Premier League champion's transfer message to Ryan Reynolds leaves Wrexham in no doubt

Premier League champion's transfer message to Ryan Reynolds leaves Wrexham in no doubt A Premier League veteran who is due to become a free agent at the end of June has admitted he would be interested in talking to newly-promoted Wrexham about a potential move Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have received a come-and-get-me plea from Asmir Begovic (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images ) Former Premier League champion Asmir Begovic has made an appeal to Wrexham as they gear up for Championship football. Since being bought by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in February 2021, the Welsh outfit have enjoyed a rapid rise from the National League to the second tier, with three consecutive promotions. As the Hollywood duo inch closer to realising their ambition of lifting Wrexham into the Premier League, there's been speculation about several high-profile signings this summer. ‌ Notable names like Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, Tottenham and Wales defender Ben Davies, and Fulham skipper Tom Cairney have all been touted as potential arrivals at the Racecourse Ground, with West Ham's Danny Ings and Aaron Cresswell also in the mix. ‌ Ex-Chelsea goalkeeper Begovic has now thrown his hat into the ring to join Wrexham ahead of their first stint in the Championship in 43 years. The 38-year-old, who clinched the title with Chelsea in 2017, is on the cusp of becoming a free agent as his Everton contract ends later this month, with an extension ruled out by the Merseyside club. The experienced Bosnian keeper expressed his willingness to join the Red Dragons in their quest for further glory. "Wrexham is a really interesting project, both on the pitch and everything that comes with it," he told Fruity King. "I like working with good people and having watched the documentary, the owners seem like amazing guys. "That is the sort of club I'd love to work with and the idea of Wrexham really interests me. If it's the right situation for everyone then who knows, it's an exciting project." Wrexham already have a solid first-choice goalkeeper in Arthur Okonkwo, an Arsenal academy product. But Begovic's wealth of experience could be invaluable, following an impressive tally of 256 Premier League games across spells at clubs like Portsmouth, Stoke City, Chelsea, Bournemouth and Everton. ‌ He also clocked up substantial game time with Queens Park Rangers in the Championship during the 2023/24 season, appearing 46 times for the west London side in various competitions. Reflecting on his departure from his second stretch at Everton, Begovic conceded that discussions were brief. "They wanted to change direction a bit and bring in new blood," he told The Athletic. "For me, it was easy. No hard feelings. You respect the decision. We gave it everything and shook hands, having done our job. That's what makes it something you look back on with some fondness." Since signing in July 2021, the 30-year-old has become pivotal for the team, netting 110 goals. However, his standing took a hit under Phil Parkinson during the latter half of last season due to a dip in form in League One. Mullin found himself sidelined from the team, making only a single appearance after the January transfer window, as Parkinson brought on board Reading forward Sam Smith and Burnley's Jay Rodriguez. In a recent interview featured in the Welcome to Wrexham documentary on Disney+, Mullin expressed his disappointment over the manager's decision. The Liverpudlian is now set to join Wigan in the third tier, aiming to rejuvenate his career following back surgery last summer.

'I won the Premier League at Chelsea, I'd love to join Ryan Reynolds at Wrexham'

A Premier League title winner with Chelsea says he would 'love' to sign for Wrexham AFC as their Hollywood fairytale continues. The Welsh club has enjoyed a meteoric rise up the English football pyramid after it was bought by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020. Their exploits on the pitch and the exposure from documentary series Welcome to Wrexham has also given the team a huge global fanbase. Next season they will play in the Championship and many believe it is not a case of if but when they will be promoted to the Premier League. Their promotion to the second-tier has seen them linked with a number of high-profile players and a former Chelsea star has openly admitted he would love to be a part of Wrexham's story. 'Wrexham is a really interesting project, both on the pitch and everything that comes with it,' Asmir Begovic told Fruity King. 'I like working with good people and having watched the documentary, the owners seem like amazing guys. That is the sort of club I'd love to work with and the idea of Wrexham really interests me. 'If it's the right situation for everyone then who knows, it's an exciting project.' Begovic is a veteran of English football, making 256 Premier League appearances for Portsmouth, Stoke City, Chelsea, Bournemouth and Everton, and has just been released by the Toffees. The Bosnian goalkeeper made 33 appearances in two seasons for the Blues as understudy to Thibaut Courtois, helping the club win their last Premier League title in 2017 and reach the FA Cup final that same year. 'I'm on the lookout for a new club because I want to keep playing, I still feel amazing and I've got plenty left in the tank,' the 38-year-old continued. 'My Everton exit didn't come as a surprise. It wasn't a long-term solution and everybody understood the situation. I really enjoyed my time at the club. I think you just get to a stage of your career when you are thinking about your family and what is best for them. It's about finding a solution that fits us all.' Ipswich – 5/4 Southampton – 7/4 Sheffield United – 21/10 Birmingham – 23/10 Coventry, Middlesbrough – 7/2 Wrexham – 11/2 Odds courtesy of Betfair Arsenal academy graduate Arthur Okonkwo is Wrexham's current No.1 keeper though a player of Begovic's profile and experience would in theory only benefit the squad. The Red Dragons had been linked with signing Jamie Vardy on a free but the Leicester City legend isn't interested. They are however reportedly close to loaning in Liverpool youngster Owen Beck with the left-back to be available once Arne Slot secures the £40million transfer of Milos Kerkez. Premier League: Ashley Young, Asmir Begovic Set For Everton Exits

Last Updated: Veteran Young, goalie Begovic and Joao Virginia will leave Everton when their contracts expire at the end of the season. Everton have confirmed that Ashley Young and goalkeepers Asmir Begovic and Joao Virginia will be leaving the Club when their contracts expire at the end of the season next month. Manager David Moyes said, 'Since my return to the club, I've seen what a great professional Ash is and know the leadership qualities he has brought to the squad during his time at Everton. His versatility, experience, and know-how have also been really beneficial to the team and me. 'Asmir and Joao have also worked really hard and conducted themselves impeccably. On behalf of everyone at the Club, I want to thank all three players for their service, and we wish them all the very best for the future," he said. Young joined the Blues in July 2023, with his experience, leadership, and versatility proving invaluable over the past two seasons. Ahead of Sunday's last-ever Premier League match at Goodison Park, Young has made 68 appearances for Everton across several positions, scoring goals against Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Begovic returned to Everton last summer, having previously spent two years with the Blues between 2021-2023, and has made 10 appearances for the Club across those two spells. Virginia signed for Everton from Arsenal in August 2018, and the 25-year-old has since made a total of eight appearances for the Men's Senior Team. Both goalkeepers have provided important competition and support for Jordan Pickford during their time with the Blues. 'This is a complicated situation in many respects, with so many players out of contract this summer. It's important to me to speak with all of those players, individually, to give them clarity on their situations," Moyes added. 'Lots of factors influence our decision-making, and we're currently working through that process with the players, which takes time. Some will have clarity by the end of this week, and for others, it may get to next week, but it's important that it's handled in the right way. 'We also have five players on loan, and we will let them know their situations in due course," he added. First Published: May 17, 2025, 21:01 IST
