"Black Mirror" Season 7's Bête Noire Is Messing With Fans' Heads Like Never Before

Buzz Feed17-04-2025

This article contains spoilers for the Black Mirror episode "Bête Noire."
Since it premiered on Channel 4 more than a decade ago, Black Mirror has become known as a TV show that really gets under viewers' skin.
But with its new season, the dystopian drama is messing with viewers' heads in a way like never before.
The second episode of the Netflix show's seventh season is titled "Bête Noire", and centres around a woman who feels she is being gaslit by a new colleague, who it later emerges is someone she bullied at school.
Slowly, the central character's life begins to unravel as her new colleague continues to make her second-guess herself – by editing CCTV footage of them together, making tweaks to their email exchanges and even changing the name of a chicken shop she was once a patron of.
But as more fans have been sharing their feelings about the show on social media, it's become apparent that Black Mirror is using this episode to have some fun at viewers' expense too.
You see, there are two different versions of the episode that have been randomly distributed to Netflix users, with some seeing the name written on Maria's boyfriend's hat as 'Barnie's', and others 'Bernie's'.
Two versions of the scene when Maria argues with her colleagues about the shop were also filmed.
One outcome sees Maria pointing out the shop couldn't be called 'Barnie's' because that spelling wouldn't make sense, while in the other, she argues that it has to be called 'Barnie's' because chickens 'live in a barn' (although her co-worker quickly points out that's not strictly true, either).
So my friend and I were watching the new Black Mirror episode 'Bête Noire' and we noticed that there was a stark difference between our episodes… even the viewers are getting gaslit at 16:40! #BlackMirrorS7 pic.twitter.com/G2Ne1SuvJV

My gf and I are watching the black mirror episode Bete Noir on teleparty and we are watching two different versions of the same episode…in my episode Maria is adamant the chicken shop is Bernie's, in hers she's adamant it's Barnie's….the caps are switched in both too… pic.twitter.com/7sTA0wxdYN

black mirror filming two versions of the bernie's/barnie's scene and distributing them randomly is next level diabolical

Count your days @netflix it's Barnie's not Bernie's ! I saw what you did there.
It's Barnie's because 'chickens live in a Barn' 'well actually they live in a coop.' pic.twitter.com/q1c1rBbyeX

Wait until you find out they shot two different versions of the episode. Some people watched a reality where Barnies is the name of the restaurant on the hat originally and for others it was Bernies. They created a real life Mandela effect 💀💀💀 https://t.co/UMYCD6S5ox

Apparently if you watch Bete Noire episode, there are 2 versions of Barnie's/Bernie's. If you watch on Netflix, Maria believes it's Bernie's when everyone else says it's Barnie's. If you watch the torrent version, the whole thing is the other way round. Holy hell.

so the hat in the beginning of the episode had barnie's on it then the google search later in the episode was bernie's but apparently some people have it the other way around?????? am i being gaslit??? netflix u sneaky bitch

Black Mirror has become known for its use of in-universe Easter eggs, of which there are plenty in Bête Noire.
The food company Ditta – where Maria and Verity work – is first mentioned in the preceding season seven episode Common People during one of Rashida Jones character's 'ads'.
It's also been pointed out that 'Barnie's' itself is a Black Mirror reference, calling back to the infamous season three episode "Shut Up And Dance".
The answer to the Black Mirror Bête Noire question is 'BARNIES' as seen in season 3 'shut up and dance' #BlackMirror pic.twitter.com/TDHXkPrIsz

Jamie Foxx Says Black People Are Being Challenged: 'It Wasn't About The Price Of Eggs'

Jamie Foxx seemingly alluded to the Trump administration during his acceptance speech at the 2025 BET Awards. While being honored as an Ultimate Icon at the ceremony, the Oscar winner appeared to deliver a cryptic message in his acceptance speech. 'To have this moment and not say that we're being challenged [as Black people] … we're being challenged,' he told the crowd at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday evening. Claiming that 'it wasn't about the price of eggs,' Foxx continued, 'We're being challenged, that's all… I don't want to say anything [else].' He added: 'I don't want to get into it.' Earlier this year, President Donald Trump was criticized for falsely claiming that egg prices are decreasing. In his 2024 campaign, Trump promised voters that he would lower the price of groceries on Day 1 of his presidency. In a Gallup poll, voters said that the economy was the most important issue that could influence their votes. Earlier in his speech, Foxx appeared emotional while expressing gratitude for surviving his medical emergency in April 2023. Foxx later revealed during his Netflix comedy special, 'What Had Happened Was,' that he underwent surgery after suffering a brain bleed that led to a stroke. 'When I saw the In Memoriam, I was like, 'Man that could've been me,'' he said of the posthumous tribute segment that aired before his speech. 'But I don't know why I went through what I went through. But I know my second chance I'm not going to turn down.' Meanwhile on X, formerly Twitter, social media users reacted over Foxx's tribute, which also featured musical performances by Babyface, Ludacris, Jennifer Hudson, T-Pain, Tank and Doug E. Fresh. Seeing Jamie Foxx get so emotional during this tribute is giving me chills. Jamie Foxx cries in BET Awards speech about health, credits daughters for recovery

Jamie Foxx cries in BET Awards speech about health, credits daughters for recovery Show Caption Hide Caption Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz talk returning to 'Back in Action' set Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz tell USA TODAY what it was like to return to shooting 'Back in Action' after pausing for Foxx's health scare. Two years out from his stroke and subsequent coma, Jamie Foxx emotionally thanked his sister and daughters for getting him through the dark period. Daughters Corinne Foxx, 31, and Anelise Bishop, 16, — like their dad — were in tears as they were seated in the 2025 BET Awards crowd. Anelise's chin trembled as she looked up at her dad on stage, who accepted one of the night's Ultimate Icon Awards. "When I saw that in memoriam, I was like, 'Man, that could've been me.' But I don't know why I went through what I went through, but I know that my second chance, I'm not going to turn it down," said Foxx, 57. He went on to thank sister Deidre Dixon, a Hollywood hair and makeup artist, because she "made sure that she took care of her brother" in spring 2023. Then he shouted out his eldest daughter, who was the one sharing updates on his health at the time. "My beautiful daughter, Corinne, I cannot say enough about you," Foxx said. "You've always taken a backseat to everything. But when you needed to drive it, you drove. And you made sure I was here. And at a certain point, I'm going to stop crying, but I'm not going to stop yet." Jamie Foxx speaks out: Actor reveals his mysterious illness in Netflix special Jamie Foxx daughters sob during speech as he reveals how Anelise helped recovery with guitar Foxx's lengthy speech also included a story about how his younger daughter helped with his recovery in the hospital. "Anelise Estelle Foxx, my baby with the big hair. She hides under that hair because she's got something special. You're so beautiful, man," Foxx said. "When I was fighting for my life in there, I've got to say this. They said, 'We're going to lose him because his vitals are bad.' And I didn't want my 14 year old to see me like that. But Anelise overheard the conversation and she snuck into my hospital room with her guitar and said, 'I know what my Daddy needs,'" he continued. Foxx recounted, "And as she played the guitar, my vitals (improved). And I realized God was in her guitar. The nurses ran in and said, 'What did they give him?' My daughter said, 'Shh, I've got him.'" Jamie Foxx's health struggles Foxx explained in his 2024 Netflix special that he'd experienced "a bad headache" on April 11, 2023. Moments after he'd asked for an aspirin, he lost consciousness — and now doesn't remember the ensuing 20 days. During this comatose period, Foxx was taken to a doctor, who administered a cortisone shot and sent him home. Then a follow-up appointment with a doctor revealed Foxx had experienced a stroke caused by a brain bleed. The exact cause of the stroke was not determined. Jamie Foxx on medical emergency: 'I was gone for 20 days' Speaking to a group outside of a hotel in Phoenix, actor Jamie Foxx revealed more details about a medical emergency he experienced last year. Jamie Foxx, Stevie Wonder joke about blindness With Foxx's speech lasting around 10 minutes, music legend and award presenter Stevie Wonder wandered back to Foxx, who was standing center stage, to gently encourage him to start wrapping it up. After Foxx noted he'd almost elbowed Wonder behind him, he started walking around the microphone with the trophy outstretched (which was not how Wonder was moving on stage). "How did he know?" Foxx said. Wonder joked earlier in the night that he watched and edited the tribute package for Foxx and had ribbed Foxx for trying to connect with him as a blind artist when he portrayed Ray Charles in the Oscar-winning movie "Ray." Jamie Foxx opens up about daughter Corinne's ‘special' role in his recovery after life-threatening health scare

'I said one day I was gonna stop crying,' Jamie Foxx says, reflecting on his daughter Corinne's support during his 2023 health scare. Jamie Foxx has made a career out of making people laugh—but on May 29, standing next to his daughter Corinne Foxx, he let his tears do the talking. During Netflix's FYSEE LA event, the 57-year-old entertainer showed a side of himself that fans rarely get to see: a father overwhelmed with gratitude and emotion after surviving a terrifying health crisis. Speaking with Corinne, 31, in a Q&A session, Foxx gave attendees an unfiltered glimpse into how close he came to death, and how the love of his daughter helped him find his way back. 'I said one day I was gonna stop crying,' he said to his daughter, per People magazine. 'But I got a feeling I'll never stop crying, because you were special.' In April 2023, Foxx suffered a brain bleed that led to a life-threatening stroke while filming 'Back in Action.' He spent 20 days unconscious, waking up in a hospital wheelchair with no memory of what had happened. What he did remember, though, was who had stayed by his side. Foxx dives deeper into his medical journey in his new Netflix comedy special, 'Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was.' 'Your life doesn't flash before your face. It was kind of oddly peaceful,' Foxx shares in the special. 'I saw the tunnel. I didn't see the light. I was in that tunnel, though. It was hot in that tunnel. S***, am I going to the wrong place in this motherf****? Because I looked at the end of the tunnel, and I thought I saw the devil, like, 'Come on.' ' And while Foxx was cracking jokes on stage, he also made sure to give love to the team of health care professionals at Atlanta's Piedmont Hospital. He remembers one nurse calling him 'a miracle,' telling him that 'less than 3% of people that come in with what you had leave here. We usually put 'em in a box. But when I saw that it was you, I rolled my sleeves up – That's Jamie Fox in there.'' In the midst of recovery, humor helped. But family healed, especially Corinne, who he says 'held him down.' Now, with his health restored, Foxx says he's more focused on the future than the past. 'I'm just glad God gave me the opportunity to get back,' he told his daughter. 'So I could see what you're going to do because you're going to shock the world.'
