Police notice to Sonu Nigam over alleged comments on Kannada songs

Bengaluru: Avalahalli police in Bengaluru Rural district on Monday issued a notice to Mumbai-based playback singer Sonu Nigam , asking him to appear before the investigating officer next week. Last Saturday, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Nigam on charges of hurting the sentiments of Kannadigas by comparing the request for Kannada songs to the Pahalgam massacre . The incident took place during an event at a private college at Hirandahalli in Bidarahalli. A set of audience members demanded Nigam sing Kannada songs, to which the singer reportedly reacted: "Similar attitude resulted in the Pahalgam incident." CK Baba, superintendent of police, Bengaluru Rural, said they directed Sonu Nigam to appear before police next week. "The legal notice will reach him in a couple of days, and he's given ample time to appear before us," he said. Meanwhile, another officer said they summoned the organisers of the event to Avalahalli police station. "They are expected anytime. We will take details of the event and the incident from them. Also, we have sent the copy of the video showing Nigam making the alleged comments to the forensic science laboratory for authentication," he said.

Lingayat, Vokkaliga functionaries push to scrap state caste census, back Centre's count

Bengaluru: With the Centre announcing a national caste census , Karnataka's politically influential Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities are mounting pressure on the Siddaramaiah govt to scrap the contentious state caste census . They are also preparing cadres to ensure better enumeration in the central exercise. The communities have expressed dissatisfaction with the socio-economic and educational survey — commonly called the caste census — commissioned by the Siddaramaiah govt in 2015. They allege that their populations have been significantly undercounted, which could directly affect their share of reservation. The caste census report remains with the state govt. A special cabinet meeting called on April 17 ended without a decision. A second meeting was postponed twice, with the latest now set for Friday. With the Centre's census now in play, officials say the upcoming session would be a regular cabinet meeting, although the caste census will be on the agenda. "The caste census report would also be discussed along with the other issues on the agenda," said HK Patil, law and parliamentary affairs minister. "While there is no dispute about the socio-economic-educational aspect of the report, some communities have expressed concerns about the size of their population. These aspects would be discussed with the intention of ensuring justice for all communities." Tensions have escalated after senior Lingayat representative and Shamanur Shivashankarappa, also Davanagere South MLA, criticised his own party's govt. "Lingayats are hoping to get justice from the central census as the state census had projected their population around 65 lakh when in reality it's more than 2 crore," he said. However, Siddaramaiah has held firm, stating he will use the state caste census findings to frame the next state budget. Forest minister Khandre said: "We have taken note of all these developments that took place after the Centre announced the national caste census. We Lingayat ministers met last week and discussed the issue. We are committed to safeguarding the interest of our community. We will air our views in the cabinet meeting." Lingayat functionaries also plan to urge their community to list themselves as 'Veerashaiva-Lingayat' in the central census, though a section prefers dropping the 'Veerashaiva' prefix. Vokkaliga representatives are following suit. The Vokkaligara Sangha has engaged experts to guide its community through the central census process. "We want the state caste census scrapped... We will plan an awareness programme on the central census," said B Kenchappa Gowda, president, Vokkaligara Sangha.

Teenage delivery agent murdered in Bengaluru, ex-lover's cousin among five held

Bengaluru: A 19-year-old delivery agent was allegedly abducted and brutally murdered by a group of five men following his failed relationship with a student, police said Sunday. Preetham R, from Prashanth Nagar in Devanahalli town, was employed by an online grocery firm on Sulibele Road. Authorities have apprehended five suspects in connection with the murder: Srikanth, Shiva Kumar, Charan, Sanjay, and Kaushik. The suspects are aged 22-25 years and reside at Gantiganahalli and neighbouring areas. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru According to the investigators, Preetham had previously been in a relationship with a 21-year-old woman pursuing a bachelor's degree in Ayurveda. The relationship had deteriorated over time, resulting in the young woman distancing herself from Preetham. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fast, Reliable and Cheap Managed Cloud Web Hosting Service Degree Online | Search Ads Learn More Undo "Preetham was apparently unable to accept the termination of the relationship and made repeated attempts to reconnect with the young woman," a senior police officer said. "These persistent efforts were perceived as harassment by the woman, who informed her family members about the situation." Among those alerted was Srikanth, the woman's cousin, who alongside his friends reportedly confronted Preetham about his behaviour. Despite warnings, Preetham allegedly continued his pursuit. Police indicated that Srikanth and his accomplices forcibly removed Preetham from the vicinity of his workplace around 10.30pm May 2 and stuffed him into a vehicle. What followed was a horrific two-hour ordeal during which the victim was driven to multiple locations while being subjected to assault. "The suspects admitted to repeatedly striking the victim with their fists and feet while inside the moving vehicle. They also stopped at an isolated location to continue the assault. The violence was particularly concentrated on the victim's facial area, resulting in severe disfigurement," an investigating officer said. When Preetham eventually lost consciousness, the assailants, reportedly realising the gravity of their actions, abandoned his body near the govt primary school at Neeragantipalya village, Devanahalli. Preetham's father, Ramachandra H, visited his son's office around 6am Saturday as his son, whose shift would end at 3am, had not returned home. He learned about the abduction from his son's colleagues. During the search for his son, Ramachandra received information about an unidentified body discovered near Neeragantipalya. "The family had difficulty in identifying Preetham due to the extensive facial injuries," a police official said. Preetham's body was found by around 7.15am, after which Ramachandra filed a formal complaint. Ramachandra's complaint also alleged that this was not the first violent encounter between his son and the suspects, claiming that Srikanth and his associates had physically assaulted Preetham around five days before the fatal incident. All five suspects were taken into custody Sunday evening. Police said they were labourers engaged in various occupations. "They are currently being held for further questioning as the investigation continues. We are working to establish a complete timeline of events and determine the precise circumstances that led to this tragic outcome," a senior officer said.
