Sonu Nigam Apologises For Remarks At Bengaluru Concert: 'My Love Is Bigger Than My Ego'
Sonu Nigam's apology has come just hours after he posted a detailed account of the incident. Sonu Nigam has apologised for his remarks at his recent Bengaluru concert after facing immense backlash. Just hours after posting a clarification on Instagram, the singer has taken to the social media site again and issued an apology. Sonu said that his love for Karnataka is not bigger than his ego. Sonu Nigam wrote, 'Sorry Karnataka. My love for you is bigger than my ego. Love you always." This comes hours after Sonu had issued a clarification amid the controversy. In his statement, Sonu Nigam said that he has always extended deep respect and affection toward the language, culture, music, and musicians, not only of Karnataka but across the globe. He shared that he holds his Kannada songs in especially high regard, even more than his Hindi repertoire. Nigam added that he consistently prepares an over-an-hour-long set of Kannada songs whenever he performs in the state. However, Nigam alleged that during the concert, he was 'humiliated" by a fan and even 'threatened" by an individual young enough to be his son. For the unversed, the controversy stems from an incident on April 25, 2025, at East Point College, where the singer allegedly refused to perform a Kannada song upon a fan's request and referenced the Pahalgam terror attack during his response. Following the incident, the Bengaluru District Police took cognisance of an FIR lodged against Sonu Nigam on May 3 for allegedly 'making hurtful remarks about the Kannadiga community." A formal notice was issued to the singer, directing him to appear before the investigating officer within a week to respond to the allegations. Meanwhile, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has announced that the Kannada film industry (commonly referred to as Sandalwood) will not engage with Sonu Nigam in any capacity for future projects. Sonu Nigam Breaks Silence On FIR, Police Notice Over Controversial Bengaluru Remark
Last Updated: Sonu Nigam clarified his comments after backlash from a Bengaluru concert where he allegedly refused a Kannada song request and referenced the Pahalgam terror attack. Renowned playback singer Sonu Nigam has issued a formal clarification following widespread backlash over his recent comments at a concert in Bengaluru. The controversy stems from an incident on April 25, 2025, at East Point College, where the singer allegedly refused to perform a Kannada song upon a fan's request and referenced the Pahalgam terror attack during his response. In the wake of the incident, the Avalahalli Police issued a formal notice to Nigam, summoning him to appear for an inquiry within a week. Responding to the growing uproar, Nigam posted a detailed statement on Monday, breaking his silence and offering his version of the events. In his statement, Sonu Nigam said that he has always extended deep respect and affection toward the language, culture, music, and musicians, not only of Karnataka but across the globe. He shared that he holds his Kannada songs in especially high regard, even more than his Hindi repertoire. Nigam added that he consistently prepares over an hour-long set of Kannada songs whenever he performs in the state. However, Nigam alleged that during the concert, he was 'humiliated" by a fan and even 'threatened" by an individual young enough to be his son. He wrote, 'I am not a young lad to take humiliation from anyone. I am 51 years old, in the second half of my life and am entitled to take offence for someone as young as my son threatening me directly in front of thousands in the name of language that too Kannada which is my second language when it comes to my work. That too after my first song of the concert! He provoked a few more. Their own people were embarrassed and were asking them to shut up." Sonu Nigam stated that he initially responded 'politely and lovingly" to the fan's request, assuring them that the concert had just begun and that he would 'not let them down." Despite his reassurance, he claimed the individuals were 'hell-bent on creating a ruckus" and began 'threatening him wildly." 'Tell me who is at fault?" Nigam questioned, adding, 'Being a patriot that I am, I loathe anyone trying to create hate in the name of language, caste or religion especially after what transpired in Pahalgam." He said that 'thousands of students and teachers cheered' him when he schooled them. Addressing it, Sonu ended the note with, 'I leave it upto the sensible people of Karnataka to decide who is at fault here. I will accept your verdict gracefully. I fully respect and trust the law agencies and Police of Karnataka and will comply with whatever is expected from me. I have received divine love from Karnataka and will cherish it always with no malice whatsoever irrespective of your verdict." An FIR was registered on April 27, 2025, based on a complaint filed by the pro-Kannada organisation Karnataka Rakshana Vedike. The complaint accuses Sonu Nigam of making remarks that allegedly promoted enmity between linguistic groups. In addition to summoning the singer, the police have stated that they are also in the process of issuing a notice to the organisers of the event where the incident took place. The FIR has been registered under section 352 (intentional insults intended to provoke a breach of peace). Meanwhile, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has announced that the Kannada film industry (commonly referred to as Sandalwood) will not engage with Sonu Nigam in any capacity for future projects. The Chamber stressed that this is not a formal 'ban," citing potential legal complications under the Competition Commission of India. Instead, the decision is being termed as 'non-cooperation." The controversy erupted when Sonu Nigam, during his performance, slammed a fan for allegedly rudely requesting a Kannada song. In his remarks, he compared the mindset of the fan to that of the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam attack. Sonu Nigam called the demand 'rudely threatening" and said, 'Mujhe accha nahi laga ki waha ek ladka jiski umar, jitni uske umar nahi hogi use pehle toh main Kannada gaane garaha hoon. He was so rudely threatening me, 'Kannada, Kannada'. Yahi kaaran hai, Pahalgam mein jo hua hai na? Yahi kaaran hai jo karrahe ho, jo kiya tha na abhi? Dekho toh kaun saamne khada hai. I love Kannadigas, I love you guys. Main puri duniya mein jaha bhi jata hoon, main humesha bolta hoon main, sabko bolta hoon main…14,000 ki audience hog usme ek awaaz aati hai, 'Kannada'. Toh main unke liye, us ek Kannadiga k liye main kuch line Kannadiga k gaata hoon. Main itni izzat karta hoon aapki, itna pyaar karta hoon. So thoda sa rehna chahiye, aesa nahi karna chahiye aapko." The comments were widely condemned by the Kannada-speaking community. First Published:

Earlier this week, Nigam responded to the controversy, saying he had no intention to hurt anyone and was only performing. The singer took to social media to explain that a group of four to five individuals had caused disturbance during his event by shouting and threatening him to sing in Kannada. In a self-made video posted on his Instagram handle, Sonu Nigam said, "There were only 4-5 goons who were shouting. In fact, thousands of people were stopping them. I remember the girls were shouting at them, 'Don't disturb the scene.' And it was very important to remind them that no one asked for the language when the pants were taken off in the Pahalgam incident... Kannadigas are very nice people. Don't think there's any wave or movement; there are always a few bad people everywhere. I'm sure of it."
