking space following the shooting. The complaint against Baucom alleges 'the defendant, either acting alone or knowing in concert with another or others, knowingly discharged a firearm from an Audi, a motor vehicle, and, as a result of the above described conduct, Victim 1 suffered injury or death.' Both Baucom and Jordan are being held without bond. A no-bond warrant was also issued for Diamond Baucom.
