Kim Kardashian Paris robbery suspect dies unexpectedly ahead of trial

A key suspect in the 2016 Paris robbery of Kim Kardashian has died unexpectedly just before standing trial. Marceau Baum-Gertner, 72, who was accused of helping to find buyers for the jewellery stolen during the high-profile heist, died on 6 March, according to reports. Kardashian was attending Paris Fashion Week when masked men dressed as police officers forced entry into her hotel suite at the Hôtel de Pourtalès. She was held at gunpoint and tied up while the group stole jewellery worth an estimated $10 million. Baum-Gertner, known by the alias Nez Râpé or Rough Nose, had a long history of convictions for crimes including robbery, forgery, and dealing in stolen goods. He had been living in Paris and was regularly reporting to police while awaiting his trial. Sources close to the investigation said Baum-Gertner had been eager to clear his name in court. Reports from Daily Mail indicated that Baum-Gertner had received threats from former criminal associates as the trial date neared. Some sources expressed concerns that he might have been preparing to disclose further information about others involved. The trial, which is expected to involve more than ten suspects, including Didier 'Blue Eyes' Dubreucq and François 'Big Guy' Delaporte, is still scheduled to proceed. The French Justice Ministry described the crimes as 'to the detriment of Ms Kim Kardashian.' Kardashian is reportedly set to return to Paris in May to give testimony as a key witness. She has previously spoken publicly about the trauma of the event, recalling during an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians that she feared for her life during the attack.

Kim Kardashian Jewel Heist Suspect ‘Dies Suddenly' Before Trial

A prime suspect behind Kim Kardashian's 2016 Paris robbery has died before he could stand trial for the highly publicized crime. Kardashian was staying at the Hôtel de Pourtalès to attend Paris Fashion Week when a group of men dressed as police officers entered her hotel room, tied her up, and held her at gunpoint. They stole an estimated $10 million in jewelry from the reality TV star. Marceau Baum-Gertner, 72, was responsible for finding a buyer for the stolen goods, The Daily Mail reported. According to the Mail, Baum-Gertner died March 6, but officials had been in the dark about his death. He was due to stand trial on Monday along with 10 other men and at least one woman in their 60s and 70s deemed 'grandpa robbers.' Additional suspects include Didier 'Blue Eyes' Dubreucq, 69, François 'Big Guy' Delaporte, 61, and Aomar Ait Khedache, 69, among others. The details of Baum-Gertner's death are unknown, but he had been living in Paris and regularly reporting to police while he awaited trial, a source told the Mail. 'His name was on the defendants' list for the trial, and he was very enthusiastic about clearing his name in court,' the source said. However, Baum-Gertner had been receiving death threats from his gangland connections as the trial approached, the Mail reported. A source added that there was concern that he would 'name names.' A career criminal, known as Nez Râpé, or Rough Nose, Baum-Gertner has had multiple previous convictions for stolen goods, forgery, and robbery. The French Justice Ministry called Baum-Gertner's crimes 'to the detriment of Ms Kim Kardashian,' the Mail reported. Kardashian is reportedly scheduled to fly to Paris in May to give testimony as a key witness in the trial. During an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kardashian tearfully recounted that she thought that she would be raped and killed during the ordeal. 'Then [one of the armed men] duct tapes my face, my mouth, to get me to not yell or anything and then he grabs my legs and I wasn't, I had no clothes on under [my robe] and he pulled me towards him at the front of the bed,' she said. 'I thought, 'Okay, this is the moment. They are going to rape me.' 'I fully mentally prepped myself, and then he didn't, and he duct taped my legs together,' Kardashian added.

Key suspect in Kim Kardashian Paris robbery 'dies suddenly' before trial

Marceau Baum-Gertner, a key suspect in the 2016 $10,000,000 (£7,511,455) Paris robbery of Kim Kardashian, has reportedly died before the case was set to go to trial. Baum-Gertner died aged 72 on March 6, according to Mail Online, in Paris' 10th arrondissement. A cause of death has not yet been announced, but a source told the publication that his death was 'sudden.' 'Mr Baum-Gertner had been released on bail following his arrest over the Kim Kardashian robbery eight years ago and was living in Paris while regularly reporting to police,' the insider said. 'His name was on the defendants' list for the trial, and he was very enthusiastic about clearing his name in court. 'This was until he died suddenly in the 10th arrondissement of Paris on March 6.' 'He was suspected of liaising with mafia gangs from across the world over the Kardashian jewellery, and criminals are known to have issued threats against him following widespread publicity connected to the case.' Nicknamed 'Rough Nose', he was part of a group of 12 people set to go on trial at the Paris Assizes court on April 28 for kidnapping and armed robbery, nine years after the crime took place. In the early hours of October 3, 2016, while she was attending Paris Fashion Week, Kim was attacked in her room at the Hôtel de Pourtalès. The terrifying attack was led by five armed men, posing as police officers, who tied up the socialite and locked her in the bathroom, along with the concierge. They reportedly stole a jewellery box worth $6.7 million (£5.2million) and a ring worth $4.5 million (£3.4million)—both are believed to be her personal items. She also lost her smartphone during the attack. Baum-Gertner was alleged to have worked with the gang that committed the robbery as a fence, responsible for finding buyers for the stolen goods. Kardashian is set to attend the trial in Paris to face her attackers during the long-awaited trial. In January 2017, 17 people, including Baum-Gertner, were arrested in connection with the robbery. Twelve people are currently on remand and set to face trial. She recalled the experience on an episode of E! True Hollywood Story, which aired in 2019, saying the attack 'changed her whole life.' 'Right as I was about to fall asleep, I heard guys running up the stairs,' the mum-of-four explained. 'They wanted my ring and my jewellery, so I didn't fight back. 'I just gave them everything, and they tied me up. 'They wrapped duct tape over my eyes and my mouth. It was the scariest thing I've ever been through in my entire life, just thinking, you know, you're about to die. 'You're just kind of bracing yourself for the moment that they're going to shoot and kill you.' Appearing on The Alec Baldwin Show in 2018, she said she was 'grateful' for the incident. 'I was never depressed, but I wasn't motivated to get up and work like I used to. It shook me,' she explained. In 2021, Kim opened up to her sister Khloe about experiencing agoraphobia following the robbery. More Trending Coming out of lockdown during the pandemic brought back the fears she had then, as she felt unsafe being outside and tried to avoid fans who approached her and estranged husband Kanye West in the street. She continued: 'People were trying to come up to Kanye and talk to him. People were trying to come up to me and ask for photos and I was like, 'Absolutely not.' I would stop people and be like, 'Get away, this is my first time out. I'm not comfortable with you coming a step closer' 'I feel like I had agoraphobia, definitely, after my robbery in Paris. Definitely would stay in, hated to go out, I didn't want anyone to know where I was or be seen. I just had such anxiety.' 'Then I feel I was just getting back into it, we'd just gone to Paris, we just started travelling again, and then quarantine happened and I'm such a freak all over again and I never wanna leave.' Kim Kardashian's Paris robbery suspect dies suddenly weeks before trial

Marceau Baum-Gertner has died aged 72, just weeks before he was set to head to trial in connection with the 2016 robbery of Kim Kardashian. Baum-Gertner was arrested for being the suspected 'fence' of Kardashian's millions of euro worth of stolen goods, which were taken while she was held in her private Paris apartment at gunpoint. The suspect - who was known as Nez Râpé, or 'rough diamond' in the English term - had already racked up multiple convictions for robbery and involvement with stolen goods, and had allegedly been receiving threats from other underworld figures prior to his death. Speaking to the Mail Online, a source said: 'Mr Baum-Gertner had been released on bail following his arrest over the Kim Kardashian robbery eight years ago, and was living in Paris, while regularly reporting to police. His name was on the defendants' list for the trial, and he was very enthusiastic about clearing his name in court. "This was until he died suddenly in the 10th arrondissement of Paris on March 6. He was suspected of liaising with mafia gangs from across the world over the Kardashian jewellery, and criminals are known to have issued threats against him following widespread publicity connected to the case." Baum-Gertner was only named as the fourth defendant in the case on March 14, eight days after his death, while the trial is set to begin in Paris between April 28 and May 23. Kardashian will fly over from Los Angeles to attend the trial, after being robbed during Paris Fashion Week in October 2016. During the terrifying crime, the reality TV star was bound, gagged, and locked in a bathroom while masked men stole over €8.9 million worth of jewellery. The mother of four had been staying in a luxury residence in the 8th arrondissement of the French capital when in the early morning hours of October 3, five men disguised as police officers gained entry to the building after threatening a concierge at gunpoint. The concierge was forced to lead the men to Kardashian's private suite, where she was alone after her bodyguard had stepped out for the night. The assailants stormed into the apartment, held Kardashian at gunpoint, and forcibly restrained her. According to police reports, they tied her hands and feet with zip ties, taped her mouth shut, and locked her in the bathroom. During the terrifying ordeal, one of the robbers allegedly held a gun to her head while demanding access to her valuables. The thieves made off with a jewellery box containing an estimated €8.9 million worth of jewels and luxury goods, along with a €3.5 million diamond ring that Kardashian had shown off on social media in the days leading up to the robbery. The ring - an engagement gift from then-husband Kanye West - has still not been recovered to this day. Baum-Gertner being 72 at the time of his death is no surprise, as French investigators believe the robbery was orchestrated by a group of ageing career criminals. French media dubbed the suspects the "grandpa gang" due to their ages; many being in their 60s and 70s at the time of their arrest. DNA evidence and surveillance footage led to their identification and eventual detainment, with several suspects allegedly having confessed during interrogations.
