ASEAN Main Logistics Secretariat sets sights on raising the bar for October's summit

KUALA LUMPUR: The Main Logistics Secretariat for ASEAN 2025 is determined to raise the bar for the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit, scheduled for October this year, following the successful execution of the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, which concluded today. Head of the Secretariat Raja Saifful Ridzuwan Raja Kamaruddin said the team would use a comprehensive post-event evaluation of the recently concluded summit and related meetings, held from May 22 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here, as a blueprint to refine future preparations. 'Honestly, I am very satisfied because everything we planned over the past five months has fully materialised. 'But the real challenge lies ahead in October. We've already tested our capabilities and coordination with various agencies. Now, our focus is on identifying our weaknesses and improving them,' he said when featured on Bernama TV's special programme on ASEAN Summit 2025 tonight. One of the key hurdles, Raja Saifful noted, was presenting Malaysia's identity as a multiracial, peaceful, and tolerant nation, grounded in the MADANI principles - a national development philosophy championed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim - to the broader ASEAN community. 'We wanted to carry the Prime Minister's aspirations onto the ASEAN stage, including through the (ASEAN 2025) logo. That's why we featured blue, red, and yellow - the colours that not only represent ASEAN, but also Malaysia,' he explained. Raja Saifful also underscored ASEAN's central role in Malaysia's foreign policy, particularly in terms of contributing to regional economic growth and stability through a wide range of collaborative initiatives. The ASEAN Summit, which drew leaders and high-level delegations from ASEAN and partner countries, was held under Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'. This year marks Malaysia's fifth term as ASEAN Chair, following previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.

KL Declaration 2025 Set To Boost ASEAN's Geopolitical Role

GENERAL National Council of Professors Fellow Prof Dr Azmi Hassan (right) speaks during a special segment aired on Bernama TV yesterday ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit. By N. Kuvineshwaren KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur Declaration, expected to be launched at this 46th ASEAN Summit, is set to become one of the most significant documents in Malaysia's chairmanship history, particularly in terms of regional geopolitics and economic direction. National Professors Council Fellow Prof Dr Azmi Hassan said the upcoming declaration is expected to show clear differences from the 2015 Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the Establishment of the ASEAN Community, signed during Malaysia's previous chairmanship. He attributed this to Malaysia's different approach under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim amid current regional and global geopolitical and economic developments. 'As such, I believe the new Kuala Lumpur Declaration will carry greater geopolitical weight to position ASEAN as a respected and recognised organisation. 'Moreover, ASEAN has the potential to become a problem-solving body, rather than just responding to regional issues,' he told Bernama after appearing on a special programme aired on Bernama TV yesterday ahead of the ASEAN Summit. Azmi further said that the Prime Minister had placed a strong emphasis on ASEAN centrality, especially through deeper involvement in international issues such as the Ukraine conflict, the situation in Gaza, and the India-Pakistan crisis -- all of which impact regional economic stability. 'ASEAN can no longer be confined to regional issues like the Myanmar crisis or the South China Sea dispute,' he said.

Japan to Work With ASEAN on Myanmar Humanitarian Response

By Nurfardlina Izzati Moktar and Nor Farah Aqilah Mohd Sham KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 (Bernama) -- Japan has thrown its weight behind Malaysia's ASEAN chairmanship, hoping Kuala Lumpur will leverage the role to spearhead regional efforts to address the worsening crisis in Myanmar, including the delivery of humanitarian aid to the country, which has been further devastated by a powerful earthquake in March. Japan's Ambassador to Malaysia, Noriyuki Shikata, said Japan stands ready to work with ASEAN to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to Myanmar and is also keen to support and engage in the country's reconstruction. bootstrap slideshow "The situation in Myanmar has worsened because of the quake. We have been dispatching our humanitarian assistance and wish to engage in the reconstruction of the country. 'But at this point in time, it is very difficult to effectively conduct and carry out humanitarian assistance,' he said during an interview on Bernama TV's The Nation: Diplomatic Dispatch, on Wednesday. "I have very strong expectations for Malaysia as chair of ASEAN to address these urgent issues, and Japan looks forward to supporting Malaysia's role as a chair of the ASEAN process," he added. According to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre), the 7.7-magnitude earthquake near Mandalay on March 28 has killed more than 3,700 people. The quake caused widespread destruction to critical infrastructure and affected nearly 508,000 people, with more than 28,500 currently housed in 106 evacuation centres. The total estimated cost stands at US$1.7 billion with authorities continuing to verify this figure, the centre said.
