Former Bay City Roller walks free from court

A former Bay City Roller musician accused of stalking and harassing family members has walked free from court after a mistake by prosecutors. Pat McGlynn was alleged to have followed and spied on his brother John and sister-in-law Yvonne outside their home in Loanhead, Midlothian. Pat, 67, was also claimed to have acted aggressively, gesticulate towards the couple and point a camera that was believed to be recording Yvonne McGlynn at her home. The musician was said to have carried out the stalking campaign including blocking their driveway and leaving threatening voicemails between October 2020 and September 2021. But the former Roller was allowed to walk free from the dock on Thursday (CORR) after a sheriff deserted the case due to the Crown not providing the defence team with all the required disclosure. Sheriff Peter McCormack was told this was the seventh time the Crown had brought the case to trial but had continually failed to supply the defence team with all the information they need. Solicitor Nigel Bruce told the court there had been 'a long-standing failure to provide disclosure by the Crown' and asked the sheriff to desert the case. Mr Bruce said: 'The fact is that this has had a really significant effect on my client. 'He is a musician and he has been invited to produce an album and to tour in Japan and that can't take place. 'This complaint is now approaching three years and the Crown have not complied with their legal obligations.' Sheriff McCormack said: 'This is the seventh trial diet to events said to have taken place between October 2020 and September 2021. 'It's a charge of stalking with various allegations. 'The Crown and the police have a statutory duty to disclose relevant material that they have accepted Mr Bruce has been asking for. 'Nothing has happened between the last trial diet in December and today and in these circumstances I am going uphold Mr Bruce's motion and desert the case simpliciter.' Speaking outside court, Pat admitted the case had taken a toll on his health but added he is delighted he can now get on with music career. He said: 'This case is all rubbish, my brother has caused me so much pain and suffering. 'My wife is ill because of it and I have had a heart attack due to this case – it's been a nightmare. 'I've been classed as a criminal due to these false allegations but now I'm cleared I can now get on with my life and go to Japan at Christmas. 'I've got a band together and I'm going to be touring and playing Bay City Roller classics like Shang-A-Lang and Bye Bye Baby as well as my own material. 'I've also got an album coming out called simply 'Pat McGlynn' and I'll be doing Roller classics on there too. 'I see Woody has done his own version of Shang-A-Lang but I'm going to show him how it's done properly.' Pat, a rhythm guitarist, joined the Bay City Rollers in 1976 replacing departing member Ian Mitchell before leaving the following year. He was also a member of the group between 1982 and 1985. In 1977, Pat released She'd Rather Be with Me which peaked at number 65 in Australia. He also had success with his own band Pat McGlynn's Scotties and wrote the song So Much Of Your Love sung by pop star Sonia in the British heat of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993. Scott opts for Sandown with Bay City Roller

George Scott has skipped the Prix du Jockey Club with Bay City Roller who will instead make his seasonal reappearance in the Star Sports Heron Stakes – ground permitting. The unbeaten Champagne Stakes winner was being initially aimed at the Irish 2,000 Guineas before he had his attentions switched to the French Derby. However, with warm weather in France and rain forecast in the UK, Scott feels he has better chance of getting more suitable conditions at Sandown on Thursday evening. 'We've been battling with the weather. Every time we make a plan for him it seems to dry up,' he said. 'We're very keen to run him on good ground at the fastest. So although they water very well in France, it looks a very warm build up to that race and we just thought it was sensible with the rain around to redirect to Sandown. 'We've got the impression that 10 furlongs isn't going to be a problem but where we are at, with the lack of opportunities at this stage of the season, we've had to go where the race is so he'll start off at a mile.' He added: 'I'm very happy with the horse, he's training as well as you could hope and he's in really good shape. He's a horse who has won at the track so we won't be looking for any excuses, put it that way.'

Newsboy's horse racing tips for Tuesday's five meetings including Nottingham NAP

On a busy Tuesday, Newsboy likes the look of newly gelding Godolphin challenger for his NAP and fancies another making her hurdles debut at Southwell KING'S CHARTER (3.32, NAP) can start to live up to his hefty price tag by getting off the mark at Nottingham today. Efforts in two hot maiden races last year were well up to par for this grade but trainer Charlie Appleby decided the €650,000 buy would have brighter prospects as a gelding. It has worked for stable star Rebel's Romance, who took his earnings to £10.6 million at York last week, and hopefully will do the trick for King's Charter. ‌ Last year he finished third in a race won by unbeaten Group 2 winner Bay City Roller and then fourth in a Newbury maiden stacked with talent. ‌ The first, second, third and fifth from that race have all scored since and King's Charter can complete the sequence. Over jumps at Southwell TAKTIQUE GAGNANTE (4.20, NB) can get off the mark for her new connections on hurdles debut. The mare was backed into morning favouritism for a Cheltenham Bumper last month but could only finish 16th of 18. Even that form would put her in the mix on her second start for Richard Newland and Jamie Insole but she is better judged on a promising third in a Cork bumper in January. At Huntingdon Flat winner NOISY JAZZ (6.40) can make a winning debut over hurdles for the James Owen stable. SELECTIONS

The two best mates who trained horses named after each other set to clash in fight for Group 1 glory

BEST pals George Scott and Charlie Fellowes could go head to head for Group 1 French Derby glory on June 1. The two handlers have long been buddies, and used to face-off in the George and Charlie: Off the Bridle podcast, although their last episode was in December of 2024. Come on, lads, time for another! Scott once trained a horse called Charlie Fellowes (wasn't too bad) and Fellowes the gelding George Scott (never won!). Now, Scott is primed to unleash the unbeaten Bay City Roller in the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, while Fellowes has the option of France or Epsom for Luther, with the latter becoming increasingly more likely. Bay City Roller, whose sire New Bay landed the 2015 Jockey Club, is unbeaten in three starts for Scott, winding up last season with success in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. The handler told me: "It's likely Bay City Roller will go to the Jockey Club with the ground unlikely to get any softer for the Irish 2000 Guineas. "His work has been suggesting recently that he is now working towards his pedigree - his dam won over a mile and a half. "I'm really pleased with him and he's definitely a horse who needs some cut in the ground. "I'm looking forward to getting him started. It's not ideal he's been off this long if you are going into a Classic you probably could do with a run. "But he's been to Chelmsford a couple of times and Sheikh Nasser (owner and yard sponsor under the banner Victorious Racing) is keen we try the French Derby route." Fellowes trained Luther to finish an admirable fourth in the French 2000 Guineas on the same day his Shes Perfect landed the French 1000, only to be disqualified in the stewards' room. Connections are appealing that decision. "Both horses have two options and they both couldn't have taken their races in France any better," reports Fellowes. "Shes Perfect lost a baffling four kilos for her journey over in a very tough race, which just shows her remarkable constitution. "Luther lost ten kilos which again is pretty good. They are both in full work and both cantering away. "Luther has the option of the French and English Derby. Straight after the race I was very much leaning towards the French Derby, but the longer I talk about it with the owners the more we sway towards the English Derby. "On pedigree being by Frankel out of a Musidora winner he should stay and he looked like he would stay in France. And, there is only one Derby. "As for Shes Perfect the decision is between the Prix de Diane (French Oaks) or the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. "She's by Sioux Nation but out of a Galileo mare and every time something comes to her in her races she picks up again. "If she was able to get out in front in a nice rhythm in France I think that could be the spot for her. "The Coronation will be an extremely hot race with Lake Victoria, Zarigana and Flight likely to go, so we are probably leaning towards France and we might have unfinished business there!" Good luck, lads. . Remember to gamble responsibly A responsible gambler is someone who:
