Over 400 kids in Toronto are on a wait-list for a big brother or big sister amid a shortage of mentors
After Bernard Macharia applied to be a Big Brother five years ago, he noticed that there were few other Black mentors in the program.
So when it came time to be paired with a Little, or mentee, with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Toronto, Macharia had one request: he wanted to mentor someone who looked like him. Part of this was to more easily connect with his Little, but Macharia also believes having a role model who looks like you can be powerful.
