Motivated Bears focused on MVC tourney

SPRINGFIELD, Mo–Joey Hawkins' Missouri State Bears worked out at Hammons Field after the Springfield Cardinals game Sunday. It was the first time MoState had thrown the ball around since Thursday. In our Bear Nation update, Missouri State had Friday's and Saturday's games at Murray State canceled because of wet field conditions. So, the Bears and Racers tied for the Valley regular season championship. But because of MoState's loss to Murray State, the Bears are the second seed. And Missouri State will play its first tourney game Wednesday night. Bears senior Nick Rodriguez says what happened in Murray, Kentucky will motivate them this week. 'We missed out on a chance to win the conference. At the same time, even though they're the one seed, they missed out on a chance to win the conference. And not be co-champions. It'll be cool if we get to see them in the tournament at some point. You know we set goals for ourselves at the beginning of the season. We wanted to win the conference. We wanted to play in a regional. And that's all right in front of us. We're kind of tunnel vision right now all on the conference championship. Just go out there and win it last time in the Valley,' said Rodriguez. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bears, Racers play two Saturday for MVC title

The two will play a double header on Saturday to wrap up the regular season. Late Thursday night, the Racers out-slugged the Bears 16 to 5. That victory moved the Racers into a first place tie with the Bears in the regular season Valley race. Missouri State needs to sweep Saturday's double header to lock down the top seed. Murray State can grab the number one seed with a split. The Valley tournament that starts next week in Normal, Illinois.
