Man arrested in connection with Norfolk woman's shooting death in Newport News
Newport News Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a homicide that occurred in May.
Benjamin Forrest Carter, 29, of Newport News, was arrested on Saturday and charged with first-degree murder, as well as several weapons offenses, in the death of Karen Yvonne Watkins, according to police. He was earlier identified as a suspect in the case.
Karen Yvonne Watkins, 37, of Norfolk, was shot in the southeast section of Newport News, in the area of 27th Street and Wickham Avenue. Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area at about 11:21 p.m. Sunday.
That system is designed to pick up audio signals of shots fired and determine where they are coming from.
Officers found Watkins with at least one gunshot wound when they arrived. She died after being taken to a local hospital.
