LGL: Robert Benjamin Wiley Community Charter School

Even though most schools are on spring break this week, that didn't stop the JET24/FOX66 Loving Giving Local team from making a stop at a local charter school. The R.B. Wiley Community Charter School was the recipient of this week's Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express Resale Center. The school has two locations, with most students attending class in the former Hammermill Paper Company research and development building. The Wiley charter school has been a part of Erie's educational landscape 27 years, founded by the late R. Benjamin Wiley, long-time executive director of GECAC. 'We serve as a school choice here in the city of Erie. About 550 students grades K-8 come to our charter school every year. We look to produce the best students we can so they can be successful in their life,' said Joe Cintron, charter school director of operations and HR manager. Good things happen at the Wiley Community Charter school. Several teachers have been honored with the JET 24 PennWest University Golden Apple award. Since going to this school is a choice, what makes this place different? According to Cintron, 'We love the children that come in but we also support families as well. So, we try to do a humanitarian kind of effort and the way we treat our children and families, so when they come here, they're not just part of a school but part of our family.' While classrooms are empty this week due to spring break, when students in grades K-2 return, they're going to learn they'll benefit from this week's Loving Giving Local donation. 'We're looking to use it for incentives for our K-2nd students for literacy and math, Cintron said. 'So, we're going to give them some assessments, and if they do well, we're going to give them some incentives for that.' After presenting a check for $250, Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center said, 'well this is a community charter school so for us to be able to bring loving giving local here today and to learn the donation we bring is going to go to an incentive program for K-2 grade, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about and we're proud to be here today.'
