Op Sindoor success linked to Bengaluru's innovation: PM Modi
Bengaluru, Aug 10 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today emphasised Bengaluru's critical role in India's Defence technology and the Make in India mission, linking the city's vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth to the success of Operation Sindoor. The operation, which involved striking terrorist camps deep inside enemy territory and swiftly overpowering Pakistan's forces, has been hailed as a demonstration of India's growing military prowess powered by indigenous technology and innovation. Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line and the foundation laying of Phase 3, PM Modi praised the contributions of Karnataka's youth to Defence manufacturing and technology, underlining how Bengaluru is emerging as a crucial hub not only for IT but also for high-end Defence production. He called upon Karnataka's talent pool to lead the vision of an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) in the tech sector. "The success of Operation Sindoor is a testament to the strength of our technology and Defence capabilities built on the foundation of Make in India,' said the Prime Minister. 'Bengaluru's youth and Karnataka's industrial ecosystem have played a major role in this achievement.' The Prime Minister described Bengaluru as a city deeply rooted in tradition and culture but simultaneously poised at the forefront of progress and innovation. He paid tribute to the city's founder, Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, highlighting his vision of a city that balances heritage with development. On the urban infrastructure front, PM Modi inaugurated the much-awaited Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro, which will connect critical areas from RV Road to Bommasandra, easing travel for millions and enhancing connectivity between important residential and business hubs. He also laid the foundation stone for Phase 3 of the metro which includes the Orange Line, expected to serve 2.5 million daily passengers, further strengthening Bengaluru's public transport network. In a major boost to regional and national connectivity, the Prime Minister flagged off three new Vande Bharat Express trains. The Bengaluru-Belagavi route, in particular, is expected to significantly bolster trade and tourism between Karnataka's commercial centers. Additional trains running between Nagpur-Pune and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Amritsar will serve millions of passengers, including pilgrims, fostering greater integration and economic activity. Detailing India's impressive economic growth trajectory, PM Modi noted that over the past 11 years, the country has risen from the world's 10th largest economy to the top 5 and is rapidly advancing towards becoming a top 3 economy. This growth is attributed to relentless reforms and transformational initiatives such as expanding metro rail networks from just 5 cities in 2014 to 24 cities today, creating more than 1,000 kilometers of metro lines — now the third largest metro network globally. The Prime Minister also drew attention to India's achievements in expanding its railway electrification, airport infrastructure, and national waterways, noting a doubling of electrified rail routes and an increase in airports from 74 to over 160. The number of operational national waterways has grown from 3 to 30, providing enhanced multimodal transport options. On social infrastructure, PM Modi highlighted the expansion of health and education facilities, with the number of AIIMS institutions growing from 7 to 22 and medical colleges from 387 to 704, adding over 100,000 new medical seats, greatly benefiting the middle class and aspiring youth. The number of IITs and IIITs has also significantly increased, broadening access to higher education. He further noted the government's push to improve quality of life by constructing over 40 million pucca houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and building over 120 million toilets, enhancing dignity, hygiene, and safety, particularly for women across the country. Digital transformation was another key focus, with PM Modi citing India's leadership in digital payments via UPI, which handles over 50 percent of the world's real-time transactions. More than 2,200 government services are now available on mobile platforms, and initiatives like the UMANG app and DigiLocker have simplified citizens' access to government services and documents. India is also investing in emerging technologies such as AI-powered threat detection and aiming for global leadership in AI and space technology, including the development of a Made-in-India chip. Calling for stronger emphasis on technological self-reliance, the Prime Minister urged Karnataka and Bengaluru's tech industry to prioritize the development of high-quality, zero-defect, zero-impact products that maintain environmental standards. He emphasized that innovation and manufacturing must go hand-in-hand to sustain India's growth story. In governance, PM Modi praised ongoing reforms, such as the decriminalization of certain laws and the introduction of competency-based training programs for government employees under Mission Karmayogi. He encouraged state governments to identify and remove outdated criminal provisions and adopt new learning frameworks to enhance administrative efficiency. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Karnataka, through collaborative efforts between the central and state governments and active citizen participation, would reach new heights of development and contribute significantly to the vision of a developed India. Western Railway to equip Mumbai locals with Kavach: Indigenous system to replace AWS; all 1,400 suburban trains to be covered by next year
Representative image The Western Railway is planning to install Kavach, an indigenous anti-collision system, on its Mumbai local trains by late next year, enhancing safety for millions of commuters on one of the world's busiest suburban networks. Kavach, developed as part of the ' Make in India ' programme, is an advanced electronic system currently being deployed on the Delhi-Mumbai corridor and other main routes. This domestically engineered Automatic Train Protection system will supersede the current Auxiliary Warning System. The new system will automatically regulate train speeds, prevent accidents, and maintain safe operations despite potential human errors, according to officials on Sunday, reported news agency PTI. Also read: PM Modi to inaugurate Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line– all you need to know about the project The Western Railway operates over 1,400 suburban services daily between Churchgate-Virar-Dahanu, utilising 110 electrical multiple units and serving more than 30 lakh passengers daily. The existing AWS provides audio alerts to drivers about upcoming signals, whilst monitoring speed and assisting with braking, as explained by an official. "The AWS panel in the motorman's cab has an alarm, a vigilance button, and red, yellow, or blue lights. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo If the alarm sounds, the motorman must press the button within four seconds, or the brakes will activate and stay locked until the train stops completely," he said. Railway officials note that AWS has limitations in preventing crucial safety incidents like Signal Passed at Danger and signal jumping. They indicate that its restricted automation and dependence on manual intervention reduces its capability to prevent potential accidents. Officials confirmed that Kavach surpasses AWS with its sophisticated features designed for collision prevention, train movement management and signal system compliance. The technology enables constant communication between trains and signal stations, minimising human error whilst improving operational performance. The system includes automatic braking for red signal violations, works with existing signal infrastructure, and provides in-cab signalling for safe operation in poor visibility conditions. Additional Kavach capabilities include prevention of rear-end and head-on collisions, continuous speed monitoring, and quick emergency response activation. "Work has begun on the transition to Kavach. All suburban locals on Western Railway will be equipped with Kavach in addition to mainline locomotives by the end of next year. This step marks a significant improvement in onboard safety and collision prevention," a senior WR official confirmed. The system continuously monitors train movements, verifies against speed restrictions and signal indicators, automatically engaging brakes when necessary. Western Railway plans to implement Kavach across 2,358 route kilometres by 2025, with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad section scheduled for completion this fiscal year. "Kavach is poised to significantly improve railway signalling systems and ensure enhanced passenger safety. Deployment of Kavach will not only enhance security in the service but also aid efficiency," Western Railway chief public relations officer Vineet Abhishek told PTI. Officials indicated that additional routes would follow subsequently. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . ‘Leave your vehicle and walk to office': Bengaluru's Thursday traffic prompts viral advice
As Bengaluru's infamous traffic continues to test commuters' patience, a local resident's suggestion, shared while stuck in Thursday's gridlock, has gone viral on X. The image struck a nerve online, highlighting yet again how badly gridlocked certain pockets of Bengaluru have become.(X/@WF_Watcher) 'If you're anywhere near Kundalahalli, leave your vehicle at home and just walk to offic, you'll probably get there faster on foot. Plus, the weather's great for a walk. Watch out for gaps on the footpath—stay safe!' the post read, accompanied by a photo of a long snarl of vehicles near Kundalahalli. (Also Read: 'Yes Bengaluru' challenge calls for innovative solutions for city's urban issues: Report) Check out the post here: The image struck a nerve online, highlighting yet again how badly gridlocked certain pockets of Bengaluru have become, Kundalahalli in particular, a major IT hub that connects Whitefield, Marathahalli, and Brookefield, sees peak-hour congestion almost daily due to its narrow roads and ongoing infrastructure work. (Also Read: 36 days to go: Tejasvi Surya launches countdown to Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line, seeks accountability) While the suggestion to ditch the car was tongue-in-cheek, the reactions from fellow X users reflected frustration with the city's broken pedestrian infrastructure. 'Where is the footpath to walk?' asked one. 'No footpath available to walk. Wherever it is available, it has been encroached by street vendors,' another pointed out. Some users tried to guess the exact location of the photo, 'Is this pic taken after the railway bridge or on CMR college road near the Kundalahalli underpass?' Others shared their own traffic struggles from different parts of the city, like a user reporting a 20-minute delay near Goraguntepalya on the ring road. Meanwhile, frustration over Bengaluru's traffic isn't limited to road congestion alone. The long-delayed launch of Namma Metro's Yellow Line has become another sore point. To highlight the urgency, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has kicked off a public countdown campaign on X, reminding authorities to meet their latest promised deadline of August 15. On Monday, Surya posted a 'T-minus 36' tracker, urging citizens to join him in holding the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) accountable. The Yellow Line, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra, has missed multiple launch targets, despite civil work being mostly completed. With every delay, hopes of decongesting East and South Bengaluru continue to dim — leaving residents increasingly dependent on narrow roads, overcrowded buses, and disappearing footpaths.
