Associated Press Seeks New Court Order To Restore Access After Trump White House Excludes All Wire Services From Permanent Pool Slot
The Associated Press is asking a federal judge to enforce his order that the Trump White House had to end its ban on the wire service because it refused to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in style guidance. In a federal court filing this morning, the AP's attorneys request 'the Court's immediate assistance in enforcing' the judge's injunction order. Instead, the White House said that print pool reporters will be part of a general rotation of two slots designated for those journalists. Read the AP's request on Trump White House access. In its filing, the AP said that the new White House policy is a 'clear violation' of a federal judge's order barring Trump and his aides from engaging in viewpoint discrimination. 'This new policy declares, in clear violation of the Court's Injunction Order, that '[t]he President retains absolute discretion over access to the Oval Office, Air Force One, and other comparably sensitive spaces,'' the AP's attorneys, led by Charles Tobin, wrote. The AP noted that it was excluded again today from the pool, while its photographer continued to be passed over for four photo seats, which continued to be assigned 'exclusively to AFP, Getty, The New York Times, and Reuters.' U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden ruled on April 8 that the Trump team's ban on the AP was a violation of the First Amendment, as it was for the reason that the news organization wouldn't switch to the Gulf of America reference. The judge ordered that the White House 'immediately rescind the denial of the AP's access to the Oval Office, Air Force One, and other limited spaces based on the AP's viewpoint when such spaces are made open to other members of the White House press pool.' His order went into effect on Monday, but the AP was excluded from the pool covering Trump's meeting with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele. An AP print reporter was allowed into an East Room event on Tuesday that was open to all pre-credentialed media, but McFadden's order covers access to the smaller spaces, like the Oval Office, that are limited to the dozen or so journalists in the pool. Earlier on Tuesday, after the AP was excluded from the pool, Tobin wrote to the government's attorney, 'Under a non-discriminatory system, the AP should have been selected for either the wire or photo pool, or both, by today.' Facebook Adds ‘Friends Tab', Nodding To Its Roots: 'Social Media Should Be More Social'
Facebook is adding a 'Friends tab,' a feature enabling users to focus in on posts shared by their friends and family members. The new initiative enables Facebook to invoke its early mission from two decades ago, even as it continues pushing aggressively into AI, algorithmically recommended content and branded fare. Over the years, as the social network's reach extended to billions of people around the world, it saw strategic benefit in automation. When it began pumping recommended posts into user's feeds several years ago, the move initially prompted backlash before the effort was dialed back and somewhat refined. Debuting today in the U.S. and Canada, the new Friends tab provides an experience made up of content from users' Facebook friends. It is available initially through the navigation bar on the home feed and can be accessed in the 'bookmarks' section of the app. 'Formerly a place to view friend requests and People You May Know, the Friends tab will now show your friends' stories, reels, posts, birthdays and friend requests,' the company explained in a blog post. 'Social media should feel social.' The Friends Tab isn't an either/or proposition, and will coexist with more recent forms of content distribution. Within the Friends Tab, users will see only posts recommended or shared by people in their network. Outside of the tab, content will circulate as it has been. The goal is to at least offer a taste of what members of the senior management team have dubbed 'OG Facebook.' The tech giant rebranded as Meta Platforms in 2021, reflecting its aim to transcend the social media brand that started it all. 'Connecting with friends has been a part of Facebook since it launched,' the blog post said. 'Over the years, Facebook evolved to meet changing needs and created best-in-class experiences across Groups, Video, Marketplace and more, but the magic of friends has fallen away. We'll be adding several 'OG' Facebook experiences throughout the year.' Best of Deadline '1923' Season 2 Release Schedule: When Do New Episodes Come Out? The X Games Team With Google On AI Judging System For Ski And Snowboard Events
The X Games, after striking a streaming rights deal with Roku, is taking another leap into the digital future by partnering with Google on a new AI judging technology. Ski and snowboard competitions at the 'superpipe,' the competition's signature, 20-foot-tall freestyle course feature, will have a computers evaluating their moves instead of humans as part of a pilot program. While AI and digital technology more broadly have upended the sports world, the introduction of the new setup is unusual for sports based on judges, points to intriguing future scenarios for sports like figure skating, diving or gymnastics. Those judgments will be rendered by a new experimental AI technology developed in collaboration with Google Cloud. The X Games (x for 'extreme') were founded by ESPN programmers in the mid-1990s as a way to bring sports like snowboarding, freestyle skiing, skateboarding and motocross to wider audiences. MSP Capital acquired the X Games in 2022. The AI system will debut during this year's X Games Aspen. The announcement of the new system said it aims to 'explore the potential for enhancing objectivity in judged sports, increasing fan engagement, and providing athletes with additional insights into their performances.' X Games AI uses Google Cloud's tools, including Vertex AI and advanced large language models, to analyze video footage and capture data on metrics such as airtime, trick difficulty, and execution. The system is designed to provide deeper analysis of each run. The tech was developed with input from X Games judges, athletes, and analysts to ensure alignment with the competition's needs. 'When we acquired X Games, our goal was to reimagine unique fan experiences and increase access to the world's premiere athletes,' said Jeff Moorad, CEO of MSP Sports Capital. 'The X Games partnership with Google is a great example of how we intend to use technology to enhance that experience.' The Roku streaming rights deal was announced in December as part of a broader push into technology by MSP and the X Games. 'This is just the beginning,' said Jeremy Bloom, CEO of X Games. 'AI is still in its early development when applied to action sports, but I'm blown away by what our model can already do. Aspen will allow us to test its capabilities and explore how it might enhance transparency, fairness, and engagement for fans and athletes alike.'
