Bemidji Middle School, Broten earn invites to state MathCounts competition

Mar. 1—THIEF RIVER FALLS — Bemidji Middle School, St. Philip's Catholic School and homeschool students from Broten Academy and Fowler Academy had a strong showing at the 2025 regional MathCounts competition on Feb. 7 at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls. Eight teams comprised of 52 students in grades 6-8 went through four rounds of math problem-solving aiming to sharpen these skills. The first round, "Target," consists of eight problems handed out in pairs and students being given six minutes to answer each pair. The second round, "Sprint," involves 30 problems and lasts 40 minutes. "Team," the third round, allows teams to sit together and talk through 10 problems in 20 minutes. The top 12 individuals compete in the final round, "Countdown," where one question at a time is shown on a screen. When a student thinks they know the answer, they raise their hand and give their answer. Trophies were awarded based on "small school" and "large school" categories with Bemidji Middle School receiving second place in the large school category. The top 10 individuals also received awards including BMS students Nicolas Licata, Alaina O'Beirne and Annabelle Weseloh earning first, eighth and tenth place respectively. Broten Academy's Elihu Broten earned third place while Fowler Academy's Elias Fowler received ninth. BMS as a team and Broten as an individual qualify for the state tournament, which takes place on Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8, in Plymouth, Minn. State winners will then compete in a national competition in May. Other schools that competed included Kittson Central, Crookston, Fertile-Beltrami, Franklin Middle School and Red Lake Public School. The competition was sponsored locally by the Lake Agassiz Chapter of the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers and nationally by the National Society of Professional Engineers.
