Schoolboy rugby rankings: How many changes would you make?
This past weekend there was a general consensus that Paarl Boys' High epic comeback win over rivals Paarl Gimnasium had served to see them leapfrog their local rivals to claim the 'unofficial' No 1 First XV rugby ranking. It was a marquee fixture during an action-packed weekend of schoolboy rugby, and it has made for some interesting reading as various versions and predictions have done the rounds in an attempt to pinpoint where the top schoolboy rugby sides would sit on a rankings list. The simple fact of the matter is that there is NO possible way of accurately determining a definitive list – and every rankings list is subjective at best – but this article serves as our call to action for you to let us know where you think teams should be truly placed on this list. Below is our attempt at an updated, unofficial 'official' First XV Top 20 rankings list after the weekend's matches, but … here is our question to you: Let us know by leaving a comment at the end of this article, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Schools rugby fixtures: Paarl derby one of the biggest games of the year
Other big fixtures include Jeppe against KES, Waterkloof against Affies, and Grey High taking on Grey College. One of the most important school rugby fixtures plays out this weekend as Paarl Gim host Paarl Boys High. Paarl Gim have been unstoppable at the top of the schools rugby table this year, going unbeaten in 15 games. Their neighbours lie second and will want to carry momentum from their 51–8 win over SACS last weekend into this fixture. Especially as they lost 30–8 in the derby last year. But this is just one of the four King Price Schools Derby Series matches playing out. Jeppe High School for Boys' take on King Edward VII (KES) in a Joburg rivalry while Waterkloof host Affies in a Pretoria derby. In the Eastern Cape, Grey High School take on Grey College. However, Dale College's fixture against Graeme College may be an even larger game. Vossies hosts innovative u/14 hockey tournament
TZANEEN – Ben Vorster High School brought young hockey talent to the forefront during the recent school holidays, hosting its own u/14 hockey tournament, the RAM Ben Vorster Friendship Festival, from April 2 to 5. The festival saw six visiting schools, HTS Middelburg, Monument High School, Zwartkop High School, Ligbron High School, Lydenburg High School, and Curro Nelspruit, join the Vossies for a competitive week of full-length matches. The primary goal of the festival was to provide young players with valuable match experience under pressure in a structured, competitive format. According to organisers, it also served as an opportunity to build connections with other top hockey schools in the country. What set the festival apart were its unique rules, designed to add excitement and strategic variety to the games. Two special cards, the orange and pink cards, were introduced. The orange card allowed a team to remove an opposing player from the field for two and a half minutes, while the pink card doubled the value of any goals scored during that same time frame. These twists were well-received and added a dynamic edge to the matches. Ben Vorster's boys' team emerged as champions of the festival, while the girls' team secured a strong second-place finish. Ligbron High School's boys finished in second place, and HTS Middelburg's girls claimed the top spot in the girls' division.
