"Black Mirror" Season 7's Bête Noire Is Messing With Fans' Heads Like Never Before

This article contains spoilers for the Black Mirror episode "Bête Noire." Since it premiered on Channel 4 more than a decade ago, Black Mirror has become known as a TV show that really gets under viewers' skin. But with its new season, the dystopian drama is messing with viewers' heads in a way like never before. The second episode of the Netflix show's seventh season is titled "Bête Noire", and centres around a woman who feels she is being gaslit by a new colleague, who it later emerges is someone she bullied at school. Slowly, the central character's life begins to unravel as her new colleague continues to make her second-guess herself – by editing CCTV footage of them together, making tweaks to their email exchanges and even changing the name of a chicken shop she was once a patron of. But as more fans have been sharing their feelings about the show on social media, it's become apparent that Black Mirror is using this episode to have some fun at viewers' expense too. You see, there are two different versions of the episode that have been randomly distributed to Netflix users, with some seeing the name written on Maria's boyfriend's hat as 'Barnie's', and others 'Bernie's'. Two versions of the scene when Maria argues with her colleagues about the shop were also filmed. One outcome sees Maria pointing out the shop couldn't be called 'Barnie's' because that spelling wouldn't make sense, while in the other, she argues that it has to be called 'Barnie's' because chickens 'live in a barn' (although her co-worker quickly points out that's not strictly true, either). So my friend and I were watching the new Black Mirror episode 'Bête Noire' and we noticed that there was a stark difference between our episodes… even the viewers are getting gaslit at 16:40! #BlackMirrorS7 — Vastolorde | AKIO 🫡💖🇺🇸 (@actualakio) April 10, 2025 My gf and I are watching the black mirror episode Bete Noir on teleparty and we are watching two different versions of the same episode…in my episode Maria is adamant the chicken shop is Bernie's, in hers she's adamant it's Barnie's….the caps are switched in both too… — dirac (@quinnswm) April 13, 2025 black mirror filming two versions of the bernie's/barnie's scene and distributing them randomly is next level diabolical — Ł å ū r å (@sp00kybinch) April 13, 2025 Count your days @netflix it's Barnie's not Bernie's ! I saw what you did there. It's Barnie's because 'chickens live in a Barn' 'well actually they live in a coop.' — G is ☕️✨ (@GottiStylez) April 12, 2025 Wait until you find out they shot two different versions of the episode. Some people watched a reality where Barnies is the name of the restaurant on the hat originally and for others it was Bernies. They created a real life Mandela effect 💀💀💀 — Oxtail Pricing Specialist (@simsimmaaz) April 12, 2025 Apparently if you watch Bete Noire episode, there are 2 versions of Barnie's/Bernie's. If you watch on Netflix, Maria believes it's Bernie's when everyone else says it's Barnie's. If you watch the torrent version, the whole thing is the other way round. Holy hell. — J. (@thefluffybutt) April 11, 2025 so the hat in the beginning of the episode had barnie's on it then the google search later in the episode was bernie's but apparently some people have it the other way around?????? am i being gaslit??? netflix u sneaky bitch — kayla ✨ (@heykluh) April 13, 2025 Black Mirror has become known for its use of in-universe Easter eggs, of which there are plenty in Bête Noire. The food company Ditta – where Maria and Verity work – is first mentioned in the preceding season seven episode Common People during one of Rashida Jones character's 'ads'. It's also been pointed out that 'Barnie's' itself is a Black Mirror reference, calling back to the infamous season three episode "Shut Up And Dance". The answer to the Black Mirror Bête Noire question is 'BARNIES' as seen in season 3 'shut up and dance' #BlackMirror — Andrew McBride (@andrewmcb) April 13, 2025 Just scrolling up on tiktok for some Black Mirror related videos, and came across a video about 'Shut Up and Dance' episode, and someone in the comment section pointed out that Kenny is literally wearing a Barnies hat, a reference on the latest episode of black mirror🙉 whut?? — Gello (⊃。•́‿•̀。)⊃ (@MYARTSOULAB) April 14, 2025 Barnies tbm é a empresa onde o Kenny de Shut Up And Dance (3x03) trabalha — Muito Black Mirror (@mtblackmirror) April 14, 2025

Battle Of The Top Rookies Take 2

For the second and last time this season, the Montreal Canadiens will take on the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night at the Bell Centre. The two sides met earlier this month, and the Habs came out on top in a 4-3. Once again, it will be a battle between the two top rookies in the league, as Lane Hutson currently leads the race to the highest-scoring rookie with 43 points, with Macklin Celebrini trailing by one point. Time Is Running Out For EvansTaming Their Bete Noire: 3 Takeaways From the Canadiens' Win Over the HurricanesCanadiens: A Big Audition In the last duel, the Sharks rookie notched a point and an assist while the Canadiens blueliner could only muster a power play helper. The Californian outfit has won six of the last 10 duels between the two teams, but it has a 1-7-2 record in its previous 10 contests and hasn't won a single game in February. Its last triumph was on Jan. 27, when it signed a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Canadiens didn't practice today, so there's no indication yet as to Josh Anderson's availability after he collided at full speed with the boards in Tuesday's game, but no one has been called up from the Laval Rocket yet. Samuel Montembeault has been in net for the Canadiens' last two games, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Jakub Dobes step between the pipes on Thursday night. Montembeault was on duty when the two teams met earlier this month and has a 2-1-0 record against them with a 2.74 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. As for Dobes, he has never taken on the Sharks but has a 5-2-1 record this season with a 2.71 GAA and a .908 SP. Vitek Vanecek was in the net for the Sharks on their last game on Monday night, but there's no word yet on who will handle the net for San Jose on Thursday night. He's 3-1-0 against the Habs with a 2.76 GAA and a .894 SP. As for Alexandar Georgiev, he's 4-6-0 when facing Montreal with a 3.33 GAA and a .893 SP. #Habs Lane Hutson uses Juraj Slafkovsky as screen for PP goal vs #Hurricanes Assists: Laine#GoHabsGo #NHL #Hockey @RocketSports — Chris G (@ChrisHabs360) February 26, 2025 Former Hab Tyler Toffoli is the Sharks' most prolific scorer against la Sainte-Flanelle with 20 points in 21 games, followed by Alex Wennberg, who has 14 points in 22 tilts, and Colin White, who has 12 in 26 dates. On the Canadiens' side, Christian Dvorak leads the Canadiens in the points department when taking on the Sharks with 14 points in 25 games, Patrik Laine is in second place with 10 in 13 contests, and Anderson wraps up the top three with eight in 12 games. With just four games left in the Canadiens' calendar until the trade deadline, there's a chance some players could be taking their last strides wearing the bleu, blanc, rouge… Canadiens stories, analysis, breaking news, and more! Time is Running Out For Evans

Before the 4 Nations Face-Off, Montreal Canadiens' forward Jake Evans used the past tense when asked what it means to be a Hab for him, and it sounded like he might have played his last game wearing the Sainte-Flanelle. While he's still in Montreal, sources report to that he will be moved if a contract extension isn't signed before the weekend. Given the fact there's just over a week left before the trade deadline, it makes sense for Kent Hughes to decide one way or another. Rush trades never bring as good a return, and according to the above-mentioned article by Marco D'Amico, there is plenty of interest in the 28-year-old pivot. Taming Their Bete Noire: 3 Takeaways From the Canadiens' Win Over the HurricanesCanadiens: A Big AuditionKirby Dach Injured The sticking point in the contract talks appears to be the cap hit; because of the upcoming significant salary cap increase, the Evans camp is reportedly looking for a cap hit of over $3.5 M annually. His asking price could also complicate Hughes' job as he tries to trade him. A suitor who knows it doesn't want to sign him up for an extension won't be willing to give that much for a rental player. Hughes clearly stated he has plenty of draft assets and doesn't want to overload his roster with rookies next season; he believes this would slow down the team's progress. He won't be looking for fourth-round draft picks, and he's not going to give Evans away. Some have suggested that putting him in a package deal with Joel Armia may maximize his return. A contender might find acquiring a ready-made penalty killers duo attractive, and it could help Hughes lend a roster player ready to step in. On Wednesday morning, BPM Sports' Tony Marinaro reported that Evans is after a five year contract with a $4 million cap hit. That's quite a sizeable commitment to make to a 28-year-old bottom six player. Armia is getting $3.4 M right now on the fourth line and the general consensus is, it's too much to spend on a fourth liner. The question is, will the rising salary cap move the needle that much? I doubt it, no right away in any case and Hughes has to keep in mind how much he'll need to shell out when players like Ivan Demidov for instance are done with their ELC. Selon ce que plusieurs sources proches du dossier ont indiqué à @TonyMarinaro , le clan Jake Evans demanderait un contrat de 5 ans et 20 millions $🤯 — BPM Sports (@BPMSportsRadio) February 26, 2025 While the Canadiens' center line is far from set, if it's impossible to sign Evans to an extension, Hughes will have to move him one way or another. Losing him for nothing when free agency opens would be a massive failure for the Habs' brass. As things stand, next season, Nick Suzuki is the only center who is sure to return in his spot. Kirby Dach has yet to show he can be a consistent center in the NHL, and just like Evans, Christian Dvorak is set to become a free agent. Owen Beck has shown promising play, but giving the youngster too much too soon wouldn't be the best idea. Martin St-Louis has always played the long game when it comes to the development of his players, and even though the team wants to move forward, rookies will still need to have the time to learn how to be NHLers.
