Inside Bay Area preparations for the 2026 World Cup
Over a million people are expected to descend upon the Bay Area next summer for six FIFA World Cup matches at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, and local officials are at work to ensure everything runs smoothly. Why it matters: The games, which will take place mere months after the Bay Area hosts the Super Bowl, are projected to generate up to $360 million in economic activity across the entire region. State of play: The Bay Area Host Committee (BAHC), an organization first formed ahead of the 2016 Super Bowl, is tasked with overseeing the execution of World Cup events, which will include five group stage matches and one round of 32 knockout match. Their goal is twofold, BAHC president and CEO Zaileen Janmohamed told Axios: Fundraise enough money to cover all expenses, and work with nine counties and over 100 cities to maximize economic impact. Behind the scenes: Officials said in December that the World Cup will cost Santa Clara an estimated $45-50 million. But BAHC is expected to cover those costs, including stadium modifications, security and equipment needs, per an agreement with the city. The 49ers have agreed to backstop funds related to stadium renovations if BAHC is unable to cover all costs. BAHC is also receiving $10 million in state funding for public safety needs. What they're saying:"This is historic and unprecedented, and no one has ever done it before, and therefore there's no template on how to do it," Janmohamed told Axios. "We will be the epicenter of sport." Though she declined to provide a specific target fundraising figure, Janmohamed said, "We have a lot of energy in the marketplace." San José, which borders Santa Clara, is working to raise a few million dollars for concerts, drone shows and watch parties downtown, which will serve as a "centerpiece for the fan experience," Mayor Matt Mahan told Axios. Local officials are also developing a QR code and app to help visitors navigate community events, Mahan said. "We want to build a seamless experience" from San Francisco to South Bay, he added. Charles Lutvak, spokesperson for San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, did not provide details about the city's World Cup preparations but said they "expect to welcome tens of thousands of fans."

49ers face potentially significant bill for hosting World Cup games
In 2026, Levi's Stadium will have a more active year than usual. It starts with the Super Bowl and continues with the hosting of World Cup games. And the World Cup matches could end up being expensive for the 49ers. Via the San Francisco Chronicle, the revised California budget from Governor Gavin Newsom includes no state funding for the World Cup. The 49ers previously agreed to cover a $37 million deficit for the Bay Area Host Committee, if the committee fails to raise enough money to conduct six matches at the Santa Clara venue. The host committee has been seeking private donations. Both the committee and the 49ers have been lobbying he government for more funding. The event is expected to cost $50 million to stage, with the project losing money. Which leads to an obvious question. Why in the hell did Santa Clara make a proposal to host World Cup games?

San Jose mayor preps for Super Bowl 60, World Cup with New Orleans visit
(KRON) — As New Orleans gears up for the Super Bowl, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan is there too taking notes. With Levi's Stadium set to host Super Bowl 60 in 2026, along with multiple FIFA World Cup matches, Mayor Mahan is studying how the South Bay can maximize the massive events. Why are Super Bowl ticket prices down? 'We're looking at security, fan activations, wayfinding, how people experience the event,' Mayor Mahan told KRON4 News. Representing the Bay Area Host Committee, Mahan is preparing for the transition as the region takes the reins after this year's big game. He emphasized that these events are more than just a few hours of sports — they're multi-day spectacles that require careful planning. 'The game itself is three hours, but the event is more like three or four days and we're looking at how people experience the Super Bowl,' he said. San Jose businesses are already buzzing about the potential impact. Bob Cina, head chef at District in San Pedro Square, hopes the events will bring more foot traffic but says the city needs infrastructure improvements. 'I would say more special events and since the street is closed down just more things going on. Farmers market would be great, more events like bands,' Cina said. San Pedro Social General Manager Ja'Vonn Williams echoed the excitement, calling sports gatherings 'a communal thing for San Jose itself is to get together.' Mahan sees the Super Bowl and World Cup as a chance to showcase Silicon Valley's innovation. 'The thing we should leverage is our innovation,' said Mahan. 'We should be showing off our successful companies: Google, we are a stone's throw from Nvidia, Apple, Waymo. These are the kinds of things we should be showing off and I think we will be as we're showing off San Jose and the Bay Area to the world next year.' With just a year until kickoff, Mahan said the focus will be on boosting live entertainment and outdoor events in 2025 to ensure the South Bay is ready for the world stage. 'Next year is def on my mind,' Mahan said. 'It's going to be huge for this area. I'm hoping the Niners are involved. Super Bowl at Levi's is going to be huge for this community for sure.'
