Man arrested in connection with Norfolk woman's shooting death in Newport News
Newport News Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a homicide that occurred in May.
Benjamin Forrest Carter, 29, of Newport News, was arrested on Saturday and charged with first-degree murder, as well as several weapons offenses, in the death of Karen Yvonne Watkins, according to police. He was earlier identified as a suspect in the case.
Karen Yvonne Watkins, 37, of Norfolk, was shot in the southeast section of Newport News, in the area of 27th Street and Wickham Avenue. Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area at about 11:21 p.m. Sunday.
That system is designed to pick up audio signals of shots fired and determine where they are coming from.
Officers found Watkins with at least one gunshot wound when they arrived. She died after being taken to a local hospital.

6 CTA bus passengers hurt in crash with private ambulance in Chicago's South Loop
Six people were hurt Tuesday morning in a crash involving a Chicago Transit Authority bus and an ambulance in the South Loop. Police said at 10:13 a.m., the No. 3 King Drive bus was traveling south on Michigan Avenue just north of Roosevelt Road, when it was rear-ended by a private ambulance also headed south. Two men on the bus, ages 23 and 25, and one woman on the bus, 23, were all taken to Rush University Medical Center. Two other men on the bus, ages 73 and 32, were taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, and two others of unconfirmed age were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. The driver of the private ambulance was issued two traffic tickets, police said.

Harrisonville names first female police chief in police department's history
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For the first time in the city's history, Harrisonville has named the first woman to lead its police department. Darla Harris, a longtime law enforcement veteran and Cass County native, was officially sworn in as Chief of Police during Monday night's Board of Aldermen meeting. Harris has served with the Harrisonville Police Department in the rank of Lieutenant since August of 2022, and has been responsible for overseeing all department investigations. She started out in jail before completing the police academy, becoming a patrol officer at the Metro Patrol Division and eventually rising to the position of Detective. As a detective with the KCPD, Harris worked as a Task Force Officer for the FBI, undercover for the Street Narcotics and Drug Enforcement Units, the Gang Squad, Metro Property Crimes and Homeland Security Intelligence. The city said Harris has served the department faithfully during her time here and held the title of interim Chief of Police, following the retirement of former Police Chief John Hofer. 'I am extremely pleased that Chief Harris has agreed to serve as our City's Police Chief,' Mayor Zaring said. 'She has proven to be an excellent leader and will make an excellent Chief. Second man charged in robbery of couple at Glenview home
Nearly two months after a couple was robbed outside their home in the north Chicago suburb of Glenview, police said they had a second suspect in custody Tuesday. Greg Poulos and Angie Beltsos were heading home to Glenview after dinner in the city around 10 p.m. the night of Monday, April 21, and walking to their front porch, when a car pulled up. Police said three men ambushed them, pulled out guns, and demanded their belongings. In video of the robbery posted on Nextdoor, three men can be seen pointing guns at the couple as they walk up to their front porch. One of the robbers can be heard telling them "give me all that s***" before the man and woman toss their cell phones, keys, and her purse on the ground. "You got it. You got it. Here, take it. Take it. Take everything. Take everything. Take everything. Take everything. Take everything. Here, you can have it. Honest to God, guys," Poulos told the robbers. Beltsos said they handed over everything from her purse to their clothing. Video shows one man remove Poulos' jacket. The robbers fled in a Jaguar sport-utility vehicle On Monday, Chicago police and United States Marshals arrested a suspect — Amarion Ray Williams, 21, of south suburban Dolton.
