Farrell keeps it in the family with Lions captaincy

Coach Andy Farrell has named his son Owen to captain the British and Irish Lions against the First Nations and Pasifika XV in Melbourne on Tuesday. Playing his 20th match for the Lions on his fourth tour, Farrell will lead the Lions for the first time as the tourists turn out at Marvel Stadium in the last of their six tour matches. It's his first start since being drafted into the 2025 squad late as injury cover, with the 33-year-old coming off the bench in the Lions' one-sided win over the AUNZ invitational XV in Adelaide. The Lions are 6-0 on their Australian tour, including a 27-19 victory over the Wallabies in the first Test at Brisbane last Saturday. Backrower Ben Earl and inside backs Alex Mitchell and Marcus Smith have been included in the reserves three days after being involved in the 23-man squad for the first Test. Former England captain Farrell will partner Irishman Jamie Osborne in the centres while Scotland No.9 Ben White will combine with England's Fin Smith in the halves. Blair Kinghorn will return from a knee injury to play fullback in an all-Scotland back three with wingers Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe. Welsh blindside flanker Jac Morgan will start, as will exciting young England No.8 Henry Pollock. Ireland centre Garry Ringrose has overcome concussion symptoms to take a spot on the bench. Jamie George will start at hooker after joining the tour group from Argentina after playing with England. Three other Scottish reinforcements -- lock Gregor Brown, hooker Ewan Ashman and prop Rory Sutherland - were named on the bench. Wallabies veteran Kurtley Beale will captain the inaugural First Nations and Pasifika team. Andy Farrell said the match would give all players a chance to push their case for selection for the final two Tests, the second of which comes on Saturday night at the MCG. "The coaches' minds are open when it comes to selection, they have to be with so many players performing and pushing for places," Farrell said in a statement "This fixture gives players another opportunity to put their hand up for selection for the final two Tests. "This group know the level of performance that we will require against a First Nations and Pasifika team that is packed with talent and power." ‘That's Henry Cavill' – Arsenal fans stunned by Kai Havertz's body transformation as new pic of ‘jacked' striker emerges

ARSENAL fans have likened Kai Havertz to SUPERMAN after spotting his jacked body transformation. The German star returned for the final two games of the season after spending three months out with a hamstring injury. 3 Havertz netted 15 goals in 36 appearances as Arsenal finished second in the Premier League for a third consecutive season. He now looks set for more competition in the attack after the Gunners agreed to sign Sporting Lisbon No9 Viktor Gyokeres for £63.5million. Gyokeres, 27, was on course to move to North London after scoring an incredible 97 goals across the past two seasons - but it's at risk of collapsing over Sporting's bonus demands. And Havertz, 26, appears ready to battle for the starting role up top at the Emirates after hitting the gym this summer. Fans were left stunned from a new snap showing Havertz enjoying a spot of lunch with team-mate Ben White at Arsenal's training ground. One joked: "Wham-vertz 👀." A second added: "That's Henry Cavill." British actor Cavill gained worldwide recognition for portraying Superman in the DC Extended Universe. 3 3 Join SUN CLUB for the Arsenal Files every Friday plus While another replied: "Havertz looks like a rugby player." A third said: "Boy became a man. What a unit." One more wrote: "Havertz clearly means business this year." SPORTS DESK_EP29_V3 Havertz recently shared pictures from a workout to his Instagram alongside the caption: "Loading". The striker and wife Sophia welcomed their first child in March. He first joined Arsenal from Chelsea in 2023 as an attacking midfielder but has moved into the striker role under Mikel Arteta. Even though he finished as their top scorer in the league last season on nine goals, there is a sense the Gunners need more firepower. Noni Madueke is also heading to the Emirates from Chelsea in a £52m move, with Eberechi Eze another target. Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga have already signed for Arsenal as they bid to win silverware next season. The Premier League runners-up kickstart their bid to win a first league title in 21 years away at Manchester United on August 17.

Farrell makes tour debut as Lions thrash Australia-New Zealand XV

Scrum-half Ben White got on the scoresheet for the British and Irish Lions against a Australia and New Zealand Invitational XV rugby union Owen Farrell made his tour debut from the bench and Duhan van der Merwe bagged a hat-trick of tries as a polished British and Irish Lions crushed a combined Australia-New Zealand side 48-0 on Saturday. The thumping eight-try romp at Adelaide Oval was their fifth consecutive win to ensure an unblemished record heading into the first test against the Wallabies next weekend in Brisbane. "Delighted, we did everything we set out before the game," said Tadhg Beirne, who captained in place of the rested Maro Itoje. "We fronted up, the ruck was really good again today and the most pleasing is to keep them to zero. That's huge for our defense and it gives us a massive confidence boost going into next week." Up 17-0 at half-time, the Lions controlled the contest and were swift at the breakdown showing plenty of attacking flair in their most cohesive and accurate performance of the tour so far. The victory was soured by an injury to hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie, who was stretchered off after what appeared to be a nasty knee to the head, although he recovered enough to return to the bench later. Farrell, a veteran of three previous Lions tours, came on 10 minutes into the second half after being controversially called up to replace Elliot Daly, who broke his arm against Queensland Reds. It was his first game in two months after a challenging season with French side Racing 92, but the former England captain quickly blew away any cobwebs playing at inside centre. By the time he arrived the damage had been done, with tries from Van der Merwe, Ben White, and Sione Tuipulotu overwhelming the ragtag invitational team under the guidance of incoming Wallabies coach Les Kiss. It was the first time rugby powerhouses Australia and New Zealand had joined forces since 1989, but they barely had a week's preparation. "They put us under pressure with the aerial game and competed well, they are a big force," Australia and New Zealand co-captain David Havili said of the Lions. "I'm proud of the way the boys came together. It was about connection for us and I loved the way the Aussie boys and Kiwi boys just gelled." Their weaknesses were exploited by a Lions side knowing it was their last chance to impress head coach Andy Farrell before he picks his test 23 for Brisbane. Ireland's Hugo Keenan put up his hand to be test full-back with an accomplished effort in place of main rival Blair Kinghorn who is nursing an injured knee. Jac Morgan excelled at openside flanker as did Henry Pollock at blindside as the fight for back-row spots heats up. Scottish duo Tuipulotu and Huw Jones were slick again in their battle with Irish pair Bundee Aki and Garry Ringrose to be starting centers. The Lions showed plenty of early intent and caught the hosts napping when Keenan cleverly took a quick lineout and Van der Merwe powered over in the corner. A second try, this one converted, came minutes later when a gap was opened by the ruck and scrum-half White hit the accelerator to dart through under the posts. It was the type of start the Lions have been striving for all tour and they surged 17-0 clear after 20 minutes when Van der Merwe grabbed his second, finishing a flowing move that split the defense. The home side needed to begin the second-half well, but were rocked by a Lions try in the opening minutes when Tuipulotu hit the line to perfection after a tap and go from White. With a 24-0 lead, it was all over bar Farrell's cameo and there were further tries from lock Scott Cummings, Van der Merwe, hooker Ronan Kelleher and Pollock. © 2025 AFP

Live Lions v AUNZ XV: Score and latest updates from Adelaide

Debutant and injury replacement Ben White will form an intriguing half-back axis with so far inconsistent Fin Smith. If Smith performs to his high standards, he will put teammates into space with his excellent vision. In the forwards, Ben Earl and Henry Pollock will run all day, every carry having line-busting potential. They are backed up by the dogged work rate of Jac Morgan. The front row who are scrapping for positions in the test team will look to dominate at scrum time and provide the hard yards in attack. Alex Mitchell and Marcus Smith will surely provide electricity off the bench, whilst everyone watching will be eager to learn what sort of form Owen Farrell is in. It is difficult to asses how the Invitational XV will perform, but expect plenty of ambition and physicality, especially from their international standard back row.
