Key suspect in Kim Kardashian Paris robbery 'dies suddenly' before trial

Metro27-04-2025

Marceau Baum-Gertner, a key suspect in the 2016 $10,000,000 (£7,511,455) Paris robbery of Kim Kardashian, has reportedly died before the case was set to go to trial.
Baum-Gertner died aged 72 on March 6, according to Mail Online, in Paris' 10th arrondissement.
A cause of death has not yet been announced, but a source told the publication that his death was 'sudden.'
'Mr Baum-Gertner had been released on bail following his arrest over the Kim Kardashian robbery eight years ago and was living in Paris while regularly reporting to police,' the insider said.
'His name was on the defendants' list for the trial, and he was very enthusiastic about clearing his name in court.
'This was until he died suddenly in the 10th arrondissement of Paris on March 6.'
'He was suspected of liaising with mafia gangs from across the world over the Kardashian jewellery, and criminals are known to have issued threats against him following widespread publicity connected to the case.'
Nicknamed 'Rough Nose', he was part of a group of 12 people set to go on trial at the Paris Assizes court on April 28 for kidnapping and armed robbery, nine years after the crime took place.
In the early hours of October 3, 2016, while she was attending Paris Fashion Week, Kim was attacked in her room at the Hôtel de Pourtalès.
The terrifying attack was led by five armed men, posing as police officers, who tied up the socialite and locked her in the bathroom, along with the concierge.
They reportedly stole a jewellery box worth $6.7 million (£5.2million) and a ring worth $4.5 million (£3.4million)—both are believed to be her personal items. She also lost her smartphone during the attack.
Baum-Gertner was alleged to have worked with the gang that committed the robbery as a fence, responsible for finding buyers for the stolen goods.
Kardashian is set to attend the trial in Paris to face her attackers during the long-awaited trial.
In January 2017, 17 people, including Baum-Gertner, were arrested in connection with the robbery. Twelve people are currently on remand and set to face trial.
She recalled the experience on an episode of E! True Hollywood Story, which aired in 2019, saying the attack 'changed her whole life.'
'Right as I was about to fall asleep, I heard guys running up the stairs,' the mum-of-four explained. 'They wanted my ring and my jewellery, so I didn't fight back.
'I just gave them everything, and they tied me up.
'They wrapped duct tape over my eyes and my mouth. It was the scariest thing I've ever been through in my entire life, just thinking, you know, you're about to die.
'You're just kind of bracing yourself for the moment that they're going to shoot and kill you.'
Appearing on The Alec Baldwin Show in 2018, she said she was 'grateful' for the incident.
'I was never depressed, but I wasn't motivated to get up and work like I used to. It shook me,' she explained.
In 2021, Kim opened up to her sister Khloe about experiencing agoraphobia following the robbery. More Trending
Coming out of lockdown during the pandemic brought back the fears she had then, as she felt unsafe being outside and tried to avoid fans who approached her and estranged husband Kanye West in the street.
She continued: 'People were trying to come up to Kanye and talk to him. People were trying to come up to me and ask for photos and I was like, 'Absolutely not.' I would stop people and be like, 'Get away, this is my first time out. I'm not comfortable with you coming a step closer'
'I feel like I had agoraphobia, definitely, after my robbery in Paris. Definitely would stay in, hated to go out, I didn't want anyone to know where I was or be seen. I just had such anxiety.'
'Then I feel I was just getting back into it, we'd just gone to Paris, we just started travelling again, and then quarantine happened and I'm such a freak all over again and I never wanna leave.'

E-fit image released after man's body discovered on Somerset beach

An e-fit image has been released in a bid to identify a man whose body was discovered on a Somerset beach last year. The body, of a man believed to be aged in his 40s or 50s, was discovered at Lilstock Beach, near Bridgwater, Somerset, on December 28. Earlier this year, Avon and Somerset Police launched an appeal to identify the man but this has not yet proved successful. Detectives have now created an e-fit image of the man, whose body is believed to have washed up after being in the water for between one and five days. His death is not believed to be suspicious. Detective Inspector George Pettingell, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: 'We hope that this image might be the key to helping us identify this man and importantly be able to update any family and friends. 'Forensic and DNA inquiries have established the man is likely of either Croatian or Bosnian heritage. 'He is also white, of large build and estimated to be aged in his 40s or 50s. 'He had a shaved head and was wearing a black jacket, black jumper, red trousers and black Nike trainers. 'We've been in contact with neighbouring forces but still so far have been unable to establish his identity. 'If you think you might know who this man is based off this information and the e-fit image, please contact us.' Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and provide the reference number 5224412225, or give information through the force's website.

Dad charged with murder after leaving daughter, 1, inside hot car for nine hours

Joseph Boatman, 32, allegedly left the tot inside the vehicle for nine hours after consuming 'multiple' alcoholic beverages - and while temperatures that day reached a scorching 35C A dad has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder after his one-year-old daughter died in a hot car where she was left for over nine hours. Joseph Boatman, from Louisiana, allegedly left the tot in the vehicle after consuming "multiple" alcoholic beverages - and when temperatures in Madisonville, Kentucky, that day reached a scorching 35C, with a heat index of 40C. The 32-year-old man was taken into custody on Sunday after deputies from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office responded to a call just before noon. A family member had discovered the unresponsive toddler still strapped in her car seat. Officers say Boatman picked up his daughter from a relative's home early that morning after he "consumed multiple alcoholic beverages." He allegedly placed the child in a car seat around 2:30am, then "went back inside the residence and never returned to the vehicle," according to the sheriff's office. "This is a devastating loss that no family ever wants to face," said Sheriff Randy Smith. "When a child is left in a vehicle, especially on a day when the heat index climbs over 100 degrees, the outcome can turn deadly in a matter of minutes. This case involved compromised judgment, and the result was heartbreaking." Boatman is currently being held on a $75,000 (£55,000) cash bond, according to his arrest report. This is not his first encounter with the law, as he is a registered sex offender and was previously convicted of online solicitation of a minor, MailOnline reports. In June 2019, Boatman was arrested as part of "Operation Broken Heart," a nationwide effort led by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry's Bureau of Investigation. Boatman's daughter is the fifth child in the US to die in a hot car this year, according to data from Kids and Car Safety. The non-profit reports that since 1990, at least 1,130 children have died in hot vehicles, with an additional 75,000 surviving with injuries. On average, 38 children die each year in hot cars - 88% of them aged three or younger.

Tragic last sighting of 'frail wife' and carer before car plummeted off cliff

John and Lynn King died instantly after their Ford Mondeo plummeted 300ft off a cliff on the Isle of Wight on Friday afternoon - with police now investigating the tragedy A neighbour has recalled the last time he saw a bus driver and his frail wife just hours before their tragic death. John and Lynn King - thought to be aged in their early 70s - died instantly after their Ford Mondeo plummeted 300ft off a cliff on Friday. The silver vehicle, which also contained their two Dachshund dogs, plunged to the ground after going off the ridge at Alum Bay on the Isle of Wight. ‌ Lynn was so ill and frail she hadn't left home for two years, neighbours said. One person told Mail Online: "It's really sad, I spoke to John a few times. He would always park his car right outside my house. I think I saw his wife maybe twice in the three years they'd been living in the road. ‌ "She wasn't well. I don't know exactly what she was suffering from but I think it was serious. John was effectively her carer. I never saw nurses or medically trained staff ever go in. I think he did everything for her." 'Frail' woman pictured after she and husband plunged to death with dachshunds The neighbour said he saw John help Lynn to the car on Friday afternoon. They also had their two dachshunds with them, the friend added. They said: "His wife looked really, really frail. She was hunched over quite badly and was finding it very difficult to walk. I was surprised to see her out of the house. "That was the last time I saw them. They never came home." The neighbour added: "I don't know if they had children or grandchildren. I'd say there were in their early 70s. But John was a nice guy and doted on his wife." John was a bus driver for Southern Vectis, an operator on the Isle of Wight, and it is understood he knew the roads across the island well. ‌ Police continue to investigate the deaths and are believed to be searching the couple's terraced home in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Photos of the aftermath show the wreckage of the car submerged in the water. With the roof and bonnet crumpled, while coastguard searched around it. READ MORE: Alum Bay crash: All we know as two dead after car plunges off Isle of Wight cliff Police said on Monday: "We can confirm the death of two people, a woman and a man aged 66 and 67 respectively, following an incident at The Needles on the Isle of Wight on Friday 6 June. ‌ "We were called at 7.21pm after a Ford Mondeo, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below. Two dogs, both Dachshunds, were also in the car and died in the incident. "Formal identification procedures are ongoing, but next of kin have been notified. A post-mortem examination will take place on Tuesday 10 June. "As part of the ongoing investigation into the incident, which has been referred to the Coroner, officers have been carrying out enquiries at an address on Arctic Road, Cowes to help them to establish what happened."
