ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – After nearly seven years, Bernalillo County Fire Rescue is looking for its next chief, and Monday night, the public discussed what they're looking for in leadership. The nationwide search comes after acting Chief Greg Perez announced his departure earlier this year. City of Albuquerque updates rules for fiber internet construction projects Monday night, the county received feedback from residents and former firefighters about the qualities, priorities, and leadership skills they would like to see in the next chief. 'If you hire somebody from the outside, that's not within the department. You're potentially blocking those younger firefighters that have aspirations to be chief someday,' said a speaker. Input session for new Bernalillo County fire chief to be held Monday

May 16—Bernalillo County will host a community input session to gather feedback as it searches for a new fire chief. The session is meant to inform the county about what qualities the community wants to see in a new chief and what priorities the candidates should have, according to a news release. The input session will be held Monday, May 19, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Commission Chambers, 415 Silver SW, in Downtown Albuquerque. A national search began in February after Bernalillo County Fire Rescue Chief Greg Perez was appointed deputy county manager. Since then, he has held the temporary title of acting chief. "Chief Perez's dedication and commitment to fire and rescue will leave a lasting impact on the county and the community," County Manager Cindy Chavez said in announcing Perez's transition. "We will now look nationwide to ensure that we find the best candidate to build upon the strong foundation he leaves behind. In the meantime, we appreciate his continued leadership as acting chief until a successor is selected." According to the county, Bernalillo County Fire Rescue has 16 facilities, including stations in the North Valley and the East Mountains, along with training facilities and substations.

East Mountain residents invited to Wildfire Preparedness Town Hall

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – East Mountain residents in Bernalillo County are invited to an event to learn how to protect their homes if a wildfire occurs. Earthquake reported in Socorro County Bernalillo County Fire Rescue is hosting a Wildfire Preparedness Town Hall Thursday at the Los Vecinos Community Center starting at 5:30 p.m. Residents can learn more about evacuation planning and fire restrictions and will have a chance to ask fire experts questions. WHITE SANDS, N.M. (KRQE) — White Sands National Park released its visitor count for March 2025 on Monday. The park saw a total of 91,656 visitors that month, which is a 13% decrease from last March. Bernalillo County Fire Rescue holding wildfire preparedness townhalls The park has seen 175,611 visitors this year, which is a 5% decrease from this time in 2024. Alamogordo Earth Day is being held at Almeda Park on April 19. Sunset strolls are offered daily, weather permitting, with no reservation required. 'Program starts at signs along Dunes Drive about 7 miles from the visitor center betweenthe Backcountry Camping Loop parking lot and the Yucca Picnic Area,' the National Park Service said in a press release. 'No charge for the program. Park entrance fees apply.' Park hours are from 7 a.m. until 30 minutes after the sun sets. Visitor center hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 22.
