MFL increase foreign players limit to 15 next season
JDT's Bergson Da Silva of Brazil is one of the foreign players who will be in action next season. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Football League (MFL) have announced that teams can have a maximum of 15 foreign players for the upcoming season. In a statement relased on Friday (May 22), they limited the registration to 34 players for clubs competing in Asian Champions League (ACL) Elite and ACL and 30 players for all other clubs (reduced from 32). With 15 foreigners now, the match day squad limit will be seven starters and two on the bench in the league scheduled to kick off in August. The composition is four players from Africa, North and South America, Europe and Oceania continents; one from Asia; and two from Southeast Asia. This is an increase from last season's limits of 12 foreign players (ACL Elite and ACL2) and nine for other clubs. "However, clubs are not obligated to fulfil the foreign quota as it depends on their financial capacity, especially as the FFP (Financial Fair Play) salary cap is being enforced," said MFL. The full enforcement of FFP introduced last season was set at 80 percent salary cap based on each club's annual budget. Clubs are now prohibited from spending more than 80 percent of their total annual budget on wages, a move designed to control costs, maintain healthy cash flow, and prioritise consistent salary payments. The import rule changes aim to provide equal opportunities, raise competition levels, and attract higher-quality imports, especially as the Malaysian league's calendar now aligns with top global leagues. The MFL also confirmed that Brunei will participate in the new season, after having secured approval from the FIFA. They last featured in the Super League in 2008.

JDT Completes Triple Treble With Malaysia Cup Win Tonight
KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) -- Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) achieved a triple treble when they clinched the Malaysia Cup by beating Sri Pahang FC 2-1 at National Stadium, Bukit Jalil here tonight. The local powerhouse has won the country's three major footballing titles - the Super League, the FA Cup and the Malaysia Cup - in a single season thrice, completing an amazing feat known as the triple treble. Southern Tigers strikers Bergson Da Silva and Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi rose to the occasion tonight by scoring a goal apiece in the second half to overcome the early goal by Sri Pahang scored by T Saravanan early in the first half. bootstrap slideshow Defending champions JDT had started out strong, striking through an Oscar Arribas header from a corner kick that was cleared off the line by Sri Pahang defender Muhammad Syazwan Andik Mohd Ishak. The first half's sole goal came not from the defending champions but from Sri Pahang, when Saravanan slotted home the loose ball after JDT keeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi Mohamed failed to catch Aleksandar Cvetkovic 's header. A shocked JDT redoubled their efforts, culminating in a shot by Da Silva in the 26th minute that was cancelled following confirmation by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) that he was offside and later came close to scoring again in the 31st minute, but his effort was just shy of Sri Pahang's goal. Sri Pahang's luck began to wane after their first goal as Sergio Aguero was sent off after receiving his second yellow card in the 35th minute. JDT came back on the pitch exuding confidence in the second half, and Arif Aiman's shot from outside the penalty box in the 47th minute that was deflected by goalie Muhammad Zarif Irfan Hashimuddin certainly put Sri Pahang on notice. Not more than 10 minutes later, an incident inside the penalty area between Sri Pahang's Mohd Azril Nasrulhaq Badrul Hisham and JDT's Arribas let to a VAR review and referee Razlan Joffri Ali awarding a penalty to JDT, which Bergson calmly converted in the 54th minute.

Fans can expect Bergson to do the samba if JDT rise to the occasion
Get down on it: Bergson Da Silva (right) doing the Samba moves with the now retired Diogo Santo after their Super League match against KL in 2023. PETALING JAYA: Every time Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) striker Bergson Da Silva finds the net, he entertains the fans with his one-of-a-kind celebrations, which involves knee slides and Samba moves. And the showman promises more as the Southern Tigers eye their third consecutive Malaysia Cup victory when they take on Pahang at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow. The mercurial Brazilian striker is even more motivated after winning two awards during the Malaysian Football Awards night on Wednesday and is hoping to end the season in a fantastic style. Da Silva won the best import and Super League Golden Boot to cement his reputation as a fearsome striker in Malaysia. 'Winning the awards gives me more reason to be more excited and happy,' said the 34-year-old, who has scored six golds in the Malaysia Cup so far. 'I want to work harder to achieve another title. We push each other for this reason and hope to end the season with the Malaysia Cup. 'Every year in Malaysia, the hunger and responsibility to achieve success gets stronger. I am grateful to the boss (Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim) because he has helped me change as a person. 'Why do I thank him? He is always behind us. He wants us to be better, to be competitive and change our mentality to play for this club. It is a pleasure.' This year, Da Silva has helped JDT win the Charity Shield, FA Cup and Super League. Meanwhile, Pahang's experienced centreback Fadhli Shas, who once donned the JDT jersey and lifted the trophy with them, had mixed feelings. 'It was the sweetest moment with JDT in 2017 when we won against Kedah 2-0 in 2017. We brought back the Cup after Johor last claimed it in 1985 and 1991,' reminisced Fadhli. 'I'm excited to be back in the final but it's a bit different this time because I'm with Pahang and JDT are stronger than before,' said Fadhli, who was quick to affirm that his team would rise to the challenge. 'I have extraordinary teammates in Pahang. They are highly motivated, and I'm amazed with their spirit. We will put our best performance.'
