Crews return to Greater Manchester landmark after 'people spotted with barbecue' - days after major moor fire

Firefighters returned to a landmark Greater Manchester beauty spot after people were 'seen with a barbecue' days after a devastating moor fire. Smoke billowed from Holcombe Hill near to Peel Tower, in Bury, last Tuesday (May 13) after a fire broke out. Three teenagers were arrested on suspicion of arson and later bailed pending further enquiries. READ MORE: Family's double tragedy as second teenager killed five years after shooting READ MORE: Former Manchester United player, 19, died after quitting football in 'sudden' mood change The blaze left a large section of Holcombe Hill charred, while the area was already dry following the driest start to a year in the North West for almost a century. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has issued repeat warnings to the public in recent weeks, calling for care to be taken on the region's moors. But one week on from the Holcombe Hill fire, crews were called back to the site last night (May 20). Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service received a report of people having a barbecue in the area. Crews attended the scene at around 9pm, but fortunately were able to leave again 20 minutes later with no major incident taking place. Station manager Ady Taylor, the fire service's wildfire lead and national tactical adviser for wildfires, said last week: "We want people to enjoy the countryside and moorland we have in Greater Manchester, but our Be Moor Aware campaign, which runs throughout the summer, reminds people to always act responsibly while out enjoying these environments. "This means no barbecues, fires or fireworks - as they can easily result in wildfires. "Wildfires can spread quickly and cause devastation to the land and wildlife on it, so it's vitally important that people call 999 as soon as they think they see a fire." --- For the latest stories and breaking news visit Get the latest headlines, features and analysis that matter to you by signing up to our various Manchester Evening News newsletters here. Bradford moor BBQ ban to be extended as wildfire risk rises

An order banning the lighting of fires on open spaces in Bradford is set to be expanded in a bid to reduce the risk of moorland existing Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) restricting fireworks, camp fires, lanterns and barbecues on swathes of the district's public roaming land is due to run are now launching a consultation with locals, landowners and others and are hoping to impose another three-year order.A report due to be approved later this week said a blaze on Ilkley Moor in 2019 came "within 200m" of people's homes and wildfires remain a "consistent risk" in the district. The report to Bradford Council's regulatory panel said "a number of incidences of wildfire" had been recorded in the district ahead of the original banning order being put in."Many of [these] will have been the result of careless or negligent behaviour in respect of fires and barbecues, rather than deliberate arson," the report report noted no "serious" wildfire incidents had taken place in the district since the PSPO began but recognised "repeated large fires on Marsden Moor in Kirklees, one of which was the result of a firework. Cost of damage was estimated at close to £500,000".The PSPO allows police and other authorities to order people to surrender anything in their possession which could be used to light a fire. Offenders face a fixed penalty, summary conviction and fines totalling thousands of council said it was also launching a consultation with major landowners of other moorland areas within the Bradford district, for example Yorkshire Water, so that those could also be covered by the extended authority's Be Moor Aware campaign also continues to be a "valuable tool" in spreading these messages, it said. The tightening of rules in Bradford comes at a time when the fire service are putting out fresh warnings nationally about the increased risk of wildfires during the dryer summer months and their impact on to the National Fire Chiefs Council, the UK has seen 286 wildfires so far this said that was more than 100 above the number recorded during the same period in 2022, a year that saw record-breaking temperatures and wildfire activity, with incidents up a third in some parts of the wider Yorkshire and Humber region too.A six-week consultation on the PSPO extension is due to take place. The fire was the second to hit the moors near Blackstone Edge in less than 36 hours, after a blaze broke out on Wednesday afternoon (March 26). Further details about the cause of Thursday's fire are yet to be confirmed, but Greater Manchester Police does not believe it to be linked to Wednesday's fire, which is being investigated as arson. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: 'Shortly before 9:45pm yesterday evening (Thursday, March 27 2025) two fire engines from Rochdale and Bolton North Fire Stations were called to attend a fire on moorland near Blackstone Edge Reservoir, Littleborough. "Firefighters arrived quickly and worked alongside colleagues from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to extinguish large parts of the fire." Crews remained in attendance until around 7am today. A GMFRS spokesperson added: "Crews have now extinguished the fire and ensured no hot spots remain. "Firefighters were in attendance for approximately nine hours." A teenager was arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with Wednesday's fire at Blackstone Edge. GMP has been approached for an update. In a video message posted today following the two fires at Blackstone Edge, Greater Manchester firefighters said: "Wildfires cause serious damage to wildlife and use a lot of fire service resources to put out. "We want to remind you to act responsibly on the moors. No fires, no barbecues, no fireworks and no discarded cigarettes.
