Man wounded in Washington Square Park was stabbed with own knife, arrested

A 22-year-old man wounded during a fight in Washington Square Park was stabbed with his own knife during a crazed clash and has now been arrested, police said Wednesday. Marquese Haynes is facing menacing and weapons possession charges for allegedly whipping out a blade and threatening Keeshawn Grantnesbitt, also 22, during a stand off inside the iconic Greenwich Village park about 8:55 p.m. Monday. As the two fought, Haynes dropped the knife, which Grantnesbitt picked up and jammed into his stomach, cops said. Medics rushed Haynes to Bellevue Hospital with a minor wound. Both men live in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, according to cops. Grantnesbitt was arrested at the scene for misdemeanor assault and released without bail after a brief arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court. This was Grantnesbitt's first arrest, cops said. Haynes was charged once he was discharged from the hospital Tuesday morning. At his arraignment, a judge released him without bail, recommending he enroll in an alternative to incarceration program. If he graduates the program, the charges will be dropped. Haynes has been arrested twice before for domestic violence assaults, cops said.
