Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, opened the forum with a compelling speech, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative action to protect ocean ecosystems. 'The UAE recognizes that it is in our common interests to act, but more importantly, we have a common duty to act,' she stated. Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Vice President of the Maldives, followed with a keynote speech addressing ocean sustainability and climate resilience. He called for stronger international cooperation, particularly for small island nations facing immediate threats from rising sea levels. The forum featured four key panel discussions. The first session, 'Innovating for Blue Tomorrow,' explored nature-based innovations and financing mechanisms for sustainable coastal development. 'Zero Waste Ocean' focused on reducing ocean waste and promoting integrated waste management solutions. 'Deep Learning for Deep Seas' examined AI-driven technologies in ocean research, including autonomous underwater vehicles and advanced sensors. The final session, 'Ocean Sustainability and Climate Change,' addressed the challenges of climate change on marine ecosystems and proposed solutions for sustainable ocean management. Among the notable attendees was HE Dr. Anxious Jongwe Masuka, Zimbabwe's Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, who was honored with the Best Minister Award at the summit. In recognition of his efforts in the field of agriculture, Zimbabwean minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement Anxious Jongwe Masuka was announced winner of this year's 'Best Minister Award' during Dubai's World Government Summit (WGS). Masuka's achievements include achieving wheat self-sufficiency in 2022 with a record harvest, reducing the country's reliance on imports for the first time in over two decades. Masuka received the award on Thursday in the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Speaking to Khaleej Times, Masuka said, 'We are climate-proofing agriculture, and we need to accelerate that, so that whether there is rain or not, we can produce enough to feed ourselves and also begin feeding a growing and needy global market,' he added. He commented on receiving the award by saying: "Well, this award is very humbling, but I receive it on behalf of farmers and the people of Zimbabwe and the colleagues back home." The Best Minister Award, which is organised by WGS in collaboration with PwC Middle East, recognises public officials who have led sustainable, high-impact initiatives that drive social and economic progress. In its eighth edition, Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the role ministers can play in moving toward a better future. Focus Countries are selected from those with the highest global rankings in four key social and economic indicators: the Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International, the Worldwide Governance Indicators, the Human Development Index, and the World Happiness Report. PwC partners nominate up to three ministers who meet the evaluation criteria based on their direct knowledge of the nominees and their work. Additionally, PwC's central team conducts extensive research using credible sources, including reports from international forums, multilateral organisations, reputable media outlets, and official government publications. Furthermore, PwC's Global Insights Team analyses social media trends using internationally recognised keywords related to government ministers.
