PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Football League (MFL) have announced that teams can have a maximum of 15 foreign players for the upcoming season.
In a statement relased on Friday (May 22), they limited the registration to 34 players for clubs competing in Asian Champions League (ACL) Elite and ACL and 30 players for all other clubs (reduced from 32).
With 15 foreigners now, the match day squad limit will be seven starters and two on the bench in the league scheduled to kick off in August.
The composition is four players from Africa, North and South America, Europe and Oceania continents; one from Asia; and two from Southeast Asia.
This is an increase from last season's limits of 12 foreign players (ACL Elite and ACL2) and nine for other clubs.
"However, clubs are not obligated to fulfil the foreign quota as it depends on their financial capacity, especially as the FFP (Financial Fair Play) salary cap is being enforced," said MFL.
The full enforcement of FFP introduced last season was set at 80 percent salary cap based on each club's annual budget.
Clubs are now prohibited from spending more than 80 percent of their total annual budget on wages, a move designed to control costs, maintain healthy cash flow, and prioritise consistent salary payments.
The import rule changes aim to provide equal opportunities, raise competition levels, and attract higher-quality imports, especially as the Malaysian league's calendar now aligns with top global leagues.
The MFL also confirmed that Brunei will participate in the new season, after having secured approval from the FIFA.
They last featured in the Super League in 2008.

Investors seek relief on Bursa Malaysia after six losing sessions

KUALA LUMPUR: There was a welcome bounce on Bursa Malaysia as trading commenced on Wednesday, giving investors some respite amid the persistent market weakness. At the opening bell, the FBM KLCI rose 3.85 points to 1,507.1, alleviating the risk of the index falling through the 1,500 psychological support. Having endured six straight sessions of losses, the market's benchmark index is ripe for bargain-hunting. However, the market undertone remains weak with net selling by foreign funds sapping momentum from the market. According to TA Securities Research, investors are wary of committing to the Malaysian stock market as it is beset by a weaker earnings outlook and uncertainties over global tariffs. The research firm noted weaker first-quarter earnings from local corporate and weaker China manufacturing numbers as the culprits behind the dampened investor sentiment, which took the market briefly below 1,500 points in the previous session. "Immediate index support stays at 1,490, while stronger supports can be found at 1,465 and 1,444. Immediate resistance is kept at 1,564 with next upside hurdles seen at the recent high of 1,586, followed by 1,610 ahead," it said in its technical outlook. Blue chips leading the rebound on Wednesday included Nestle up 30 sen to RM78.90, Kuala Lumpur Kepong adding 10 sen to RM19.74 and Hong Leong Financial Group gaining eight sen to RM16.38. Active stocks were KNM down 0.5 sen to three sen, Avangaad unchanged at 28 sen and Sunview flat at 38 sen.

Sivasangari checks into British Open quarter-finals

NATIONAL squash ace S. Sivasangari is through to the quarter-finals of the 2025 British Open after a thrilling five-game victory over Japan's Satomi Watanabe in Birmingham early today. The 26-year-old Malaysian displayed remarkable resilience to defeat the tournament's seventh seed 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 4-11, 11-4 in a match lasting just over an hour. World number 24 Sivasangari started strongly by clinching the first two games before Watanabe fought back to level the match by taking the third and fourth. However, the Kedah-born player regained her composure in the decider, dominating the final game to secure her place in the last eight. Sivasangari will next face fourth seed Amina Orfi of Egypt as she continues her pursuit of a semi-final in the prestigious tournament.

Sivasangari cruises into maiden British Open quarter-finals [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: S. Sivasangari marched into the quarter finals of the British Open for the first time following an impressive display against Japan's Satomi Watanabe in Birmingham on Tuesday. World No. 9 Sivasangari, appearing in her fifth British Open, defeated world No. 7 Satomi 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 11-4 in 45 minutes. The 26-year-old Malaysian had never lost to Watanabe in all six previous meetings on the PSA Tour as well as defeating the Japan No.1 in the semi-finals of the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. "It feels great reaching the quarter finals of the British Open," Sivasangari told PSA Squash Tour. "I think last year I got eight-time world champion Nour El Sherbini in the first round, and that was a pretty tough draw. "Satomi has been playing really well recently, and we've played each other since we were in juniors, we're the same age, and she's a good friend as well. ""Today, I'm really happy with my performance. I focused on my game and on making it further in Platinum events." Facing the Malaysian, who won the Cincinnati Open in February, in the quarter-final is No.4 seed Amina Orfi, after the Egyptian avenged a painful defeat to Nada Abbas at this year's World Championships with a convincing 11-4, 11-4, 11-8 win over her compatriot. Amina beat Sivasangari in the Malaysia Cup final and Singapore Open semi-finals last November.
