Benjamin Mendy signs for Swiss club FC Zurich
Swiss Super League side FC Zurich have completed the signing of former Premier League left-back Benjamin Mendy. The 30-year-old has signed a contract until 2026 and joins from French club Lorient, where he had spent the last one-and-a-half seasons. Mendy joined Lorient after being released by Manchester City, where he made 75 appearances between 2017 and 2022. Advertisement In January 2023, Mendy was cleared of six charges of rape and one of sexual assault. He was also cleared of two other charges, one of rape and one of attempted rape, in July of that year following a re-trial. He joined Lorient later that month, almost two years after playing his last professional appearance and played 15 times for the club. Lorient were relegated to Ligue 2 after the 2023-24 season. Mendy won an employment tribunal against City in November 2024, with the club being ordered to pay the player the majority of his unpaid wages that they had stopped paying after his suspension. Mendy had claimed City owed him £11million ($14.1m) when they stopped paying his salary after he was charged with multiple rape allegations and one of sexual assault in August 2021. Zurich are eighth in the league table, seven points off leaders Basel. The Swiss transfer window remains open until February 17. (Damien Meyer/AFP via Getty Images)
