Black mold, asbestos removal from pump house closes Paradise Hills Pool
BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) — A public pool in Bernalillo County is closing for about a week as black mold and asbestos are removed from the facility's pump house, according to BernCo. Paradise Hills Pool will close on Wednesday, June 4, and is anticipated to re-open around Wednesday, June 11. Albuquerque man pleads no contest to charges for running down, killing man
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man accused of hitting and killing another man with a vehicle pleaded no contest to his charges in court Wednesday. Traffic: BernCo issues hundreds of citations on road with new speed camera Gabriel Guerrero was facing murder and tampering with evidence charges after hitting Nathaniel Besel in the parking lot of an apartment complex in May 2024. APD said Besel got into a confrontation with his neighbors when he thought he smelled fentanyl smoke. Two women denied smoking. Besel later said he was jumped by two woman and a man. Ring camera footage later showed Guerrero, who was the boyfriend of one of the women, hit Besel from behind with a silver Honda Accord. Besel died from his injuries. Midweek cool down and weekend storm
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – More cities and town across New Mexico will see more record and near-record breaking high temperatures this afternoon. However, a backdoor cold front will be returning us to milder highs tomorrow. New Mexico remains under a ridge of high pressure this afternoon. The center of the high pressure is currently to the south over Mexico. The ridging is bringing New Mexico another day of record and near record breaking temperatures, and sunny skies. Traffic: BernCo issues hundreds of citations on road with new speed camera Overnight, an upper level short wave trough will begin to move over New Mexico. Along with the trough, a backdoor cold front will move through eastern and central New Mexico. This cold front will bring temperatures across the state back down to mild levels. The cool down will last through Thursday. Along with a brief cool down, the upper level shortwave trough will be bringing light rain to parts of southern New Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday. A band of precipitation will stretch from the Gila to the Sacramento mountains. A weekend storm is on its way to New Mexico. However, there is a bit of uncertainty in the forecast. A low pressure system will make its way over Arizona late this week. The American model has the low pressure tracking north near the four-corners over the weekend. This track keeps precipitation minimal and only in the north. The European model has the low tracking south towards the Gila and the bootheel. The department says its hard for them to know how many total workers have been let go, since some have not filed for unemployment. Most claims so far have come from Albuquerque, followed by Carlsbad, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho and Las Cruces. Cabinet Secretary Sarita Nair says they have a team dedicated to federal unemployment claims and is prepared to ramp up efforts if more workers lose their jobs. [2] House Dem's unveil nearly $11 billion budget – With less than a month left of the legislative session, work to complete the state's budge is speeding up. The proposed $10.8 billion spending plan cleared the House floor and will head to a Senate committee. It includes money for law enforcement recruitment and retention, transitional housing and pay raises for teachers and school staff. [3] Spring-like weather in short team before storm system arrives – Near-record to record high temperatures will occur today with sunny skies for most of the day except for sporadic rain showers in the northern mountains. Patchy dust in the lowlands with the elevated to critical fire threat will be accompanied with the next cooldown with sporadic rain and wet snow activity mostly in the higher terrain tomorrow, but conditions will dry out quickly while warming again later this week before the next stronger storm system set to arrive later this weekend. [4] Kirtland Air Force Base using technology to train emergency services – Kirtland Air Force Base is giving a closer look into how its Fire Emergency Services team prepares for real world situations. The base says its first responders use a virtual reality simulator. Man accused of shooting at Albuquerque police to remain behind bars through trial
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Joeray Newson, accused of firing at police after a traffic stop, will remain behind bars while awaiting trial. Police say the car took off and Newson fired several rounds. The officer was not hit. Police say the suspects stopped at a bank and four people fled, but Newson was later arrested. Police say Newson is already on federal probation for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is now facing new charges, including aggravated assault on a peace officer.
